The uppermost Quaternary sediments in Cartwright Saddle, Labrador Shelf, are acoustically laminated, with reflectors that can be traced over long distances. Two piston cores from the saddle record changes in sediment and meltwater delivery from the northeast margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) during deglaciation. Variations in sediment properties indicate a similar history of sediment accumulation over the last 12 kyr. The temporal sampling interval reaches decadal resolution in the last deglacial period 7–9 ka. Analyses of total carbonate content, sediment magnetic variables, foraminiferal species and stable isotope measurements on planktic foraminifers show that abrupt changes occurred ca. 10.9, 9.2, 8.8, 7.9 and 7 ka (with 450 yr correction). There was no distinct change in sediment character during much of the Younger Dryas chronozone. In the δ18O record, the 8.8 ka event is a dramatic 1‰ shift toward lower values, which we associate with the Noble Inlet glacial event within Hudson Strait. We do not see the pronounced low δ18O event at 7.1 ka reported off Nova Scotia, but surprisingly, neither the Nova Scotia records nor other records in the Labrador Sea capture the impressive 8.8 ka change. Serious consideration must be given to the final collapse of the LIS as the cause of the 8.2 cal. ka cold event recorded in Greenland and northwest Europe. A one-dimensional non-linear diffusion wave equation is derived from the Saint Venant equations with neglect of the inertia terms. This non-linear equation has no general analytical solution. Numerical schemes are therefore employed to discretize the space and time axes and convert the differential equation to difference form. In this study, the mixing cell method is used to convert the diffusion wave equation to difference form, in which the difference term can be eliminated by selecting an optimal space step size Δx when time step size Δt is given. When the time step size Δt→0, the space step size Δx=Q/(2S0BC]k) where Q is discharge, S0 is bed slope, B is channel width and Ck is kinematic wave celerity, which is the same as the characteristic length proposed by Kalinin and Milyukov. The results of application to two cases show that the mixing cell and linear channel flow routing methods produce hydrographs that are in agreement with the observed flood hydrographs. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

An approximate procedure for seismic analysis of concrete arch dams which is based on the smeared crack method is described. Features include construction sequence modelling, water and foundation interaction, crack formation, opening and closing of joints and cracks, frictional sliding, presence of shear keys, action of internal water pressure, and a reliable solution algorithm. Complete solutions can be obtained in an hour on a fast workstation computer, allowing parameter studies to be run. Pre-Late Devensian organic deposits in the Buchan area of northeast Scotland were investigated for their geomorphological and palaeoecological (pollen, plant macrofossils, coleoptera) properties. Close ecological agreement exists between fossil indicators and allows the inference that the environment in the vicinity of the deposits was a dwarf shrub tundra of the type met today in high latitude areas of Scandinavia and arctic Russia. The latest in a series of radiocarbon dates from the site produced determinations beyond the limits of the method, although the geomorphological and fossil evidence appears to point to an interstadial date within Oxygen Isotope Stages 5a or 5c. The site has special significance for arguments concerning the much-debated concept of ‘Moraineless Buchan’; indeed, evidence is presented which supports the concept of extensive ice sheet glaciation during the Late Devensian for this crucial geographical area. If Buchan is to be seen as a further casualty amongst other disputed ice-free enclaves, then a return to earlier models of extensive ice sheet glaciation in the Late Devensian of Scotland would seem to be necessary. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Excavations of deposits filling a closed basin within glacial drift at Church Moss, Davenham, near Northwich (Cheshire, England) revealed a sequence of Late‐glacial and Early Holocene sediments. Analyses of pollen and plant and invertebrate macrofossils were undertaken, together with loss‐on‐ignition analyses and a programme of AMS radiocarbon dating, to provide a record of changing biostratigraphy and climatic and ecological regimes. The infilling of features identified as frost‐cracks in the till flooring the basin gave remains that reflected conditions of extreme cold towards the end of the Devensian. The pollen record from a 3.5 m sequence of peat towards the deepest part of the basin, supported by radiocarbon dates, shows that organic deposition was initiated during the Late‐glacial Interstadial and continued into the early part of the Holocene. There was some evidence for a cool episode during the interstadial, with amelioration prior to the rapid onset of the tundra conditions of the Loch Lomond Stadial. Following the stadial, amelioration was rapid. There was evidence from both central and marginal sequences for a mosaic of fen dominated by sedges and often also mosses, with short‐lived small pools through much of the succession. We present BV photometry and simultaneous high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy of the newly-discovered γ Doradus variable HR 8330 taken during the 1997 and 1998 observing seasons. We calculate power spectra for the B - and V -band data sets and for the time series defined throughout the observing season at each point across the Fe ii λ 4508.289 and the Ti ii λ 4501.278 line profiles to search for periodic variability. Period analysis reveals a single, 2.6-d period in both the photometric and the spectroscopic data, with a 237° phase lag between them. Based on the location of HR 8330 in the HR diagram and the characteristics of its photometric and spectroscopic variations, we conclude that HR 8330 is a bona fide γ Doradus-type pulsating variable. 相似文献

