We study predictions for dark matter (DM) phase-space structure near the Sun based on high-resolution simulations of six galaxy haloes taken from the Aquarius project. The local DM density distribution is predicted to be remarkably smooth; the density at the Sun differs from the mean over a best-fitting ellipsoidal equidensity contour by less than 15 per cent at the 99.9 per cent confidence level. The local velocity distribution is also very smooth, but it differs systematically from a (multivariate) Gaussian distribution. This is not due to the presence of individual clumps or streams, but to broad features in the velocity modulus and energy distributions that are stable in both space and time and reflect the detailed assembly history of each halo. These features have a significant impact on the signals predicted for weakly interacting massive particle and axion searches. For example, weakly interacting massive particles recoil rates can deviate by ∼10 per cent from those expected from the best-fitting multivariate Gaussian models. The axion spectra in our simulations typically peak at lower frequencies than in the case of multivariate Gaussian velocity distributions. Also in this case, the spectra show significant imprints of the formation of the halo. This implies that once direct DM detection has become routine, features in the detector signal will allow us to study the DM assembly history of the Milky Way. A new field, 'DM astronomy', will then emerge.  相似文献

We have constructed the first all-sky cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization lensed maps based on a high-resolution cosmological N -body simulation, the Millennium Simulation (MS). We have exploited the lensing potential map obtained using a previously developed map-making procedure which integrates along the line-of-sight the MS dark matter distribution by stacking and randomizing the simulation boxes up to   z = 127  , and which semi-analytically supplies the large-scale power in the angular lensing potential that is not correctly sampled by the N -body simulation. The lensed sky has been obtained by properly modifying the latest version of the LensPix code to account for the MS structures. We have also produced all-sky lensed maps of the so-called  ψ E   and  ψ B   potentials, which are directly related to the electric and magnetic types of polarization. The angular power spectra of the simulated lensed temperature and polarization maps agree well with semi-analytic estimates up to   l ≤ 2500  , while on smaller scales we find a slight excess of power which we interpret as being due to non-linear clustering in the MS. We also observe how non-linear lensing power in the polarized CMB is transferred to large angular scales by suitably misaligned modes in the CMB and the lensing potential. This work is relevant in view of the future CMB probes, as a way to analyse the lensed sky and disentangle the contribution from primordial gravitational waves.  相似文献

In this study, we show that time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to detect organic biomarkers, such as hopanes and steranes, in non-fractionated crude oils, without extraction and chemical preparation. Hopanes and steranes may provide valuable information on the history of life on early Earth, particularly if they are present in fluid inclusions in ancient rocks. Due to the presence of different generations of inclusions in even very small rock samples, it would be advantageous to find a method capable of detecting biomarkers in single oil rich fluid inclusions. The capability of ToF-SIMS for detailed chemical analysis of very small sample amounts makes it a potential technique for such analysis, and in this work this possibility is explored. The presence of hopanes and steranes in four different crude oils of different ages and stages of biodegradation was investigated using ToF-SIMS and GC–MS. By combining analyses of biomarker standards, crude oils and chromatographic oil fractions, specific peaks for the different biomarkers were identified in the ToF-SIMS spectra. The presence of these peaks in the spectra from the crude oil samples could be attributed to the biomarkers based on exact mass determination and by comparison with the spectra from the biomarker containing and biomarker lacking fractions, respectively. In addition, the results show that a significant biomarker signal may be obtained from a 10 μm2 oil sample, demonstrating the potential of ToF-SIMS for analysis of single oil bearing fluid inclusions, which in turn may contribute to a better understanding of the early history of life on Earth.  相似文献

Deposition of quartz–molybdenite–pyrite–topaz–muscovite–fluorite and subsequent hübnerite and sulfide–fluorite–rhodochrosite mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine occurred coeval with the final stage of magmatic activity and ore formation at the nearby world-class Climax molybdenum deposit about 26 to 25 m.y. ago. The mineralization occurred at depths of about 3,000 m and is related to at least two major fluid systems: (1) one dominated by magmatic fluids, and (2) another dominated by meteoric water. The sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite, strontium isotopes and REY distribution in fluorite suggest that the early-stage quartz–molybdenite–pyrite–topaz–muscovite–fluorite mineral assemblage was deposited from magmatic fluids under a fluctuating pressure regime at temperatures of about 400°C as indicated by CO2-bearing, moderately saline (7.5–12.5 wt.% NaCl equiv.) fluid inclusions. LA-ICPMS analyses of fluid inclusions in quartz demonstrate that fluids from the Sweet Home Mine are enriched in incompatible elements but have considerably lower metal contents than those reported from porphyry–Cu–Au–Mo or Climax-type deposits. The ore-forming fluid exsolved from a highly differentiated magma possibly related to the deep-seated Alma Batholith or distal porphyry stock(s). Sulfide mineralization, marking the periphery of Climax-type porphyry systems, with fluorite and rhodochrosite as gangue minerals was deposited under a hydrostatic pressure regime from low-salinity ± CO2-bearing fluids with low metal content at temperatures below 400°C. The sulfide mineralization is characterized by mostly negative δ34S values for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and tetrahedrite, highly variable δ18O values for rhodochrosite, and low REE contents in fluorite. The Pb isotopic composition of galena as well as the highly variable 87Sr/86Sr ratios of fluorite, rhodochrosite, and apatite indicates that at least part of the Pb and Sr originated from a much more radiogenic source than Climax-type granites. It is suggested that the sulfide mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine formed from magmatic fluids that mixed with variable amounts of externally derived fluids. The migration of the latter fluids, that were major components during late-stage mineralization at the Sweet Home Mine, was probably driven by a buried magmatic intrusion.  相似文献

