Limbe town and surrounding areas, on the SE foot slopes of the active Mt Cameroon Volcano, have experienced numerous small-scale
shallow landslides within the last 20 years. These resulted in the loss of ~30 lives and significant damage to farmland and
properties. Landslides and their scars are identified in the field, and their geometry systematically measured to construct
a landslide inventory map for the study area. Specific landslides are investigated in detail to identify site-specific controlling
and triggering factors. This is to constrain key input parameters and their variability for subsequent susceptibility and
risk modeling, for immediate local and regional applications in land-use planning. It will also enable a rapid exploration
of remediation strategies that are currently lacking in the SW and NW regions of Cameroon. Typical slides within the study
area are small-scale, shallow, translational earth, and debris slides though some rotational earth slides were also documented.
The depletion zones have mean widths of 22 m ± 16.7 m and lengths of 25 ± 23 standard deviation. Estimated aerial extents
of landslide scars and volume of generated debris range from 101 to 104 m2 and 2 to 5 × 104 m3, respectively. A key finding is that most slope instabilities within the study area are associated with and appear to be
exacerbated by man-made factors such as excavation, anarchical construction, and deforestation of steep slopes. High intensity
rainfall notably during localized storms is the principal triggering factor identified so far. The findings from this case
study have relevance to understanding some key aspects of locally devastating slope instabilities that commonly occur on intensely
weathered steep terrains across subtropical Africa and in the subtropics worldwide and affecting an ever denser and most vulnerable

Post‐tensioned (PT) self‐centering moment frames were developed as an alternative to welded moment‐resisting frames (MRFs). Lateral deformation of a PT frame opens gaps between beams and columns. The use of a composite slab in welded MRFs limits the opening of gaps at the beam‐to‐column interfaces but cannot be adopted in PT self‐centering frames. In this study, a sliding slab is used to minimize restraints to the expansion of the PT frame. A composite slab is rigidly connected to the beams in a single bay of the PT frame. A sliding device is installed between the floor beams and the beams in other bays, wherever the slab is allowed to slide. Many shaking table tests were conducted on a reduced‐scale, two‐by‐two bay one‐story specimen, which comprised one PT frame and two gravitational frames (GFs). The PT frame and GFs were self‐centering throughout the tests, responding in phase with only minor differences in peak drifts that were caused by the expansion of the PT frame. When the specimen was excited by the 1999 Chi‐Chi earthquake with a peak ground acceleration of 1.87g, the maximum interstory drift was 7.2% and the maximum lateral force was 270 kN, equal to 2.2 times the yield force of the specimen. Buckling of the beam bottom flange was observed near the column face, and the initial post‐tensioning force in the columns and beams decreased by 50 and 22%, respectively. Knowledge of peatland initiation, accumulation, and decline or cessation is critical in understanding peatland development and the related carbon source/sink effect. In this study, we investigated the development of three peat profiles along the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (ETP) and compared the results with those of our previous work along this transect. Our work showed that the initiation over the northern ETP is later and the slowdown/cessation earlier than in the middle to southern ETP. The timing of optimum peatland formation over the northern ETP lags the Holocene climatic optimum. These spatio-temporal differences are likely to be related to the intensity of Asian summer monsoon. Our work suggests that some peatlands along the ETP transect have returned or are now returning their previously captured carbon to the atmosphere and thus act as carbon sources. Some peatlands still have net accumulation at present, but the rates have been reduced concomitant with the decreasing summer monsoon intensity. We speculate that more of the previously stored carbon in the ETP peatlands will be re-emitted to the atmosphere if the aridity continues, as might occur under a continuous global-warming scenario. 相似文献

The objective of this paper is to discuss the effectiveness of visualizing online 3D terrain draped with different satellite imageries. The topographic data of the study area were obtained from the contour maps of Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia. The high resolution satellite imageries used in this project involving QUICKBIRD (0.6 m resolution), IKONOS (1 m resolution), and SPOT5 (5 m resolution). R2V software was used for editing the contour data, whereas Arc GIS was used for overlaying the imageries over the 3D terrain data. Then the data were exported into Virtual Reality Markup Language to compare the effectiveness of different satellite imageries based on the data file size, imageries size, number of images tile, loading time during office hours (from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and out of office hours (after 5 p.m.), frame rate per second, and visualization quality. The results revealed that IKONOS satellite imageries are better for an effective online 3D terrain visualization utilizing GIS data even though it has lower resolution compared to QUICKBIRD. 相似文献

