This paper presents the first glacial chronology for the Lahul Himalaya, Northern India. The oldest glaciation, the Chandra Glacial Stage, is represented by glacially eroded benches at altitudes greater than 4300 m above sea-level. This glaciation was probably of a broad valley type. The second glaciation, the Batal Glacial Stage, is represented by highly weathered and dissected lateral moraines, which are present along the Chandra valley and some of its tributaries. This was an extensive valley glaciation. The third major glaciation, the Kulti Glacial Stage, is represented by well-preserved moraines in the main tributary valleys of the Chandra valley. This represents a less extensive valley glaciation. Two minor glacial advances, the Sonapani I and II, are represented by small sharp-crested moraines, which are within a few hundred metres or few kilometres of the present-day glaciers. The change in style and extent of glaciation is attributed to an increase in aridity throughout the Quaternary, due either to global climatic change or uplift of the Pir Panjal mountains to the south of Lahul, which restricted the northward penetration of the south Asian summer monsoon. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The data on the species composition, trophic structure, and distribution of macrozoobenthos in Amur Bay obtained in 2001 are presented. Long-term changes in the benthos are analyzed. In 2001, the total benthos biomass significantly increased, although the parameters of the species richness declined as compared to 1986–1989. In 2001, as well as in the 1970s and 1980s, the benthos trophic structure was characterized by the prevalence of deposit feeders. The entire structure of the benthos is evaluated as an eutrophic one. Eutrophication of the bay is considered to be the most probable cause of the negative changes in the benthic communities of the bay in 2001, as well as 15 years ago.  相似文献

Metallothioneins (MTs) are small, cysteine-rich proteins which detoxify xenobiotic metals such as cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg). In crustaceans and mammals they consist of two independent domains which are folded around metal-thiolate clusters. MT clusters of different origins, exhibiting distinct, highly conserved cysteine positions on their sequences, show differences in metal-cysteine coordination and reactivity. Lobster-MT, containing two Cd3 beta domains, is an important model for structure-function relationships among the clusters. The influence of (1) the position of the cysteine residues and (2) steric and electrostatic effects of neighboring amino acids on the folding and stability of MT cluster were investigated. Thus, the native lobster beta C and beta N domains (each having nine cysteines and binding three M2+ ions) and a modified domain Cd3 beta C-->N, in which the cysteines of the C-terminal domain were relocated to match the positions of those in the N-terminal domain, were chemically prepared and characterized. The synthetic native domains (Cd3 beta C and Cd3 beta N) were found to exhibit spectroscopic properties, metal-binding affinities and kinetic reactivity similar to the holo-protein. However, the modified Cd3 beta C-->N domain was unusually reactive and in the presence of Chelex, metal chelation resin, aggregated to a Cd5(beta C-->N)2 dimer, which exhibited unusual structure as observed by its 113Cd-nuclear magnetic resonance. These differences in structure and reactivity demonstrated that the requirements for formation of a stable Cd3S9 beta-cluster are more stringent than simply the sequential positions of the cysteines along the peptide chain and must include interactions involving neighboring, noncysteine amino acids.  相似文献

A refined thermodynamic model of H2O and CO2 bearing cordierite based on recent data on volatile incorporation into cordierite (Thompson et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 142:107–118, 2001; Harley and Carrington in J Petrol 42:1595–1620, 2001) reflects non-ideality of channel H2O and CO2 mixing. The dependence of cordierite H2O and CO2 contents on P, T and equilibrium fluid composition has been calculated for the range 600–800°C and 200–800 MPa. It has been used for establishing thermodynamic conditions of cordierite formation and the following retrograde PT paths of cordierite rocks from many localities. Estimates of the H2O and CO2 activities have shown that cordierites in granites, pegmatites and high-pressure granulites were formed in fluid-saturated conditions and wide range of H2O/CO2 relations. Very low cordierite H2O contents in many migmatites may be caused not only by fluid-undersaturated conditions at rock formation and H2O leakage on retrograde PT paths but also by the presence of additional volatile components like CH4 and N2. The pressure dependence of cordierite-bearing mineral equilibria on fluid H2O/CO2 relations has been evaluated.  相似文献

Diffusion modelling of growth-zoned garnet is used in combination with standard geothermometric and geobarometric techniques to estimate cooling and denudation rates from the mafic eclogites of the Red Cliff area, Great Caucasus, Russia. Euhedral garnet porphyroblasts exhibit different degrees of prograde growth zoning depending on the size of the grain (100 μm to several mm in diameter). Zoning patterns are mainly expressed in terms of Fe–Mg exchange, with 100*Mg/(Mg+Fe) increasing from 18–20 to 33–37 from core to rim. Geothermobarometry yields conditions of 680±40 °C and a minimum of 1.6±0.2 GPa and of 660±40 °C and 0.8±0.2 GPa for the high-pressure and retrograde stages of equilibration, respectively. A temperature of 600±40 °C has been recorded for the late-stage metamorphic overprint in the mica schists surrounding the eclogites. Relaxation of garnet zoning profiles was modelled for three different hypothetical PT t trajectories, all with an initial temperature of 680 °C and a pressure change of 0.8 GPa. The first two trajectories involve decompression associated with regular cooling down to 660 °C (near isothermal) and 600 °C. The third path is a two-step trajectory comprising near-isobaric cooling down to 600 °C followed by isothermal decompression to 0.8 GPa. These P–T trajectories cover as wide a range of pressure and temperature changes endured by the rocks as possible, thus representing extreme cases for calculating cooling and exhumation rates. Calculations indicate that the zoning pattern of the smallest garnet (i.e. garnet for which the zoning is most easily eliminated during post-growth processes) along the different paths can be preserved for the following average exhumation and cooling rates: path 1, 143 mm a?1 and 102 °C Ma?1; path 2, 60 mm a?1 and 171 °C Ma?1; path 3, 11–30 mm a?1 and 200–400 °C Ma?1. These results are discussed in light of theoretical P–T–t paths extracted from thermal models of regions of thickened crust, and from analogue models of accretionary wedge and continental lithosphere subduction.  相似文献

Summary. Numerical modelling is one of the most efficient methods for an investigation of the relationship between structural features and peculiarities of observed wavefields. It is practically the only method for 2-D and 3-D inhomogeneous media.
An algorithm based on ray theory has been developed for calculations of travel times and amplitudes of seismic waves in 3-D inhomogeneous media with curved interfaces. It was applied for numerical modelling of kinematic and dynamic characteristics of seismic waves propagating in laterally inhomogeneous media.
Travel-time and amplitude patterns were studied in the 2-D and 3-D models of a geosyncline, in which velocity distribution was given by an analytical function of the coordinates. For a more complicated model representing a subducting high-velocity lithospheric plate in a transition zone between oceanic and continental upper mantle, the velocity distribution was given by discrete values on a 2-D non-rectangular grid. It was shown that when a source was placed above the lithospheric plate, a shadow zone appeared along a strike of the structure, i.e. in the direction which is perpendicular to a strong lateral velocity gradient. Travel-time residuals were calculated along the seismological profile for a 3-D velocity distribution in the upper mantle beneath Central Asia, obtained as a result of inversion of travel times by the Backus-Gilbert method. They were found to be in a good agreement with the observed data.  相似文献
