Fracturing of rocks is simulated using an electronic computer, on the assumption that when a stress acts on a model, the fracturing condition is determined according to Mohr's theory and that of Griffith. A rock body is regarded as an aggregate of a grid cell whose strength is expressed by a random number of Gaussian distribution functions and the layered fabric of the rock body is given by inserting layered parts with different strength and with various inclinations. The results displaying the fractures on the grid system suggest that some of the geologic structures such as the echelon or the zigzag pattern of fracture are ascribed to fracturing in a layered or heterogeneous body, and variation of strength and the presence of layered fabric in a rock have a significant influence on fracture patterns developed in the rock.  相似文献

New high-pressure orthorhombic (GdFeO3-type) perovskite polymorphs of MnSnO3 and FeTiO3 have been observed using in situ powder X-ray diffraction in a diamond-anvil cell with synchrotron radiation. The materials are produced by the compression of the lithium niobate polymorphs of MnSnO3 and FeTiO3 at room temperature. The lithium niobate to perovskite transition occurs reversibly at 7 GPa in MnSnO3, with a volume change of -1.5%, and at 16 GPa in FeTiO3, with a volume change of -2.8%. Both transitions show hysteresis at room temperature. For MnSnO3 perovskite at 7.35 (8) GPa, the orthorhombic cell parameters are a=5.301 (2) A, b=5.445 (2) Å, c=7.690 (8) Å and V= 221.99 (15) Å3. Volume compression data were collected between 7 and 20 GPa. The bulk modulus calculated from the compression data is 257 (18) GPa in this pressure region. For FeTiO3 perovskite at 18.0 (5) GPa, cell parameters are a=5.022 (6) Å, b=5.169 (5) Å, c=7.239 (9) Å and V= 187.94 (36) Å3. Based on published data on the quench phases, the FeTiO3 perovskite breaks down to a rocksalt + baddelyite mixture of FeO and TiO2 at 23 GPa. This is the first experimental verification of the pressure-induced breakdown of a perovskite to simple oxides.  相似文献

The infrared reflectivities of crystalline forsterite (Mg2SiO4) were measured for the temperature range 295–50 K for each crystal axis, between wavenumber 5000 and 100 cm−1. The reflection spectra show clear dependence of temperature; most of the bands become more intense, sharper and their peak positions shift to higher wavenumber with decreasing temperature. Reflection spectra were fitted with dispersion formula of damped oscillator model of the dielectric constants and the oscillator parameters in the model were derived. The absorption spectra of forsterite particle are calculated with the derived dielectric constants to show that the forsterite features are good thermal indicator for cold temperature range below 295 K.  相似文献

Signals from the tsunami waves induced by the March 11, 2011 moment magnitude (Mw) 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake and from subsequent resonances were detected as radial velocity variability by a high-frequency ocean surface radar (HF radar) installed on the eastern coast of the Kii Channel, at a range of about 1000 km from the epicenter along the eastern to southern coasts of Honshu Island. A time–distance diagram of band-passed (9–200 min) radial velocity along the beam reveals that the tsunami waves propagated from the continental shelf slope to the inner channel as progressive waves for the first three waves, and then natural oscillations were excited by the waves; and that the direction of the tsunami wave propagation and the axis of the natural oscillations differed from that of the radar beam. In addition, spectral analyses of the radial velocities and sea surface heights obtained in the channel and on the continental shelf slope suggest complex natural oscillation modes excited by the tsunami waves.  相似文献

Polyamines are an essential component of living organisms that influence normal cell growth and development. Despite the possible importance of polyamines for marine microbial ecology, concentrations of polyamines in seawater are not well known.Using HPLC analysis with a cation exchange column and OPA reagent, we determined polyamine concentrations in seawater without carrying out desalting, concentration or derivatization steps prior to chromatography.In seawater collected from Uranouchi Inlet, putrescine and spermidine were the predominant polyamines, ranging from undetectable (N.D.) to 4.4 nM and N.D. to 2.8 nM, respectively. Though other polyamines were detected, the frequency of detection was much lower than that of putrescine and spermidine; concentrations ranged from N.D. to 0.9 nM for cadaverine, and N.D. to 3.2 nM for norspermidine. Norspermine and spermine were detected in only a few samples; their concentrations varied from N.D. to 3.2 nM and N.D. to 0.5 nM, respectively. Sulphur isotopic compositions of pyrite, anhydrite and native sulphur in volcanic ashes discharged by the 1979 eruption of Ontake volcano, Nagano, Japan were determined. The isotopic data indicate that sulphate in anhydrite and a part of native sulphur were produced by the disproportionation reaction of sulphite formed by dissolution of SO2 in volcanic gases into water which filled a mud reservoir probably located just below the crater zone. Some part of H2S in volcanic gases was fixed as pyrite and some was oxidised to form native sulphur. Hydrothermal alteration of country rocks to form pyrite, anhydrite and clay minerals had proceeded in the mud reservoir before eruption at temperatures ranging from 110° to 185°C which were estimated by oxygen isotopic fractionation between anhydrite and water.

