ocean in winter, establish the regularities of changes in the current velocity with depth, and compare the structures of the

Acoustic reflection signatures of four hydro-carbon seeps were classified using near-bottom 25-kHz echosounder profiles.
Echo patterns were compared with ground-truth data obtained by submersible observations and shallow coring. Six echo types
were distinguished: strong reflections from (1) exposed or (2) buried hard substrates, such as authigenic carbonate or gas
hydrate; acoustic scattering in (3) unlayered or (4) layered sediments owing to gas, shells, or disseminated carbonates; (5) attenuation
caused by gas; and (6) undisturbed sediments. Echo type distributions suggest that high spatial variability indicates a younger,
vigorous seep, whereas extensive hard substrate implies an older, encrusted seep.

For a one type of temperature turbulent convection observed in the ocean, i.e., for the two-dimensional roller-type convection,
we propose a model intended for the evaluation of the intensity and depth of penetration of convective motions as functions
of a given heat flow from the sea surface and the temperature gradient in the thermocline. This model is based on the methods
of the theory of turbulent jets and experimental data on the vertical distribution of temperature in the course of convection.
The comparison of the calculated dimensionless values of the depth of penetration of the thermocline in autumn and winter
shows a good qualitative agreement with the data ofin situ measurements.

Meso- or submeso-scale features of the Antarctic sea ice are investigated using the MOS-1/1b MESSR Images (spatial resolution of approximately 50 m) received at Syowa Station. Particular attention is paid to the ice bands and ice streamers in coastal polynyas. In the Antarctic Ocean, ice bands can be often seen not only at the ice edge but also in the ice interior zone throughout the year and they extend for hundreds of kilometers in the latitudinal direction. It is found that the width and spacing of ice bands tend to decrease from winter to summer. The width of ice band is about 2–6 km in August and September, and 0.1–0.7 km in December. The spacing of ice bands is about 3–10 km in August and September, and 0.1–2 km in December. In coastal polynyas, ice streamers, which are composed of new ice, are sometimes observed. Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) from surface sediments, suspended particulate matter and settling particles in the southern Barcelona continental margin were studied in order to evaluate the environmental impact of the anthropogenic metals discharged by the Llobregat River in this Mediterranean area. The temporal variation of heavy metals discharged by this river onto the continental shelf is clearly related to the river water flow. Part of the fine sediment and associated heavy metals transported by the Llobregat River during periods of low river flow accumulate on the river bed, and they are totally removed and discharged onto the Barcelona continental shelf during sporadic river water flow increases. Metals produce significant anomalies of chromium (×2.5), copper (×3.4) and zinc (×3.7) in the surface sediments of the Llobregat prodelta and tend to be transported along the continental shelf following the mean flow. Metals associated with the finest suspended flocs transferred to the slope are controlled by the shelf-slope density front and are transported along slope by the general geostrophic current, instead of accumulating and becoming concentrated in the slope bottom sediments. Settling particulate matter collected in sediment traps on the Barcelona continental slope offshore of the shelf-slope front shows low heavy metal concentrations except in a few sediment trap samples that are significantly metal-enriched in chromium (×4.5) and zinc (×6.8). This enrichment is associated with very short and sporadic river flow increases and is only recorded inside the Foix submarine canyon, which acts as a preferential conduit for the shelf-slope sediment transfer. 相似文献

The paper is concerned with the evaluation of the drift current parameters derived through the use of an analytical model.
In this model, effective when stratification is stable and indifferent, the vertical turbulence coefficient profile is prescribed
by the power function, and hydrodynamic quantities are prescribed using the external parameters of the problem (wind stress,
the Coriolis parameter, and the dimensionless stratification parameter). Model data are compared with the observations of
the upper mixed layer in the vicinity of the oceanic Station C, conducted during one year. It is shown that, under the spring-summer-time
warming conditions, the model at issue is capable of adequately simulating the upper ocean layer dynamics.

This paper discusses the application of acoustic sounding with the purpose of identifying vortical features in the sea. Analysis
of the results of a multidisciplinary acoustic/hydrological experiment conducted in the Black Sea has revealed a stable recurrent
correlation between the amplitudinal variance of echo signals, on the one hand, and the peculiarities of water temperature
fields, on the other. Given these characteristics, the peripheral and the central areas of a mesoscale eddy essentially differed.
This allows us to apply acoustic sounding to identify mesoscale eddies in the sea.
