As the 7 December 2007 equinox of Uranus approached, collaboration between ring and atmosphere observers in the summer and fall of 2007 produced a substantial collection of ground-based observations using the 10-m Keck telescope with adaptive optics and space-based observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. Both near-infrared and visible-wavelength imaging and spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopic observations were obtained. We used observations spanning the period from 7 June 2007 through 9 September 2007 to identify and track cloud features, determine atmospheric motions, characterize cloud morphology and dynamics, and define changes in atmospheric band structure. Atmospheric motions were obtained over a wider range of latitudes than previously was possible, extending to 73°N, and for 28 cloud features we obtained extremely high wind-speed accuracy through extended tracking times. We confirmed the existence of the suspected northern hemisphere prograde jet, locating its peak near 58°N. The new results confirm a small N-S asymmetry in the zonal wind profile, and the lack of any change in the southern hemisphere between 1986 (near solstice) and 2007 (near equinox) suggests that the asymmetry may be permanent rather than seasonally reversing. In the 2007 images, we found two prominent groups of discrete cloud features with very long lifetimes. The one near 30°S has departed from its previous oscillatory motion and started a significant northward drift, accompanied by substantial morphological changes. The complex of features near 30°N remained at a nearly fixed latitude, while exhibiting some characteristics of a dark spot accompanied by bright companion features. Smaller and less stable features were used to track cloud motions at other latitudes, some of which lasted over many planet rotations, though many could not be tracked beyond a single transit. A bright band has developed near 45°N, while the bright band near 45°S has begun to decline, both events in agreement with the idea that the asymmetric band structure of Uranus is a delayed response to solar forcing, but with a surprisingly short delay of only a few years. 相似文献

This paper considers the hemispheric pattern of solar filaments using newly developed simulations of the real photospheric
and 3D coronal magnetic fields over a six-month period, on a global scale. The magnetic field direction in the simulation
is compared directly with the chirality of observed filaments, at their observed locations. In our model the coronal field
evolves through a continuous sequence of nonlinear force-free equilibria, in response to the changing photospheric boundary
conditions and the emergence of new magnetic flux. In total 119 magnetic bipoles with properties matching observed active
regions are inserted. These bipoles emerge twisted and inject magnetic helicity into the solar atmosphere. When we choose
the sign of this active-region helicity to match that observed in each hemisphere, the model produces the correct chirality
for up to 96% of filaments, including exceptions to the hemispheric pattern. If the emerging bipoles have zero helicity, or
helicity of the opposite sign, then this percentage is much reduced. In addition, the simulation produces a higher proportion
of filaments with the correct chirality after longer times. This indicates that a key element in the evolution of the coronal
field is its long-term memory, and the build-up and transport of helicity from low to high latitudes over many months. It
highlights the importance of continuous evolution of the coronal field, rather than independent extrapolations at different
times. This has significant consequences for future modelling such as that related to the origin and development of coronal

Recent studies show that active-region (AR) upflowing plasma, observed by the EUV-Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode, can gain access to open-field lines and be released into the solar wind (SW) via magnetic-interchange reconnection at magnetic null-points in pseudo-streamer configurations. When only one bipolar AR is present on the Sun and is fully covered by the separatrix of a streamer, such as AR 10978 in December 2007, it seems unlikely that the upflowing AR plasma can find its way into the slow SW. However, signatures of plasma with AR composition have been found at 1 AU by Culhane et al. (Solar Phys. 289, 3799, 2014) that apparently originated west of AR 10978. We present a detailed topology analysis of AR 10978 and the surrounding large-scale corona based on a potential-field source-surface (PFSS) model. Our study shows that it is possible for the AR plasma to move around the streamer separatrix and be released into the SW via magnetic reconnection, which occurs in at least two main steps. We analyse data from the Nançay Radioheliograph (NRH) in a search for evidence of the chain of magnetic reconnections that we propose. We find a noise storm above the AR and several varying sources at 150.9 MHz. Their locations suggest that they might be associated with particles accelerated during the first-step reconnection process at a null point well outside of the AR. We find no evidence of the second reconnection step in the radio data, however. Our results demonstrate that even when it appears highly improbable for the AR plasma to reach the SW, indirect channels involving a sequence of reconnections can make it possible. 相似文献

We present 21 cm H i line observations of 5 × 1 deg2 centred on the local Abell cluster 1367 obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. One hundred sources are detected (79 new H i measurements and 50 new redshifts), more than half belonging to the cluster core and its infalling region. Combining the H i data with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) optical imaging, we show that our H i selected sample follows scaling relations similar to the ones usually observed in optically selected samples. Interestingly, all galaxies in our sample appear to have nearly the same baryon fraction independently of their size, surface brightness and luminosity. The most striking difference between H i and optically selected samples resides in their large-scale distribution: whereas optical and X-ray observations trace the cluster core very well, in H i there is almost no evidence of the presence of the cluster. Some implications on the determination of the cluster luminosity function and H i distribution for samples selected at different wavelength are also discussed. 相似文献

The kinematics of satellite galaxies reflect the masses of the extended dark matter haloes in which they orbit, and thus shed light on the mass–luminosity relation (MLR) of their corresponding central galaxies. In this paper, we select a large sample of centrals and satellites from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and measure the kinematics (velocity dispersions) of the satellite galaxies as a function of the r -band luminosity of the central galaxies. Using the analytical framework presented in More, van den Bosch & Cacciato, we use these data to infer both the mean and the scatter of the MLR of central galaxies, carefully taking account of selection effects and biases introduced by the stacking procedure. As expected, brighter centrals on average reside in more massive haloes. In addition, we find that the scatter in halo masses for centrals of a given luminosity, σlog M , also increases with increasing luminosity. As we demonstrate, this is consistent with σlog L , which reflects the scatter in the conditional probability function P ( L c | M ) , being independent of halo mass. Our analysis of the satellite kinematics yields σlog L = 0.16 ± 0.04 , in excellent agreement with constraints from clustering and group catalogues, and with predictions from a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation. We thus conclude that the amount of stochasticity in galaxy formation, which is characterized by σlog L , is well constrained, independent of halo mass and in a good agreement with current models of galaxy formation. 相似文献

We present an overview of the Space Telescope A901/2 Galaxy Evolution Survey (STAGES). STAGES is a multiwavelength project designed to probe physical drivers of galaxy evolution across a wide range of environments and luminosity. A complex multicluster system at z ∼ 0.165 has been the subject of an 80-orbit F606W Hubble Space Telescope (HST) /Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) mosaic covering the full span of the supercluster. Extensive multiwavelength observations with XMM–Newton , GALEX, Spitzer , 2dF, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the 17-band COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey complement the HST imaging. Our survey goals include simultaneously linking galaxy morphology with other observables such as age, star formation rate, nuclear activity and stellar mass. In addition, with the multiwavelength data set and new high-resolution mass maps from gravitational lensing, we are able to disentangle the large-scale structure of the system. By examining all aspects of an environment we will be able to evaluate the relative importance of the dark matter haloes, the local galaxy density and the hot X-ray gas in driving galaxy transformation. This paper describes the HST imaging, data reduction and creation of a master catalogue. We perform the Sérsic fitting on the HST images and conduct associated simulations to quantify completeness. In addition, we present the COMBO-17 photometric redshift catalogue and estimates of stellar masses and star formation rates for this field. We define galaxy and cluster sample selection criteria, which will be the basis for forthcoming science analyses, and present a compilation of notable objects in the field.
