The petrogenesis of the Fiskenaesset anorthosite body has been investigated using major and trace element data for a large range of rock types from each zone of the complex. The chemistry of these ultramafic to anorthositic cumulates is interpreted in terms of crystal fractionation of a parental, trace element impoverished, tholeiitic magma, involving crystallisation of the cumulus phases olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and (dominant) plagioclase feldspar. Amphibole appears not to have been a significant cumulus phase at any stage of crystallisation of the body, the abundant amphibole found in the rocks of the complex being produced by primary intercumulus crystallisation, supplemented by secondary metamorphic recrystallisation. Similarly, magnetite is unlikely to have been a significant early cumulus phase, although, together with chromite, it crystallised as a cumulus phase at high stratigraphic levels in the complex. The metamorphism appears to be largely isochemical, although sub-solidus metamorphic re-equilibration of the REE can be demonstrated on a grain-size scale.The spatial and temporal association between the anorthosite complex and the bordering metavolcanic amphibolites is matched by a strong similarity between the observed trace element chemistry of the amphibolites and the trace element chemistry of calculated successive liquids for the complex. This is taken to suggest a genetic relationship between the evolution of the anorthosite complex and enclosing amphibolites. The presence of trace element impoverished amphibolites (which are not cumulates) with trace element abundances comparable to those of the suggested parental liquid to the anorthosite complex, is used to derive a major element composition for the primary Fiskenasset magma. This composition approximates a moderately aluminous tholeiitic basalt, which may have been generated by hydrous fusion of previously depleted mantle. This primary magma underwent crystal fractionation under low pressure conditions, allowing the development of extensive plagioclase cumulates.The Fiskenaesset anorthosite, and similar bodies, cannot represent a cumulate residue complementary to the enclosing voluminous tonalitic gneisses, which have a calc-alkaline chemistry controlled by high pressure crystal liquid fractionation. Rather, the association between the cumulate layered complex and bordering supracrustal sequence may imply an ancient ocean crust analogue for the development of this component of Archaean high-grade terrains. It is suggested that slices of such Archaean ocean floor may be emplaced laterally into the base of the continental crust during subduction of oceanic lithosphere at Cordilleran type continental margins.  相似文献

Zircons from 14 compositionally variable granitic rocks were examined in detail using CL image-guided micro-analysis to unravel the complex magmatic history above the southward retreating Hellenic subduction zone system in the Aegean Sea. Previously published U–Pb ages document an episodic crystallisation history from 17 to 11?Ma, with peraluminous (S-type) granitic rocks systematically older than closely associated metaluminous (I-type) granitic rocks. Zircon O- and Hf isotopic data, combined with trace element compositions, are highly variable within and between individual samples, indicative of open-system behaviour involving mantle-derived melts and evolved supracrustal sources. Pronounced compositional and thermal fluctuations highlight the role of magma mixing and mingling, in accord with field observations, and incremental emplacement of distinct melt batches coupled with variable degrees of crustal assimilation. In the course of partial fusion, more fertile supracrustal sources dominated in the earlier stages of Aegean Miocene magmatism, consistent with systematically older crystallisation ages of peraluminous granitic rocks. Differences between zircon saturation and crystallisation temperatures (deduced from zircon Ti concentrations), along with multimodal crystallisation age spectra for individual plutons, highlight the complex and highly variable physico-compositional and thermal evolution of silicic magma systems. The transfer of heat and juvenile melts from the mantle varied probably in response to episodic rollback of the subducting lithospheric slab, as suggested by punctuated crystallisation age spectra within and among individual granitic plutons.  相似文献

What is believed to be a very unusual mode of occurrence for lead in coal has been identified as crocoite (PbCrO4). As part of a larger study on trace elements and mineralogy in the Cretaceous Main Seam in New Zealand, crocoite was found in raw coal samples within the lower part of the coal seam. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and bulk chemical data from a SEM equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyser (EDXA) have confirmed the identity of this mineral. This is apparently the first time that crocoite has been reported in coal. Crocoite usually occurs only in the oxidised zone of lead mineral deposits. The occurrence of this mineral in the Main Seam coal implies that the deposit was exposed to an oxidising environment at some stage, most likely after coalification.  相似文献

Plutonic zircons from the Cretaceous Separation Point Suite (SPS) were analysed by LA-ICPMS for U–Pb isotope ratios and trace element concentrations. Pooled 206Pb/238U ages range from 112 to 124 Ma. Cathodoluminescence imaging reveals minor inheritence and textural evidence of repeated dissolution and re-precipitation of zircon. Core and rim spot analyses, however, document zircon growth during extended periods of time (>2 myr). Protracted crystallisation histories for simple plutonic systems are inconsistent with generalised thermal constraints, which predict cooling below the solidus within <1 myr. Consequently, we conclude that the SPS granitoids sampled in this study were not emplaced rapidly but incrementally over extended time periods. Zircon Th/U and Zr/Hf ratios are positively correlated with crystallisation temperatures, consistent with crystallisation from evolving melts. However, highly variable trace element concentrations, along with temperature reversals are indicative of complex crystallisation histories involving continuous fractional crystallisation repeatedly punctuated by hotter, more mafic magma recharge. Normalised abundances of the redox-sensitive elements Eu and Ce in zircon vary systematically with degrees of whole rock differentiation, pointing to evolutionary trends in magmatic oxidation states coupled with feldspar crystallisation.  相似文献

