Ocean surface currents can be estimated, over a large coastal area, by utilizing the backscatter of high frequency (HF) radar waves from ocean gravity waves. Although the overall backscatter mechanism is complicated, the surface current information is contained within the spectral characteristics of two dominant Bragg components. The accuracy of the current estimate, following the usual FFT-based spectral estimate, is limited by the frequency resolution of the FFT and the time-varying characteristics of the Bragg components. This paper describes a high resolution parametric estimation of the ocean currents based on a recently proposed technique for analyzing time-varying signals. This technique, together with a time-domain ocean clutter model, allows all the Bragg signal information to be extracted from the two dominant eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix constructed from the radar data. Using signals from an operational coastal surveillance radar, current estimates made using this technique are compared with those estimated by the conventional FFT-based method  相似文献

A joint airborne measurement program is being pursued by NRL and NASA Wallops Flight Center to determine the extent to which wind speed and sea surface significant wave height (SWH) can be measured quantitatively and remotely with a short pulse (2 ns), wide-beam (60deg), nadir-looking 3-cm radar. The concept involves relative power measurements only and does not need a scanning antenna, doppler filters, or absolute power calibration. The slopes of the leading and trailing edges of the averaged received power for the pulse limited altimeter are used to infer SWH and surface wind speed. The interpretation is based on theoretical models of the effects of SWH on the leading edge shape and rms sea-surface slope on the trailing-edge shape. The models include the radar system parameters of antenna beam width and pulsewidth. Preliminary experimental results look promising and indicate that it may be possible to design a relatively compact airborne radar to infer, in real-time, the sea surface SWH and surface wind speed.  相似文献

Summary A hydro-thermodynamic soil-vegetation model including soil freezing/thawing (soil-frost) and snow-metamorphism has been integrated into the PennState/NCAR Mesoscale Meteorological Model MM5 in a two-way coupled mode. A hierarchy of simulations with and without the soil-frost module, each combined with and without the snow module, shows the influence of snow-cover and soil-frost on weather in Alaska. Herein the landscape is featured as it is typically by mesoscale models.Theoretical considerations suggest that organic soil types should be considered in mesoscale modeling because of their different thermal and hydrological behavior as compared to mineral soils. The Ludwig-Soret and Dufour effects are small, but increase appreciably during freezing/thawing and snow-melt.The snow and soil-frost processes have a demonstrable impact on the surface thermal and hydrological regimes and on the near-surface atmospheric conditions even on the short (synoptic) timescales. The presence of snow-cover results in a highly stable stratification. In cloud-free areas, the enhanced loss of radiant energy and cooling of the air over snow-cover lead to a positive feedback to relatively colder, drier conditions. In cloudy areas, a positive feedback to warmer, moister conditions develops over snow-cover. As the changes in atmospheric humidity and temperature caused by snow-cover propagate into the pressure field, sea level pressure is lower by more than 1hPa in the simulations with snow-cover. Although the effect of soil-frost alone is an order of magnitude smaller, the soil-frost snow system leads to an increase of the pressure difference to 1.2hPa. The changes in the pressure field alter wind speed and direction slightly.Soil-frost results in soil temperature differences of 2–5K in the upper soil layers, while snow results in differences of 3–10K. Soil-frost has a notably greater impact in cloud-free than cloudy areas. When a snow-cover is present, frozen soil enhances the insulating effect of a snow-cover in cloudy areas, but reduces it in cloud-free areas. In cloudy areas, soil-frost without snow-cover leads to cooler, drier atmospheric conditions relative to no frost. In cloudy areas, soil-frost under a snow-cover reduces the water supply to the atmosphere as compared to snow-covered conditions without soil-frost. The combined effects of soil-frost and snow increase precipitation locally by as much as 12.2mm/ 48h. If mesoscale modeling does not consider the soil-frost snow system, predicted water vapor fluxes will be too high in cloud-free areas, and too low in cloudy areas.  相似文献

After the 1997 financial crisis, many retrenched workers preferred not to return to provincial homes but remained in Bangkok to establish informal retail businesses in branded and other consumer products. In contrast to traditional street vendors, who specialized in food items primarily catering for low‐income customers, and focused on high volume, these ‘new generation’ street vendors also adopted more formal business practices. Given their greater sophistication and better education, we hypothesized that they would be more organized advocates of vendors' rights and thus more prone to conflicts with municipal authorities. Based on interviews, however, we found that new generation vendors are adaptive to location and business strategy, and prefer a low profile in dealing with officialdom. By contrast, traditional vendors remained more tied to particular spaces, are more likely to stand up for their rights to use public space and, because they expect more from government, are more prone to conflicts with municipal authorities. Our findings relate to ongoing discussion on the rights and needs of street vendors to access urban public space and the responsibilities of authorities to meet and provide for these informal sector livelihoods that make up a significant share of the national economy in Thailand, as elsewhere in the global South.  相似文献

In 1994, a directed fishing moratorium was declared for Grand Bank American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides) and yellowtail flounder (Limanda ferruginea) stocks because both stocks showed severe declines in abundance from heavy exploitation during the mid 1980s and early 1990s. Four years later, the fishery for yellowtail re-opened while the plaice stock has shown little recovery and the moratorium is still in effect. To assess the possible causes of the differences in recovery between species, we examined the spatial structure and environmental characteristics of the continental shelf nursery habitats of plaice and yellowtail, and their relationship to recruitment variability and overall population size. Depth plays a major influential role determining the spatial pattern and the abundance of juveniles of both species and in the case of plaice the spatial structure of the adult population also determines the amount of nursery area utilised by juveniles. Recruitment variability was higher in plaice than in yellowtail. We found year class synchrony in both species indicating that common environmental conditions and/or biological processes are affecting recruitment in a similar manner. Density-dependent regulation appears to be more severe in yellowtail and this should contribute to a more stable population when compared to plaice. These results are discussed in terms of resiliency of both stocks to over-exploitation.  相似文献
