Several hominid remains have been discovered in the open-air site of Dmanisi (Georgia), the oldest prehistoric site in Eurasia. Two major arguments prove that this site is close in age to the Plio-Pleistocene boundary: a Villafranchian fauna and the morphological characteristics of hominid remains recently ascribed to Homo georgicus. Direct dating of the lower hominid-bearing level was carried out on volcanic glass and minerals using the 40Ar/39Ar method. The concordant results from two different sampled locations allow the determination of the age of the earliest human presence in Eurasia. This radioisotopic result strengthens the argument that the first dispersal of hominids outside Africa occurred at least 1.8 Ma ago. 相似文献

In a program conducted to isolate AGK3 stars with large proper motions, it has been found that more than one hundred stars seem to be affected by large errors in their published proper motions. For some of those objects south of +25 degrees, new proper motions are being obtained using, as first-epoch positions, the published material of the Astrographic Catalogue. The (J, K)=(1,1) ammonia transition emission has been observed toward six regions with signs of active star formation (AFGL 5142, HH 33/40, AFGL 5157, AFGL 6366S, HHL 73, and S140N), using the 37 m antenna of the Haystack Observatory. We detected and mapped the ammonia emission in all of these sources with the exception of HH 33/40. For a ground-level continuous release of a trace substance like 222Rn, for which the vertical profile of concentrations is exponential, a quantity, equivalent mixing height h, is defined in this paper in the following way. If the substance were to be redistributed uniformly through a layer such that the concentration were to be equal to that at the surface, then the top of the layer would be h.Relative values of h can be obtained from surface measurements of Radon concentrations, but absolute values require estimates of the vertical fluxes of Radon. The recent discoveries of deeply buried Cretaceous reservoir bodies in the Atlantic Ocean revealed that relationships between the distribution of spring carbonate deposits and faults are poorly understood. The well‐exposed Quaternary deposits at Obruktepe (Denizli Basin, Turkey) provide an opportunity to reconstruct the three‐dimensional sedimentary architecture of such a system. Integration of sedimentological, lithofacies and geochemical analyses reveals complexity in the lateral relationships between sedimentary environments, faults and geothermal spring carbonates. Five environmental systems are distinguished based on the lithofacies analysis: (i) vent; (ii) smooth slope; (iii) travertine‐terrace; (iv) tufa‐barrage; and (v) flood systems. Encrusting, baffling and settling sedimentary processes are reflected in data acquired at several scales, from lithofacies observations to the morphology and arrangement of geobodies, together with microfabrics and stable carbon and oxygen isotope data. Mean values of +4·9‰ δ13C and −8·74‰ δ18O Vienna PeeDee Belemnite reflect geothermal circulation of springwaters. The environmental distribution and lithofacies indicate a lateral continuum between travertine and tufa deposits within this hot spring system. This finding supports two depositional models in which water flow variation is the main control on both CaCO3 precipitation and the resulting formation of travertine and tufa. The proposed models address the factors responsible for the development of these complex mound‐shaped carbonate spring deposits, and how they are related to fluid circulation at depth and in association with faults. 相似文献

Functional group analysis was used to determine the major bioturbators in the Dry Tortugas, Florida Keys. The surface community
is dominated by surface deposit feeding polychaetes and burrowing bivalves capable of mixing the top 0–4 cm of the sediment
on time scales of days to weeks. Bioturbation by the Notomastus sp. and Callianassa sp. deep community effectively removes primary sedimentary structures. Their fossilized burrow structures may be geologically

The arsenic content of geothermal hot springs and their sediments in the north-central Andean region of Ecuador has been investigated.
The area of study is located between parallels 1°11′N and 1°30′S and includes five provinces. The area is rich in geothermal
surface manifestations that are mainly used for medicinal baths in recreational complexes. Unfortunately, water residuals
without treatment are released from the recreational facilities to surrounding water bodies. The results indicate that total
arsenic in geothermal waters in this region has a range of 2–969 μg As/L, and sediments contain arsenic ranging from 1.6 to
717.6 mg/kg. Chemical analyses of sediment samples show the presence of sulfur, iron, aluminum and calcium. A high concentration
of natural organic matter was also found in some samples (20–29.5%); thus sorption and coprecipitation can be the main mechanisms
of As immobilization on mineral phases and natural organic matter. 相似文献
