Dimethylsulfide (DMS) is a volatile sulfur compound produced by the marine biota. The flux of DMS to the atmosphere may act on climate via aerosol formation. It is therefore important to improve our understanding of the processes that regulate sea surface DMS concentrations for eventual inclusion into climate models. In order to simulate the dynamics of DMS concentrations in the mixed layer, a model of DMS production was developed and calibrated against a 1 year time-series of DMS and DMSP (dissolved and particulate) data collected in the Sargasso Sea at Hydrostation ‘S’. The model reproduces the observed divergence between the seasonal cycles of particulate DMSP, the DMS precursor produced by algae, and DMS produced through the microbial loop from the cleavage of dissolved DMSP. DMSPp (particulate) reaches its maximum in the spring whereas DMSPd (dissolved) and DMS reach maximum concentrations in summer. Several parameters had to vary seasonally and with depth in order to reproduce the data, pointing out the importance of physiological and structural changes in the plankton food web. These parameters include the intracellular S(DMSp):N ratio, the C:Chl ratio and the sinking rates of phytoplankton and detritus. For the Sargasso Sea, variations in the solar zenithal angle, which co-vary with the seasonal variations in the depth of the mixed layer, proved to be a convenient signal to drive the seasonal variation in the structure and dynamics of the plankton. Variations of the temperature and photosynthetically active radiation also help to reproduce the short-term variability of the annual S cycle. Results from a sensitivity analysis show that variations in DMSPp are dependent mostly on parameters controlling phytoplankton biomass, whereas DMS is dependent mostly on variables controlling phytoplankton productivity.  相似文献

Deep-sea sediment samples were collected in the Western Crozet Basin (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean) through Permanently Open Ocean Zone (POOZ), Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) and Sub-Antarctic Zone (SAZ). Lipid class and fatty acid compositions were investigated to determine the sources and fate of organic matter in the first centimeter of sediment and, above this layer, in the fluff (when present) and particles in the overlying water. The total lipid content varied from 74 to 1033 μg l−1 in the overlying particles and fluffs, and from 24 to 97 μg g−1 dry mass (DM) in surficial sediments. Lipid composition was always dominated by phospholipids in the first centimeter of sediment and often in the overlying particles. The amount of phospholipids (labile compounds representative of fresh material) was compared to the amount of chlorophyll a (Chl a), another compound that is susceptible to rapid degradation. A strong N–S gradient was observed in the distribution of these two compounds, which was attributed to the contrasting hydrodynamic of the study area. The high sedimentation rate in POOZ resulted in better preservation of Chl a in this zone than in other zones of the Crozet Basin (PFZ and SAZ). Phospholipid fatty acids suggested the presence of viable as well as morphologically intact organisms, and these organisms consisted essentially of bacteria with some diatom cysts in the fluff of POOZ. These spores were able to grow in the culture, indicating that they were still viable. Despite the strong hydrodynamic variability, phospholipid fatty acids analysed from the deep-sea surficial sediments were never representative of plankton. This pointed to the extremely labile nature of the phospholipids originally present in planktonic material compared with Chl a, which was always found in overlying particles and surficial sediments.  相似文献

Microbolometers are at present the most sensitive detectors for mm and sub-mm Astronomy. They are in use in most of the present instruments in that bandwidth. We have developed filled arrays of NbSi-based planar antenna coupled microbolometers. The fabrication details are given, together with characterization of the NbSi thermometers and optical results. The optical performances are potentially good for ground-based mm-wave astronomy applications, while the overall detectors performances are limited by low-frequency excess noise in the thermometric NbSi high-impedance sensors (Anderson insulator).  相似文献

Our idea is to imitate Smale’s list of problems, in a restricted domain of mathematical aspects of Celestial Mechanics. All the problems are on the n-body problem, some with different homogeneity of the potential, addressing many aspects such as central configurations, stability of relative equilibrium, singularities, integral manifolds, etc. Following Steve Smale in his list, the criteria for our selection are: (1) Simple statement. Also preferably mathematically precise, and best even with a yes or no answer. (2) Personal acquaintance with the problem, having found it not easy. (3) A belief that the question, its solution, partial results or even attempts at its solution are likely to have great importance for the development of the mathematical aspects of Celestial Mechanics.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulations of single turbulent thermal plumes in the Boussinesq approximation are used to understand more deeply the interaction of a plume with itself and its environment. In order to do so, we varied the Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers from Ra?~?105 to Ra?~?108 and from Pr?~?0.025 to Pr?~?70. We found that thermal dissipation takes place mostly on the border of the plume. Moreover, the rate of energy dissipation per unit mass ε T has a critical point around Pr?~?0.7. The reason is that at Pr greater than ~0.7, buoyancy dominates inertia and thermal advection dominates wave formation whereas this trend is reversed at Pr less than ~0.7. We also found that for large enough Prandtl number (Pr?~?70), the velocity field is mostly poloidal although this result was known for Rayleigh–Bénard convection (see Schmalzl et al. [On the validity of two-dimensional numerical approaches to time-dependent thermal convection. Europhys. Lett. 2004, 67, 390--396]). On the other hand, at small Prandtl numbers, the plume has a large helicity at large scale and a non-negligible toroidal part. Finally, as observed recently in details in weakly compressible turbulent thermal plume at Pr?=?0.7 (see Plourde et al. [Direct numerical simulations of a rapidly expanding thermal plume: structure and entrainment interaction. J. Fluid Mech. 2008, 604, 99--123]), we also noticed a two-time cycle in which there is entrainment of some of the external fluid to the plume, this process being most pronounced at the base of the plume. We explain this as a consequence of calculated Richardson number being unity at Pr?=?0.7 when buoyancy balance inertia.  相似文献