Co-seismic deformation derived from GPS observations during April 20th, 2013 Lushan Earthquake,Sichuan, China 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We process the standard 30 s, static GPS data and the 1 s, high-rate GPS (HRGPS) data provided by the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China with GAMIT/GLOBK software package, and obtain the co-seismic displacements of near field and far field, and the epoch-by-epoch time series of HRGPS during Lushan earthquake. GPS data from about 20 sites in Sichuan province, which located between 40 and 450 km from the epicenter, are analyzed so as to study the characteristics of the static displacements and the dynamic crustal deformations, with periods ranging from several minutes to over a month. The result shows that: the static displacements caused by Lushan earthquake are limited to several centimeters; the nearest station SCTQ at 43 km from the epicenter has the largest static displacement of about 2 cm, while the other stations generally have insignificant displacements of less than 5 mm. the stations in the east of Sichuan–Yunnan region shifts 5–10 mm toward the southwest, and the stations in the middle-west of Sichuan Basin moves indistinctively 1–2 mm toward the northwest; station SCTQ has the largest kinematic displacement of about 4 and 3 cm peak-to-peak on the north and east component, respectively, and is much greater than the static permanent displacement; for the stations located at a distance greater than 150 km from the epicenter, the kinematic motions are generally insignificant; exceptionally, station SCNC and station SCSN in central Sichuan Basin have significant kinematic motions although they are more than 200 km away from the epicenter. 相似文献

Most phyllosilicates on Mars appear to be associated with ancient terrains. As such, they may have experienced shock heating produced by impacts and could have been significantly altered or melted. We characterized the effects of high temperatures on the mid-to-far-infrared (mid-to-far-IR) emission (100–1400 cm?1; 7.1–100 μm) and near-infrared (NIR) reflectance (1.2–2.5 μm) spectra of phyllosilicates by measuring experimentally calcined (100–900 °C) phyllosilicates and also two zeolites. Correlated differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were also performed on each sample to provide insight into the thermal activities of the phyllosilicates and natural zeolites. Our results indicate that all phyllosilicates exhibit characteristic degradations in both NIR and mid-to-far-IR spectral properties between 400 and 800 °C, mainly attributable to the dehydroxylation and recrystallization processes as temperature increases. Spectral features of natural zeolites persist to higher temperatures compared to features of phyllosilicates during heating treatments. The thermal behaviors of phyllosilicate infrared (IR) properties are greatly influenced by the compositions of the octahedral cations: (1) changes in both the NIR and mid-to-far-IR spectra of phyllosilicates tend to occur at lower temperatures (300–400 °C) in the Fe3+-rich samples as compared to the Al3+-rich types (400–600 °C); (2) Mg2+-trioctahedral phyllosilicates hectorite, saponite, and sepiolite all display major mid-to-far-IR spectral changes at 700 °C, corresponding to the formation of enstatite; (3) phyllosilicates that have minor replacement of Mg2+ for Al3+ in octahedral positions (e.g. cheto-type montmorillonite and palygorskite) show an absorption band at ~920 cm?1 that becomes strong at 900 °C. Inconsistency between spectral behaviors in the mid-to-far-IR and NIR regions is also discussed for phyllosilicates. Results from this study have provided suggestive evidence for the scenario that some phyllosilicates could lose all original spectral features in mid-to-far-IR region while maintaining their characteristic hydration bands in NIR region in the same temperature range. 相似文献

Moment connections in an existing steel building located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan were rehabilitated to satisfy seismic requirements based on the 2005 AISC seismic provisions. Construction of the building was ceased in 1996 due to financial difficulties and was recommenced in 2007 with enhanced connection performance. Steel moment connections in the existing building were constructed by groove welding the beam flanges and bolting the beam web to the column. Four moment connections, two from the existing steel building, were cyclically tested. A non‐rehabilitated moment connection with bolted web‐welded flanges was tested as a benchmark. Three moment connections rehabilitated by welding full‐depth side plates between the column face and beam flange inner side were tested to validate the rehabilitation performance. Test results revealed that (1) the non‐rehabilitated existing moment connection made by in situ welding process prior to 1996 had similar deformation capacity as contemporary connection specimens made by laboratory welding process, (2) all rehabilitated moment connections exhibited excellent performance, exceeding a 4% drift without fractures of beam flange groove‐welded joints, and (3) presence of the full‐depth side plates effectively reduced beam flange tensile strain near the column face by almost half compared with the non‐rehabilitated moment connection. The connection specimens were also modeled using the non‐linear finite element computer program ABAQUS to further confirm the effectiveness of the side plate in transferring beam moments to the column and to investigate potential sources of connection failure.
