Many developing countries are very vulnerable to flood risk since they are located in climatic zones characterised by extreme precipitation events, such as cyclones and heavy monsoon rainfall. Adequate flood mitigation requires a routing mechanism that can predict the dynamics of flood waves as they travel from source to flood-prone areas, and thus allow for early warning and adequate flood defences. A number of cutting edge hydrodynamic models have been developed in industrialised countries that can predict the advance of flood waves efficiently. These models are not readily applicable to flood prediction in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, however, due to lack of data, particularly terrain and hydrological data. This paper explores the adaptations and adjustments that are essential to employ hydrodynamic models like LISFLOOD-FP to route very high-magnitude floods by utilising freely available Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission digital elevation model, available topographical maps and sparse network of river gauging stations. A 110 km reach of the lower Damodar River in eastern India was taken as the study area since it suffers from chronic floods caused by water release from upstream dams during intense monsoon storm events. The uncertainty in model outputs, which is likely to increase with coarse data inputs, was quantified in a generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation framework to demonstrate the level of confidence that one can have on such flood routing approaches. Validation results with an extreme flood event of 2009 reveal an encouraging index of agreement of 0.77 with observed records, while most of the observed time series records of a 2007 major flood were found to be within 95 % upper and lower uncertainty bounds of the modelled outcomes.  相似文献

Flooding due to excessive rainfall in a short period of time is a frequent hazard in the flood plains of monsoon Asia. In late September 2000, a devastating flood stuck Gangetic West Bengal, India. This particular event has been selected for this study. Instead of following the conventional approach of flooded area delineation and overall damage estimation, this paper seeks to identify the rural settlements that are vulnerable to floods of a given magnitude. Vulnerability of a rural settlement is perceived as a function of two factors: the presence of deep flood water in and around the settlement and its proximity to an elevated area for temporary shelter during an extreme hydrological event. Landsat ETM+ images acquired on 30 September 2000 have been used to identify the non‐flooded areas within the flooded zone. Particular effort has been made to differentiate land from water under cloud shadow. ASTER digital elevation data have been used to assess accuracy and rectify the classified image. The presence of large numbers of trees around rural settlements made it particularly difficult to extract the flooded areas from their spectral signatures in the visible and infrared bands. ERS‐1 synthetic aperture radar data are found particularly useful for extracting the settlement areas surrounded by trees. Finally, all information extracted from satellite imageries are imported into ArcGIS, and spatial analysis is carried out to identify the settlements vulnerable to river inundation. The efficiency of low cost citrus peels as biosorbents for removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solution was investigated in a fixed bed column, a process that could be applied to treat industrial wastewaters similar to commonly used ion exchange columns. Effluent concentration versus time profiles (i.e., breakthrough curves) were experimentally determined in a laboratory‐scale packed bed column for varying operational parameters such as flow rate (2, 9, and 15.5 mL/min), influent cadmium concentration (5, 10, and 15 mg/L), and bed height (24, 48, and 72 cm) at pH 5.5. Column operation was most efficient for empty bed contact times of at least 10 min, which were apparently necessary for mass transfer. While the sorption capacity was largely unaffected by operational variables, the Thomas (Th) rate constant increased with the flow rate, and slightly decreased with increasing column length. Three widely used semi‐mechanistic models (Th, Bohart–Adams, and Yoon–Nelson) were shown to be equivalent and the generalized model was compared with a two‐parameter empirical model (dose‐response). The latter was found to be able to better simulate the breakthrough curve in the region of breakthrough and saturation.  相似文献

A Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) was observed from Diamond Harbour (lat. 22.2°N, long 88.2°E) on 24 October 1995. The variation of -ray intensity was measured in the energy range of 0.3–3.0 MeV for different time spans throughout the period of the eclipse. A CR-39 detector was used to look at the change in the fluxes of neutral and charged particles. The maximum drop ( 25%) in the intensity of -ray was observed in the range 2.5–3 MeV during TSE. The CR-39 results showed the appearance of a good number of tracks and a small variation of proton and neutron flux of 10% which was not significant statistically. Low energy -ray fluxes at sea level originate from the secondary electron-photon components of cosmic rays in the atmosphere; its modulation by TSE is interpreted as follows. The cooling of the atmosphere in the path of the umbra induces a reduction of the height of the main production layer of the nuclear component, as a result of which, fewer µ± mesons (from the decay of the± mesons) decay to e±. This leads to a small reduction in the flux of electron-photon component at sea level which originates from this branch; the main branch of e - component from 0 decay remains nearly unaffected. As the total mass of air remains the same, little or no change in the slow proton or the neutron flux at sea level is expected. These are consistent with the present observations. For a better understanding, further studies of this new phenomenon during future TSE are suggested.  相似文献

Abstract— Soils of the 62-cm deep Apollo 16 double drive tube 60013/14 are mature at the top and submature at the bottom. Modal analyses of 5529 grains from the 90–150 μm and the 500–1000 μm. fractions from 12 levels of the core show that, in general, agglutinate abundance increases somewhat monotonically to the top and mimics the Is/FeO profile. There is a general decrease in the modal abundance of monomineralic fragments towards the top, suggesting that agglutinates were formed in part at the expense of monomineralic grains, especially feldspars, which are by far the most abundant mineral in these soils. In detail, the top 27 cm of the core differs from the bottom 21 cm, and the middle 14 cm is intermediate in its properties. In the upper segment, variations in the abundances of feldspars correspond with those of feldspathic fragmental breccias and cataclastic anorthosites; in the bottom segment, a similar but weak correspondence between feldspars and crystalline matrix breccias is observed. Mixing of the comminuted products of these three rock types likely produced the bulk of the core material. Many single feldspars in all size fractions are remarkably fresh, show no damage from shock, and are similar in appearance to the large feldspars in anorthosites and feldspathic fragmental breccias, which we consider to be the primary sources of single feldspars in this core. Major (Na, Al, Si, K, Ca) and minor (Fe, Ba) element analyses of 198 single feldspar grains indicate the presence of only one population of feldspars, which is consistent with our interpretation of feldspar provenance. Classification of 890 monomineralic feldspar, olivine, pyroxene, and glass spherules on the basis of the presence or absence of thin brownish coating—related to reworking at the surface—shows that coated grains are much more abundant in the top segment than in the bottom segment. A comparison with the mixing and maturation model (McKay et al., 1977) of soils in the core 60009/10, some 60 m away from 60013/14, shows that mixtures of an immature, nearly pure plagioclase soil (dominant in 60009/10) and another immature, crystalline breccia-rich soil (dominant in 60013/14) may have matured through in situ reworking to produce the soils under investigation. We conclude that the soils in this core are products of mixing along soil evolution Path 2 of McKay et al. (1974). Superimposed on that soil column is the reworking of the upper part, which has evolved more recently along Path 1. This core thus represents a consanguineous column of the lunar regolith with an upper reworked segment.  相似文献

A single fragment from an Apollo 16 soil appears to be a soil agglutinate that has experienced thermal metamorphism. Its texture is similar to that observed in many of the samples of recrystallized polymict breccias collected in the lunar highlands. Debris blankets, consisting largely of mineral and lithic clasts and derived from highland bedrock by major impacts, are less likely than agglutinate-rich soil from the highland megaregolith to be the progenitor of this class of recrystallized rocks.  相似文献
