Wave-trains in the solar wind

The main results of Whitham's averaged Lagrangian method for the treatment of linear wave-trains in a weakly inhomogeneous, moving medium are presented briefly. This method is then applied to an ideal, isotropic, one-fluid plasma which can be taken for the lowest order approximation for the interplanetary solar wind expansion.

Patterns of basin fill in Triassic turbidites of the Nanpanjiang basin: implications for regional tectonics and impacts on carbonate‐platform evolution

The Nanpanjiang Basin occurs in a key position for resolving controversies of basin tectonics and patterns of plate assembly at the junction between south China and Southeast Asian plates. Paleocurrent measurements indicate that siliciclastic turbidites in the basin were sourced by the Precambrian Jiangnan uplift to the northeast, the Precambrian Yunkai uplift to the southeast and the Triassic Songma suture to the south. Detrital zircon geochronology reveals Archean (2500 Ma), Paleoproterozoic (1800–1900 Ma), Neoproterozoic (900–1000 Ma) and Paleozoic (420–460 Ma) ages consistent with derivation from the Jiangnan and Yunkai uplifts. A large Permian‐Triassic peak of 250 Ma is present in the southern basin and attenuates northward suggesting derivation from an arc developed along the Songma suture. Sandstone QFL compositions average 65/12/23% and plot in the recycled orogen field except for a few samples in the southern basin that fall in the dissected arc field. The compositions are consistent with derivation from Precambrian basement that includes orogenic complexes. In the southern basin, Middle Triassic turbidites contain greater lithics and feldspars and Lower Triassic turbidites have volcaniclastic composition consistent with derivation from a southerly arc. Our preferred interpretation is evolution from remnant basin to a large peripheral foreland with southward subduction and convergence with Indochina along the Songma suture. The previously proposed Dian‐Qiong zone is not a suture as its map location places it within carbonate platforms bounded by identical stratigraphy. The Nan‐Uttaradit zone is too distant to have provided voluminous siliciclastic flux to the basin. The Nanpanjiang Basin provides an example of the evolution of an exceptionally large foreland with far‐field rejuvenation of Precambrian uplifts and carbonate platforms that were significantly influenced by siliciclastic flux. The timing and pattern of turbidite basin fill impacted platform evolution by enabling margin progradation in areas proximal to siliciclastic sources, whereas platforms distant from sources were driven to aggradation and extreme relief with large‐scale gravitational sector collapse.     

Industrial specialization and economic performance: A case of Czech microregions

An influential body of literature suggests that economic diversity rather than specialization fuels the economic performance of regions and nations. The authors argue that this hypothesis has no universal applicability and that a more differentiated view is needed. In particular, historical specificity of the local environment and structural characteristics of regional economies should be taken into account. They focus on the effects of industrial specialization on economic performance and the vulnerability of Central European post-communist regions, namely Czech microregions with less than 200,000 inhabitants. They examine whether the economic performance and vulnerability of these regions is fuelled rather by industrial specialization or diversity when controlling for other potential determinants of regional economic performance. Their findings show that the dependence of Czech regions on manufacturing correlates with higher economic performance but also with higher regional vulnerability. In addition, industrial specialization within manufacturing was found to be instrumental for the economic performance of regions with high dependence on manufacturing. With a decreasing share of employment in manufacturing, industrial diversity rather than specialization becomes more valuable for the economic performance of Czech regions.     

K 23 — a spatially isolated low surface brightness dwarf galaxy?

Wir möchten aufmerksam machen auf den relativ seltenen Fall einer anscheinend “isolierten” sphärischen Zwerggalaxie K 23 (α = 02^h40^m.5, δ = +16·31'). Am 6 m-Teleskop aufgenommene Platten wurden mit einem Microdensitometer abgetastet und die photometrischen Parameter sowie die Parameter eines angepaßten King-Modells bestimmt. Danach ist K 23 den bekannten Prototypen in der Lokalen Gruppe und der M81-Gruppe sehr ähnlich. Eine Analyse der räumlichen Galaxienverteilung zeigt, daß K 23 wahrscheinlich in der Brücke liegt, die den Lokalen Superhaufen mit dem Perseus-Pisces-Superhaufen verbindet, also nicht wirklich räumlich isoliert ist.     

AM Cas — Spectral variations during the eruption cycles

Spectroscopic investigations of this dwarf nova of Z Camelopardalis type were performed during quiescence and eruption. Although over the period of spectroscopic observations the cycle-length was only 8^d.2 at times, no systematic differences to results on objects of larger cycle-lengths could be established.     

Selection,Statistics and Photometry of Compact Galaxies with Different Instrumental Equipment,Part II. The Cluster Abell 1775

In continuation of part I of our investigation a field of 0.8 near the galactic north pole is investigated with two large photographic telescopes of very different optical constants. The field contains the cluster Abell 1775. Statistics and photometry confirm the results of part I. The fraction of optical compact galaxies up to the identification magnitude 18^m9 (B) is found to be more than 30% of the total number of cluster galaxies. The data for a secondary photometric sequence, which had to be determined for the photometry of the galaxies, are presented.     

Evidence of a star formation burst in a spheroidal dwarf galaxy

We present here the luminosity profile and the colour distribution of the irregular dwarf galaxy UGC 5423 = M81 dwB. Using digital surface photometry we show that UGC 5423 is a burst of young stars in the central body of a larger spheroidal dwarf galaxy.     

UW Persei

This object consists of two visible components; it is not quite sure if the brighter one is variable. An examination on 314 plates gave no further maximum in addition to the three already known historical eruptions. A relationship of the brighter component to the cataclysmic variables is not very probable because of the observed UV weakness.