With the increasing availability of high-spatial-resolution remote sensing imageries and with the observed limitations of pixel-based techniques, the development and testing of geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) techniques for image classification have become one of the main research areas in geospatial science. This paper examines and compares the classification performance of a pixel-based method and an object-based method as applied to high- (QuickBird satellite image) and medium- (Landsat TM image) spatial-resolution imageries in the context of urban and suburban landscapes. For the pixel-based classification, the maximum-likelihood supervised classification approach was employed. And for the object-based classification, the pixel-based classified maps were integrated with a set of image segments produced using various calibrations. The results show evidence that the object-based method can produce classifications that are more accurate for both high- and medium-spatial- resolution imageries in the context of urban and suburban landscapes.  相似文献

Momo-iwa, Rebun Island, Hokkaido, Japan, is a dacite cryptodome 200–300 m across and 190 m high. The dome is inferred to have intruded wet, poorly consolidated sediment in a shallow marine environment. The internal structure of the dome is concentric, with a massive core, banded rim, and narrow brecciated border, all of which are composed of compositionally uniform feldspar-phyric dacite. Boundaries between each of the zones are distinct but gradational. The massive core consists of homogeneous coherent (unfractured) dacite and is characterized by radial columnar joints 60–200 cm across. The banded rim encircles the massive core and is 40 m wide. It is characterized by large-scale flow banding parallel to the dome surface. The flow banding comprises alternating partly crystalline and more glassy bands 80–150 cm thick. The outermost brecciated border is up to 80 cm thick, and consists of in situ breccia and blocky peperite. The in situ breccia comprises polyhedral dacite clasts 5–20 cm across and a cogenetic granular matrix. The blocky peperite consists of polyhedral dacite clasts 0.5–2 cm across separated by the host sediment (mudstone). The internal structures of the dome suggest endogenous growth involving a continuous magma supply during a single intrusive phase and simple expansion from the interior. Although much larger, the internal structures of Momo-iwa closely resemble those of lobes in subaqueous felsic lobe-hyaloclastite lavas.  相似文献

IODP Expedition 350 was the first to be drilled in the rear part of the Izu-Bonin, although several sites had been drilled in the arc axis to fore-arc region; the scientific objective was to understand the evolution of the Izu rear arc, by drilling a deep-water volcaniclastic section with a long temporal record (Site U1437). The Izu rear arc is dominated by a series of basaltic to dacitic seamount chains up to ~100-km long roughly perpendicular to the arc front. Dredge samples from these are geochemically distinct from arc front rocks, and drilling was undertaken to understand this arc asymmetry. Site U1437 lies in an ~20-km-wide basin between two rear arc seamount chains, ~90-km west of the arc front, and was drilled to 1804 m below the sea floor (mbsf) with excellent recovery. We expected to drill a volcaniclastic apron, but the section is much more mud-rich than expected (~60%), and the remaining fraction of the section is much finer-grained than predicted from its position within the Izu arc, composed half of ashes/tuffs, and half of lapilli tuffs of fine grain size (clasts <3 cm). Volcanic blocks (>6.4 cm) are only sparsely scattered through the lowermost 25% of the section, and only one igneous unit was encountered, a rhyolite peperite intrusion at ~1390 mbsf. The lowest biostratigaphic datum is at 867 mbsf (~6.5 Ma), the lowest palaeomagnetic datum is at ~1300 mbsf (~9 Ma), and the rhyolite peperite at ~1390 mbsf has yielded a U–Pb zircon concordia intercept age of (13.6 + 1.6/?1.7) Ma. Both arc front and rear arc sources contributed to the fine-grained (distal) tephras of the upper 1320 m, but the coarse-grained (proximal) volcaniclastics in the lowest 25% of the section are geochemically similar to the arc front, suggesting arc asymmetry is not recorded in rocks older than ~13 Ma.  相似文献

The topographic effect of a meridional marine ridge on the spin-down of a cyclonic eddy is discussed by use of a two layer model. It is shown that cyclonic eddies on the eastern side of a marine ridge decay in a shorter time in comparison with those on the western side. The fast decay on the eastern side is mainly due to the planetary effect, which carries the eddy westward to a shallower region on the ridge, where remarkable frictional spin-down is carried out. Conversely, westward shift of the similar cyclonic eddy yields a weak bottom effect in the western side. It is inferred that the resulting remarkable spin-down on the eastern side of a marine ridge is one of the causes of the observed fast decay of the cyclonic cold water mass accompanied by the large meander of the Kuroshio on the eastern side of the Izu Ridge south of Japan.  相似文献