Secondary minerals formed in tailings derived from a W-rich deposit were investigated in detail using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The study focused on secondary minerals that formed in the vicinity of oxidized sphalerite [ZnS] and tennantite [Cu10(Fe,Zn)2As4S13] grains. Samples for TEM analysis were prepared directly from petrographic thin sections using a focused ion beam instrument. This method insured that spatial relationships among primary grains, secondary minerals and the pore spaces were maintained. The results from this study indicate that the secondary coatings associated with sphalerite and tennantite are composed of several discrete phases. The phases identified in this study include an Fe–Zn–As–O phase, secondary sulfides, native Cu, an Fe–Si–O phase, an In–O phase, and wulfenite [PbMoO4]. The Fe–Zn–As–O phase precipitates directly from the pore water and the nearby primary mineral grains act as a source for some of the elements (e.g., Zn from sphalerite, As from tennantite). Secondary Cu sulfides were found at the outer margins of sphalerite and roquesite [CuInS2] grains. It is likely that these Cu sulfides form as a result of interactions between the primary grain and aqueous Cu(II) present in the pore water, similar to what occurs in supergene environments. A secondary sulfide that was composed of variable amounts of Cu, Zn, As, Fe and S was also identified along the outer margins of tennantite. Native Cu was found in association with chalcopyrite [CuFeS2] inclusions that were present in one of the sphalerite grains and probably represents a low-temperature secondary phase. The oxidation of chalcopyrite in the presence of aqueous Si leads to the formation of a nanocrystalline or amorphous Fe–Si–O phase. Roquesite oxidation leads to the formation of a crystalline In–O phase, which is likely dzhalindite [In(OH)3]. Wulfenite was found in the interstitial voids present in the Fe–Zn–As–O phase suggesting that it forms by direct precipitation from the local pore water. The results from this study indicate that secondary coatings consist of complex secondary phases that may only be distinguished at the nanoscale. The TEM investigations reveal details regarding mineralogical sinks and sources for aqueous components that may otherwise be overlooked.  相似文献

Summary. A conducting slab of finite thickness divided into three segments of different conductivities and overlying a perfect conductor is proposed as a suitable two-dimensional 'control' model for testing the accuracy of the various numerical modelling programs that are available for calculating the fields induced in the Earth by an external, time-varying magnetic source. An analytic solution is obtained for this control model for the case of the magnetic field everywhere parallel to the conductivity boundaries ( B -polarization). Values of the field given by this solution for a particular set of model parameters are calculated at selected points on the surface and on a horizontal plane inside the conductor, and are tabulated to three figure accuracy for reference. They are used to check the accuracy of the results given by the finite difference program of Brewitt-Taylor & Weaver and the finite element program of Kisak & Silvester for the same model. Improved formulae for calculating the derived electric field components in B -polarization are first developed for incorporation in the finite difference program, and these give surface electric fields within 1 per cent of the analytic values, while all three field components inside the conductor are calculated to better than 96 per cent accuracy by the finite difference program. The results given by the finite element program are not quite so satisfactory. Errors somewhat greater than 10 per cent are present and although the program requires much less disk space it takes rather more CPU time to complete the calculations.  相似文献

Summary Recent climate change scenarios resulting from elevated trace gasses may alter environmental temperature and moisture. The ecological consequences, however, are uncertain requiring an understanding of how soil-plant systems will respond to different conditions. This study examines the temporal characteristics of soil water retention in a temperate grassland following natural and simulated summer showers. We have used weighting lysimeters located in grassland stands of 360 m2, 2.25 m2 and lone lysimeters measuring 0.07 m2. Water deposited from natural summer rainfall on these grasslands is likely to be lost in less than two days because 92% of the rainshowers are < 10 mm having residence times of less than two days. Showers > 10 mm did, however, consistently remain in the soil-plant system for periods longer than light showers. When the largest plots (360 m2) were wetted by small (< 3 mm) natural rainfall events covering a portion of the entire valley (30–70 km2), soil water depletion rates were not significantly different than if just the 360 m2 plots were wetted by irrigations of the same size. If anthopogenetic changes occur in the rainfall amounts of summer showers in the Northern Great Plains, our results support the contention that soil water retention and associated ecosystem processes may be significantly altered inAgropyron smithii (Rybd.) grasslands.With 1 Figure  相似文献

Summary. A new method for solving problems in three-dimensional electromagnetic induction in which the Earth is represented by a uniformly conducting half-space overlain by a surface layer of variable conductance is presented. Unlike previous treatments of this type of problem the method does not require the fields to be separated into their normal and anomalous parts, nor is it necessary to assume that the anomalous region is surrounded by a uniform structure; the model may approach either an E- or a B -polarization configuration at infinity. The solution is expressed as a vector integral equation in the horizontal electric field at the surface. The kernel of the integral is a Green's tensor which is expressed in terms of elementary functions that are independent of the conductance. The method is applied to an illustrative model representing an island near a bent coastline which extends to infinity in perpendicular directions.  相似文献

A great deal of interdisciplinary literature suggests that although the general motivation to vote is complex, it can be partially explained by a multitude of psychological and contextual factors, including local geographic patterns. I extend this observation to one particular type of voting behavior: sincere crossover voting, or voting for a candidate outside of one's own political affiliation, in a general election. Using a replicable methodological approach that incorporates partisan spatial segregation and exposure as predictors into statistical models of crossover voting behavior for a selected U.S. election, I produce evidence to suggest that the spatial arrangement of partisans influences crossover behavior in the study area, although not uniformly for members of the two major American political parties.  相似文献