The sequence of Combe‐Saunière (southwest France) has been studied with a large suite of methods, including micromorphology, geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, and organic matter (OM) analysis in order to document the post‐depositional processes that occurred during the last climatic cycle at the cave entrance. This study shows that intense weathering together with the accumulation of OM and phosphates by cave animals and others vectors (including humans) occurred during the phases of low clastic sedimentation. During the latter part of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, the Aurignacian and Gravettian humus‐bearing levels, which may be classified as cryoturbated leptosols, show incomplete decalcification and are dominated by poorly evolved forms of phosphates (bone fragments, coprolites). Phosphatized cambic B‐horizons formed at the beginning of MIS 3 and the Early Glacial and may reflect longer periods of pedological modification. The molecules identified by the analysis of the OM extracted from the Châtelperronian level derive mostly from the degradation of vegetal matter, most notably from conifers and mosses, in addition to bacteria and fungi. The Last Interglacial s.l. (MIS 5) is typified by the development of a phosphatized illuviated B‐horizon. Intense weathering together with phosphate leaching and precipitation took place in this soil, forming thick apatite–CaOH crusts. Although the poor chronological resolution prevents us from drawing clear conclusions as to the respective roles of the factors involved, phosphate accumulation and weathering seem to be controlled primarily by the duration of the soil‐forming periods. This study strongly suggests that a climatic signal has been recorded in the deposits.  相似文献

Résumé

Le massif karstique de Beni-Mellal, dans le Haut Atlas (Maroc), est constitué essentiellement par des calcaires dolomitiques du Lias qui présentent en surface des figures de dissolution spectaculaires. Le massif est situé entre 500 m et 2 400 m d’altitude et alimente plusieurs sources dont la plus importante est celle d’Aïn Asserdoune. La quasi-totalité des sources émergent au niveau des contacts chevauchants qui limitent le Jurassique calcaire des formations tertiaires sousjacentes du piémont. L’étude des débits classés et du tarissement ainsi que l’analyse corrélatoire et spectrale des chroniques pluies – débits du système karstique drainé par la source d’Aïn Asserdoune permettent de caractériser cet aquifère. Il s’agit d’un aquifère inertiel qui assure le flot de base. Cet aquifère est caractérisé par l’existence de réserves dynamiques importantes. Il est influencé par un karst superficiel fonctionnant en période de hautes eaux ainsi que par des apports latéraux provenant des compartiments voisins du massif de Beni-Bellal.  相似文献

Abstract

The study of the exotic blocks of the Hawasina Nappes (Sultanate of Oman) leads to give apposit data that allow us to propose a new paleogeographic evolution of the Oman margin in time and space. A revised classification of exotic blocks into different paleogeographical units is presented. Two newly introduced stratigraphic groups, the Ramaq Group (Ordovician to Triassic) and the Al Buda’ah Group (upper Permian to Jurassic) are interpreted as tilted blocks related to the Oman continental margin. The Kawr Group (middle Triassic to Cretaceous) is redefined and interpreted as an atoll-type seamount. The paleogeography and paleoenvironments of these units are integrated into a new scheme of the Neotethyan rifting history. Brecciae and olistoliths of the Hawasina series are interpreted to have originated from tectonic movements affecting the Oman margin and the Neotethyan ocean floor. The breccias of late Permian age were generated by the extension processes affecting the margin, and by the creation of the Neotethyan oceanic floor. The breccias of mid-late Triassic age coincide in time with the collision of the Cimmerian continents with Eurasia. In constrast, the breccias of late Jurassic and Cretaceous age are interpreted as resulting to the creation of a new oceanic crust (Semail) off the Oman margin.  相似文献

Abstract

The statistics and mechanical studies of the spatial variability of rainfall do not seem to be entirely satisfactory for brief events, such as the showers generating gullying. Thus, indirect indications of vegetation may be useful. Botanical continuums do reflect some climatic changes that may be linked to the distribution of these events. As an example, the analyses of some floristic transects, located at the transition of Mediterranean and oceanic, and Mediterranean and arid climates are presented. Conducted in parallel with the dynamic interpretation of climatic fields, these analyses have, for instance, allowed to state more precisely the spatial extension of several features of rains such as their cumulated values and their regime. The floristic ‘signal’ mainly concerns the climatic variations of the cumulated value of rainfall, but, in a subtler way, vegetation may signal the variations of regime. These features are linked with the strength of showers, and, as a consequence with the erosive capacity of rainfall. Dynamic phytoclimatology is then liable to give an aid to the spatialization of external geodynamic studies. © 2000 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS  相似文献
