Abstract— Depending on their velocity, entry angle and mass, extraterrestrial dust particles suffer certain degrees of heating during entry into Earth's atmosphere, and the mineralogy and chemical composition of these dust particles are significantly changed. In the present study, pulse-heating experiments simulating the atmospheric entry heating of micrometeoroids were carried out in order to understand the mineralogical and chemical changes quantitatively as well as to estimate the peak temperature experienced by the particles during entry heating. Fragments of the CI chondrites Orgueil and Alais as well as pyrrhotites from Orgueil were used as analogue material. The experiments show that the volatile elements S, Zn, Ga, Ge, and Se can be lost from 50 to 100 μm sized CI meteorite fragments at temperatures and heating times applicable to the entry heating of similar sized cosmic dust particles. It is concluded that depletions of these elements relative to CI as observed in micrometeorites are mainly caused by atmospheric entry heating. Besides explaining the element abundances in micrometeorites, the experimentally obtained release patterns can also be used as indicators to estimate the peak heating of dust particles during entry. Using the abundances of Zn and Ge and assuming their original concentrations close to CI, a maximum heating of 1100–1200 °C is obtained for previously analyzed Antarctic micrometeroites. Thermal alteration also strongly influenced the mineralogy of the meteorite fragments. While the unheated samples mainly consisted of phyllosilicates, these phases almost completely transformed into olivine and pyroxene in the fragments heated to ≥800 °C. Therefore, dust particles that still contain hydrous minerals were probably never heated to temperatures ≥800 °C in the atmosphere. During continued heating, the grain size of the newly formed silicates increased and the composition of the olivines equilibrated. Applying these results quantitatively to Antarctic micrometeorites, typical peak temperatures in the range of 1100–1200 °C during atmospheric entry heating are deduced. This temperature range corresponds to the one obtained from the volatile element concentrations measured in these micrometeorites and points to an asteroidal origin of the particles.  相似文献

The flotation cell is quantified as a mixing device for one, two, and three phase systems using combinations of water, air, and solids. To do this, power consumption was measured as a function of impeller speed, rate of aeration, and solids concentration. Initial suspension of solids and dispersion of suspended solids throughout the water or water/air system were also studied as influenced by impeller speed, particle size and solids concentration. The power number and air flow number were used to correlate the data.Flotation studies with a zinc ore using three sizes of cells of the same design, showed that aeration had to be controlled in the smaller cells to duplicate the results in the cell of commercial size. For optimum results the flow number range in the smallest cell was less than the critical value for suspension of coarse particles. Operating flow numbers for the three cell sizes under optimum conditions were close; commercial cells of the same size operating elsewhere appear to have two to three times higher flow numbers.The general relationships among air flow, impeller speed, particle suspension and flotation are discussed with particular reference to scale-up problems and coarse particle flotation. Both impeller speed and aeration should be considered as variables requiring systematic study and independent adjustment.  相似文献

The toxic effects of the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of a natural gas condensate on the larvae of five brooding coral species of the Family Pocilloporidae were examined in short term (96 h) bioassays. Lethality was observed in some larvae of Seriatopora hystrix and Seriatopora guttatus upon exposure to high concentrations of the condensate WAF, while those of Stylophora pistillata, Pocillopora damicornis and Pocillopora verrucosa did not experience mortality. Furthermore, increasing concentrations of WAF produced either delayed or impeded metamorphosis for all species except P. damicornis. Growth of juveniles, exposed to different WAF treatments for 96 h during their larval/early juvenile stages, was measured after 30 d. Marked decrease in subsequent growth rate (polyp count) was observed for S. hystrix, S. guttatus and S. pistillata with increasing WAF concentration. The results showed differential susceptibility of larvae of closely related coral species to oil stress, with the following sensitivity ranking: S. guttatus>S. hystrix>S. pistillata>P. verrucosa>P. damicornis. Oil exposure during the planktonic, larval stage of susceptible corals can adversely affect survivorship, recruitment and/or subsequent colony growth, thereby having profound consequences for the abundance of these corals in space and time.  相似文献

From 1995 up to the present, fish pens proliferated in the municipal waters of Bolinao, northern Philippines. Since then, fish kills and phytoplankton blooms have been recurrent. Have fishpens altered the phytoplankton community composition and production of these waters? The phytoplankton community in Cape Bolinao, Lingayen Gulf is typical of a tropical coastal area where diatoms alternate with dinoflagellates during the dry and wet seasons. In the nutrient-rich fish pens, phytoplankton in this study showed a lower diatom/dinoflagellate ratio and unusually high phytoplankton counts of 10(4) cells/l and even as high as 10(5) cells/l. Correlations between physico-chemical parameters, phytoplankton production and community composition were made in 2001. This paper tried to explain the occurrence of a Cylindrotheca closterium bloom (10(5) cells/l), during the dry season of the same year and a Prorocentrum minimum bloom (4.7 x 10(5) cells/l), which accompanied a massive fish kill during January 2002.  相似文献
