Interactions between cadmium and sulfhydryl-containing compounds in striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, were examined. Exposure to 10 mg Cd/liter for up to 6 weeks caused an increase in the acid-soluble thiol (AST) content of the liver. Although the AST concentration was elevated at 1·4 weeks, increases in the glutathione and cysteine contents were not observed until after 4 weeks of exposure. Homogenates of livers were fractionated on a Sephadex G-75 column. A homogenate of livers of mullet injected with 109Cd 2 days prior to sampling had an elution profile for thiols similar to controls. After 3 weeks exposure to 10 mg Cd/liter the 9400 MW thiol peak increased 3·6-fold and the peak with the same retention volume as glutathione increased 4·3-fold. Greater than 70% of the thiols in these two peaks were acid-soluble. In both experiments, almost all the cadmium was associated with the 9400 MW peak. The ratio in the 9400 MW peak declined from 14·1 (controls) to 3·2 after 3 weeks exposure. No cadmium was associated with glutathione in the bile.  相似文献

A previous assessment of radiocarbon (14C) dates from alluvial units in southeastern Australia revealed a gap in the geochronological record that coincides with the Holocene climatic optimum. This gap in the alluvial record can be further refined using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The chronology of Holocene river terraces on Widden Brook, a sandy alluvial stream in southeastern Australia, was established using 14C and OSL techniques. Combined use of these independent techniques allows for a more rigorous assessment of the alluvial record. The robust chronology, consisting of 38 14C and 11 OSL samples, permitted identification of significant depositional variation within the catchment, resulting from localised geomorphic processes. The three terrace sequences identified yielded distinct chronologies, suggesting alluvial deposition at different times. The sequences exhibited a continuous chronology, which indicated continuous deposition throughout the Holocene. The chronology of terrace sequences within this catchment suggests that terrace formation can be attributed to localised geomorphic processes rather than climatic forcing. Juniperus communities are found on over 50 × 106 ha in arid and semiarid habitats in southwestern North America. The drought tolerant sedge Carex planostachys occurs below the canopy in some of these communities. Cover and biomass of C. planostachys are high below the canopy and low in associated gaps. The purposes of this study were to investigate the temporal and spatial physiologic response of C. planostachys to abiotic changes, and determine it's light response characteristics from four contiguous microsites. Net photosynthesis was highest in spring when temperature was cooler and soil water higher, but low carbon uptake continued during summer drought. In addition, C. planostachys demonstrates a capacity to recover from extreme drought, despite water potential measured below ?9.0 MPa. Based on physiological light response curves and gas-exchange measurements, C. planostachys appears tolerant of shaded and full sun habitats. Light levels below the canopy were reduced compared to the gaps, but light saturation of C. planostachys did not change and net CO2 uptake was only reduced slightly. Carbon uptake was coupled to light levels and not soil moisture. Observed differences in physiological attributes and variation in C. planostachys cover and biomass correspond to the presence or absence of the canopy. Low light compensation points, coupled with reduced respiratory demand, maximize photosynthetic gain in low light microsites. C. planostachys appears to acclimate across a range of light regimes, suggesting photosynthetic plasticity, allowing growth and survival in diverse light microhabitats. C. planostachys, tolerant of drought, appears anisohydric and demonstrates a capacity to acclimate to sun and shaded habitats, which could allow it to occur across a wider range of arid areas.  相似文献

The oiling rate (oiled birds/total birds) has become the international standard to analyze beached bird survey data. However, this index may not reliably track long-term changes in marine oil pollution in regions where other activities that kill seabirds vulnerable to oil, such as hunting and gill-netting, are also changing. We compare the oiling rate from beached bird surveys conducted in southeastern Newfoundland between 1984 and 2006 to an alternative approach, namely trends derived from a model examining the linear density of oiled birds (birds/km). In winter, there was no change in the oiling rate since 1984, while in summer oiling rates significantly increased. In contrast, the number of oiled birds/km showed a significant decline in both winter and summer. The discrepancy in these trends was attributed to steep declines in the number of unoiled birds found in both seasons. In winter, the decline in unoiled birds/km was related to a reduction in the legal murre hunt and less onshore winds, while in summer a reduced cod fishery resulting in fewer murres drowning in nets and warming summers may have lead to the decline. The significant declines in oiled birds/km over the past three decades are hopefully an indication of less oil being present in the marine environment. Although oiled bird densities since 2000 have remained relatively low for the region (winter: 0.58 birds/km, summer: 0.27 birds/km), they still exceed densities reported elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

A 5-year-old wood particle reactor treating agricultural tile drainage in southern Ontario was monitored for its ongoing ability to treat both nitrate (NO3) and perchlorate (ClO4). Prior to sampling undertaken in the fifth year of operation, a highway safety flare containing ClO4 was immersed in the inlet pipe elevating influent ClO4 concentrations to up to 33.7 μg/L. ClO4 removal rates were inhibited in the presence of more than 1 to 2 mg/L NO3-N, but increased rapidly to about 60 μg/L/d upon NO3 depletion. Nitrate removal rates, measured subsequently in the sixth and seventh years of operation, varied with temperature in the range of 2 to 16 mg N/L/d, but remained similar to rates measured in the second year. Additionally, no deterioration in the hydraulic conductivity (K) of the coarse core layer (0.5 3 removal rates and can remain highly permeable over a number of years. The media can also provide high removal rates for other redox sensitive contaminants such as ClO4. The ability to directly measure the reactor flow rate, in this case via an outlet pipe, greatly simplified the task of estimating hydraulic properties and reaction rates.  相似文献

Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellates, Karenia spp. occur nearly annually in the eastern Gulf of Mexico with cell abundances typically >105 cells L−1. Thermal and ocean color satellite imagery shows sea surface temperature patterns indicative of upwelling events and the concentration of chlorophyll at fronts along the west Florida continental shelf. Daily cell counts of Karenia show greater increases in cell concentrations at fronts than can be explained by Karenia's maximum specific growth rate. This is observed in satellite images as up to a 10-fold greater increase in chlorophyll biomass over 1–2 d periods than can be explained by in situ growth. In this study, we propose a model that explains why surface blooms of Karenia may develop even when nutrients on the west Florida shelf are low. In the summer, northward winds produce a net flow east and southeast bringing water and nutrients from the Mississippi River plume onto the west Florida shelf at depths of 20–50 m. This water mass supplies utilizable inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen that promote the growth of Karenia to pre-bloom concentrations in sub-surface waters in the mid-shelf region. In the fall, a change to upwelling favorable winds produces onshore transport. This transport, coupled with the swimming behavior of Karenia, leads to physical accumulation at frontal regions near the coast, resulting in fall blooms. Strong thermal fronts during the winter provide a mechanism for re-intensification of the blooms, if Karenia cells are located north of the fronts. This conceptual model leads to testable hypotheses on bloom development throughout the Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Applications of ergodic reasoning (or location for time substitution) aid efforts at environmental reconstruction and prediction, providing a useful tool to analyse and communicate stages of landscape evolution. Analysis of the historical range of behaviour and change that a river system has experienced can be used to interpret thresholds that have been breached, and underlying controls and/or triggers for adjustment and change. This information can be used to forecast future trajectories of adjustment and provide target conditions for management activities. This paper uses a case study from upper Wollombi Brook, New South Wales, Australia to demonstrate how ergodic reasoning can be used to assess river behaviour, change and responses to natural and human‐disturbances. The ‘river evolution diagram’ developed by Brierley and Fryirs (Geomorphology and River Management: Applications of the River Styles Framework. Blackwell Publishing: Oxford, 2005) is presented as a means for depicting the range of behaviour and evolutionary variability of this river. These approaches can be readily applied in other systems. Programs for evaluating proposed discharges of dredged material into waters of the United States specify a tiered testing and evaluation protocol that includes performance of acute and chronic bioassays to assess toxicity of the dredged sediments. Although these evaluations reflect the toxicological risks associated with disposal activities to some degree, analysis activities are limited to the sediments of each dredging project separately. Cumulative risks to water column and benthic organisms at and near the designated disposal site are therefore difficult to assess. An alternate approach is to focus attention on the disposal site, with the goal of understanding more directly the risks of multiple disposal events to receiving ecosystems. Here we review current US toxicity testing and evaluation protocols, and describe an application of ecological risk assessment that allows consideration of the temporal and spatial components of risk to receiving aquatic ecosystems. When expanded to include other disposal options, this approach can provide the basis for holistic management of dredged material disposal.  相似文献

Aerosol chemical composition and trace gas measurements were made at twolocations on the northeastern peninsula of Tenerife during the ACE-2HILLCLOUD experiment, between 28 June and 23 July 1997. Measurementswere made of coarse (#gt;2.5 m aerodynamic diameter) and fine (#lt; 2.5m) aerosol Cl, NO3 ,SO4 2–, non-sea saltSO4 2– (NSSS),CH3SO3 (MSA) andNH4 +, and gas phase dimethylsulphide (DMS), HCl,HNO3, SO2, CH3COOH, HCOOH andNH3. Size distributions were measured using a cascadeimpactor. Results show that in marine air masses NSSS and MSA wereformed via DMS oxidation, with additional NSSS present in air massescontaining a continental component. Using a Eulerian box model approachfor aerosols transported between upwind and downwind sites, a mean NSSSproduction rate of 4.36 × 10–4 gm–3 s–1 was calculated for daytimeclear sky periods (highest insolation), with values for cloudy periodsduring daytime and nighttime of 3.55 × 10–4 and2.40 × 10–4 g m–3s–1, respectively. The corresponding rates for MSA were6.23 × 10–6, 8.49 × 10–6and 6.95 × 10–6 g m–3s–1, respectively. Molar concentration ratios forMSA/NSSS were 8.7% (1.8–18.2%) and 1.9%(1.3–3.5%) in clean and polluted air masses, respectively.Reactions occurring within clouds appeared to have a greater influenceon rates of MSA production, than of NSSS, while conversely daytime gasphase reactions were more important for NSSS. For MSA, nighttimein-cloud oxidation rates exceeded rates of daytime gas phase productionvia OH oxidation of DMS. NSSS, MSA and ammonium had trimodal sizedistributions, with modes at 0.3, 4.0 and >10.0 m (NSSS andNH4 +), and 0.3, 1.5 and 4.0 m (MSA). Nosignificant production of other aerosol species was observed, with theexception of ammonium, which was formed at variable rates dependent onneutralisation of the aerosol with ammonia released from spatiallynon-uniform surface sources. Seasalt components were mainly present incoarse particles, although sub-micrometre chloride was also measured.Losses by deposition exceeded calculated expectations for all species,and were highest for the seasalt fraction and nitrate.  相似文献