Voltammetric methods using direct insertion of a gold-amalgam microelectrode with a sensitive, computercontrolled voltammeter detected soluble iron(II) sulfide, [FeS]aq, in the porewaters of anoxic, sulfidic, fine-grained sediments from the Loughor Estuary, Wales. The voltammetric results are reproducible. Studies of cores stored in sealed, refrigerated containers for up to 21 d reveal no measurable oxidation. [FeS]aq forms in this estuarine environment as a result of the dissolution of amorphous FeS, and appears to be involved in the formation of pyrite. [FeS]aq makes no significant contribution to the total sulfide and iron contents of the sediment but could constitute an important component of the dissolved Fe(II) and S(−II) contents of the porewater. Mass balance calculations show pyrite forms in this system by the addition of sulfur to FeS rather than by the loss of iron from FeS. The overall process appears to involve [FeS]aq as an intermediary. Although the porewaters of the Loughor Estuary sediments are iron-rich relative to seawater, the iron sulfide-forming process is iron-limited rather than sulfide-limited. Reactive iron is bound to sulfide rapidly in the sediment. After the reactive iron is bound to sulfide, additional sulfide produced is fixed as pyrite. 相似文献

Measurement of the sortable silt current speed proxy using the Sedigraph 5100 and Coulter Multisizer IIe: precision and accuracy 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The weight percentage and mean size of the 10–63 μm terrigenous silt fraction (termed 'sortable silt') of fine-grained marine sediments have recently been argued to be proxies for near-bottom palaeocurrent intensity. This paper details the accuracy and precision of the Sedigraph 5100 and the Coulter Multisizer IIe in determining the weight percentage and mean size of the sortable silt at abundances characteristic of deep-ocean sediments. Three sortable silt standards and a fine silt/clay diluent were generated from natural deep-sea sediment of the Iceland Basin. These were used to produce silty clays with standard additions of sortable silt ranging from 1% to 20% of the total by weight. Accuracy was measured relative to the size of the pure spike measured by each instrument. At sortable silt abundance >5%, the Sedigraph and the Coulter Multisizer estimate both weight percentage and mean grain size precisely and accurately, while below 5%, instrumental noise degrades their performance. On the basis of the Sedigraph results, a series of percentage errors is defined, which may be applied to sortable silt mean size and weight percentage estimates used in palaeoceanographic near-bottom current reconstruction. It is suggested that, ideally, palaeocurrent reconstructions should be based on Sedigraph determinations of the 0–63 μm grain size distribution, yielding both mean and abundance, or on Coulter Multisizer determinations of the sortable silt grain size mean. The Coulter Multisizer may prove especially useful in regions of very depleted (<5%) sortable silt component. 相似文献

In this study, the surface drift of an inextensible film due to a series of progressive gravity waves is investigated both analytically and experimentally. A second approximation of the conformal mapping that transforms the progressive sinusoidal surface to the horizontal axis is applied, thus allowing the analysis to formally accommodate a boundary layer thickness that is much less than the wave height. By computing the stream function to the third order that is an order higher than the past analysis, a pressure component in phase with the wave slope is revealed. The pressure force generated is comparable to the bottom shear on the thin film induced by the moving fluid and thus cannot be ignored. Based on the combined forces on the surface firm, a mean drift is estimated by assuming that the opposing force is due to the viscous drag induced by the drift motion. The experimental results show that the computed drift velocity based on the present study mostly underestimates the experimental observations, but it is in closer agreement than the classical Phillips' 7/4 estimate. 相似文献

Interpretation of sediments in the floors of valleys opening into western McMurdo Sound has been so problematic that it has hindered understanding of the late Quaternary history of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Lateral moraines and enclosed drift sheets so clearly exposed on the headlands are generally absent within the valleys themselves. Instead, valley-floor sediments and landforms consist of hummocky, stratified fine sediment generally capped by coarser, poorly sorted material, small cross-valley and longitudinal ridges, and lateral ridges that superficially resemble shorelines. One clue as to the origin of these deposits is that at least some of the valleys were occupied by large proglacial lakes during the last glacial maximum (e.g. Glacial Lakes Trowbridge and Washburn in Miers and Taylor Valleys, respectively). This paper describes a new mechanism observed in a modern perennially ice-covered proglacial lake that documents the movement of glacial debris beyond the grounding line across the surface of the lake. This mechanism accounts for the absence of moraines and other ice-contact features on the valley floors, as well as for the presence of the other deposits and landforms mentioned above. 相似文献
