Desalination alters a basic premise of water geography – fresh water flows from the sea inward, rather than the other way around. But, is this observation important? To address this question it is necessary to identify the potential ramifications of the changes in the water geography brought about by desalination. Israel is used as a basis for identifying these ramifications as it has recently embarked on a large-scale desalination program. The direct readily observable implications of the three main attributes of desalination, the reversal of flow direction, the continuity of water production, regardless of weather and climate vagrancies, and its cost are first spelled out. Then the potential ramifications for internal power structures, pricing and transboundary water agreements are discussed for the Israeli and Israeli–Arab scene. It is shown that the spatial flexibility introduced by desalination may undermine existing power relations within the water sector, which were based on the previous water geography. In the Israeli case these changes may be used to undermine the monopoly power of the national water company and of its organized labor, thereby advancing a neoliberal agenda. Desalination may have also significant distributional implications, as a function of the pricing effects it may have. Finally, the new water geography raises new issues in the Israeli–Arab water scene. The general insights gained from the Israeli case are then spelled out.  相似文献

The Bet She’an and Harod Valleys in Israel are regional recipients and mixing zones for groundwater draining from a multiple aquifer system, which includes carbonate and basalt aquifers and deep-seated pressurized brines. The aquifers drain through two types of outlets, distinct and mixed. The latter type is mainly conditioned by the occurrence of fault-blocks related to the Jordan Rift system, which act as connecting media between the aquifers and facilitate interaquifer flow. Conjoint application of rare earth element distribution and water isotopes enables detection of the local areas replenishment by rainfall infiltration and, in connection with the position of wells or springs, the identification of groundwater flow paths. Once stationary equilibria are established changes of REY composition between REY in groundwater and their surface adsorption, are negligible. In areas with little soil coverage and vegetation even recharge over young Tertiary and diagenetic Cretaceous limestones is distinguishable by their REY distribution patterns. Groundwater recharged over Tertiary limestones show higher REY abundance and more significant Ce anomalies than those derived from the Cretaceous limestones. Weathering of alkali olivine basalts leads to REY patterns in groundwater depleted in the middle REE. The improved knowledge of the hydrological systems is thought to be useful for regional hydrogeological modeling and for designing rational water management schemes.  相似文献

Observations of the scattering of acoustic waves by sunspots show a substantial deficit in scattered power relative to incident power. A number of calculations have attempted to model this process in terms of absorption at the magnetohydrodynamic Alfvén resonance. The results presented here extend these calculations to the case of a highly structured axisymmetric translationally invariant flux-tube embedded in a uniform atmosphere. The fractional energy absorbed is calculated for models corresponding to flux-tubes of varying radius, mean flux-density and location below the photosphere. The effects of twist are also included.It is found that absorption can be very efficient even in models with low mean magnetic flux density, provided the flux is concentrated into intense slender annuli. Twist is found to increase the range of wave numbers over which absorption is efficient, but it does not remove the low absorption at low azimuthal orders which is a feature of resonance absorption calculations in axisymmetric geometry, and which is in conflict with observation.These results suggest that resonance absorption could be an efficient mechanism in plage fields and fibril sunspots as well as in monolithic sunspots. At present it is too early to make any definite deductions about sunspot structure from the observations, but the possible future use of sunspot seismology to resolve open questions in the theory of sunspots is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Wave observation in the marginal ice zone with the TerraSAR-X satellite   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
This article investigates the penetration of ocean waves into the marginal ice zone (MIZ), observed by satellite, and likewise provides a basis for the future cross-validation of respective models. To this end, synthetic aperture radar images from the TerraSAR-X satellite (TS-X) and numerical simulations of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are used. The focus is an event of swell waves, developed during a storm passage in the Atlantic, penetrating deeply into the MIZ off the coast of Eastern Greenland in February 2013. The TS-X scene which is the basis for this investigation extends from the ice-free open ocean to solid ice. The variation of the peak wavelength is analysed and potential sources of variability are discussed. We find an increase in wavelength which is consistent with the spatial dispersion of deep water waves, even within the ice-covered region.  相似文献

An international wheat trade model incorporating climate variability is used to simulate different scenarios when wheat producers in the USA, Canada, and Australia adopt El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-based climate forecasts for use in production decisions. Adoption timing and rates are varied across countries in the different scenarios. The results are consistent between the scenarios examined. Early adopters benefit the most, there is no incentive for more producers to adopt after 60 to 95% have adopted (meaning the adoption ceiling has been reached), and slower adoption corresponds to ceilings closer to 60 than 95%. When individual countries must decide whether or not to invest in ENSO technology and producer education programs to encourage adoption, results indicate the dominant strategy for each country is to invest. This is especially true if producers in other countries are adopting the use of climate forecasts.  相似文献

 The efficiency of a sequential data assimilation scheme relies on the capability to describe the error covariance. This aspect is all the more relevant if one needs accurate statistics on the estimation error. Frequently an ad hoc function depending on a few parameters is proposed, and these parameters are tuned, estimated or updated. This usually requires that the covariance is second-order stationary (i.e. depends only on the distance between two points). In this paper, we discuss this feature and show that even in simple applications (such as one-dimensional hydrodynamics), this assumption does not hold and may lead to poorly described estimation errors. We propose a method relying on the analysis of the error term and the use of the hydrodynamical model to generate one part of the covariance function, the other part being modeled using a second-order stationary approach. This method is discussed using a twin experiment in the case where a physical parameter is erroneous, and improves significantly the results: the model bias is strongly reduced and the estimation error is well described. Moreover, it enables a better adaptation of the Kalman gain to the actual estimation error.  相似文献

High rill density may be regarded as indicative of frequent and integrated runoff along a drainage network. However, field observations of soil development and rill geometry in small, first-order catchments (0.1 to 1 ha) of the Zin Valley Badlands, northern Negev, Israel, suggest a pattern of partial area contribution and frequent flow discontinuities along hillslopes and channels. Changing soil properties, associated with an increase of slope angle and slope length, appear to be responsible for high infiltration on the slopes, leading to nonuniform runoff generation within small drainage basins. Runoff observation, sprinkling tests, and soil analysis along ridges and sideslopes were carried out to test this hypothesis. The results confirmed that infiltration capacity on the sideslopes is significantly higher than on the ridges. Under current rainfall conditions, only extreme rainfall intensities are sufficient to generate runoff along entire slopes. The discontinuous nature of most runoff events causes erosion on ridges and deposition on slopes, which enhances soil development on the valley sideslopes, creating a positive feedback on infiltration rate and depth. This demonstrates that the links between within-storm rainfall conditions and spatial distribution of soil characteristics have to be incorporated into our understanding of landscape development in badlands.  相似文献