Asphaltenes extracted from crude oils are proposed to possess structural features of the related source rock kerogen. For the present study micro-scale sealed vessel pyrolysis (MSSV) and combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC–C–IRMS) were used to compare gas generation from a whole rock (type II-S kerogen) from southern Italy with that from related sulfur rich asphaltenes isolated from a low maturity heavy crude oil. The purpose of was to determine whether experimental pyrolysis of oil asphaltenes can be used to predict the timing and the chemical and isotopic composition of hydrocarbon gases generated from genetically related kerogen in the source rock during burial maturation. The results show that parameters such as (gas to oil ratio) GOR and oil and gas formation timing are very similar for these two sample types, whereas gas composition, product aromaticity and sulfur content are remarkably different. Slight differences in GOR are mainly due to differences in gas formation characteristics at very high levels of thermal alteration. Secondary gas formation from the whole rock covers a much broader temperature range under geological conditions than that from the asphaltene products. However, it is remarkable that both the onset and the maximum temperature are nearly identical under geological conditions. The observed differences in gas generation characteristics are supported by discrepancies in the carbon isotopic characteristics of the gas range compounds and indicate different precursors and/or mechanisms for gas generated from whole rock and asphaltenes.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a GIS-based multicriteria flood risk assessment and mapping approach. This approach includes flood risks which are not measured in monetary terms; it shows the spatial distribution of multiple risks, and it is able to deal with uncertainties in criteria values and to show their influence on the overall flood risk assessment. Additionally, the approach can be used to show the spatial allocation of the flood effects if risk reduction measures are implemented. The approach is applied to a pilot study for the River Mulde in Saxony, Germany, heavily affected by the hazardous flood in 2002. Therefore, a GIS database of economic, social and environmental risk criteria was created. Two different multicriteria decision rules, a disjunctive and an additive weighting approach, are utilised for an overall flood risk assessment in the area. For implementation, a software tool (FloodCalc) was developed supporting both, the risk calculation of the single criteria as well as the multicriteria analysis.

An integrated sulfur isotope model for Namibian shelf sediments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this study the sulfur cycle in the organic-rich mud belt underlying the highly productive upwelling waters of the Namibian shelf is quantified using a 1D reaction-transport model. The model calculates vertical concentration and reaction rate profiles in the top 500 cm of sediment which are compared to a comprehensive dataset which includes carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and iron compounds as well as sulfate reduction (SR) rates and stable sulfur isotopes (32S, 34S). The sulfur dynamics in the well-mixed surface sediments are strongly influenced by the activity of the large sulfur bacteria Thiomargaritanamibiensis which oxidize sulfide (H2S) to sulfate () using sea water nitrate () as the terminal electron acceptor. Microbial sulfide oxidation (SOx) is highly efficient, and the model predicts intense cycling between and H2S driven by coupled SR and SOx at rates exceeding 6.0 mol S m−2 y−1. More than 96% of the SR is supported by SOx, and only 2-3% of the pool diffuses directly into the sediment from the sea water. A fraction of the produced by Thiomargarita is drawn down deeper into the sediment where it is used to oxidize methane anaerobically, thus preventing high methane concentrations close to the sediment surface. Only a small fraction of total H2S production is trapped as sedimentary sulfide, mainly pyrite (FeS2) and organic sulfur (Sorg) (∼0.3 wt.%), with a sulfur burial efficiency which is amongst the lowest values reported for marine sediments (<1%). Yet, despite intense SR, FeS2 and Sorg show an isotope composition of ∼5 ‰ at 500 cm depth. These heavy values were simulated by assuming that a fraction of the solid phase sulfur exchanges isotopes with the dissolved sulfide pool. An enrichment in H2S of 34S towards the sediment-water interface suggests that Thiomargarita preferentially remove H232S from the pore water. A fractionation of 20-30‰ was estimated for SOx (εSOx) with the model, along with a maximum fractionation for SR (εSR-max) of 100‰. These values are far higher than previous laboratory-based estimates for these processes. Mass balance calculations indicate negligible disproportionation of autochthonous elemental sulfur; an explanation routinely cited in the literature to account for the large fractionations in SR. Instead, the model indicates that repeated multi-stepped sulfide oxidation and intracellular disproportionation by Thiomargarita could, in principle, allow the measured isotope data to be simulated using much lower fractionations for εSOx (5‰) and εSR (78‰).  相似文献

The Lagrangian scheme ATTILA is used to calculate age spectra and the mean age of air in the general circulation model ECHAM4. The advantage of the Lagrangian method is that temporal variation in transport is taken into account and that beyond transport times the actual transport pathways can be investigated. We found a strong seasonal cycle in mean age and age spectra, especially at high latitudes. When plotting polar age spectra against time, it can clearly be seen that the edge of the polar vortex acts as an efficient transport barrier and that exchange with extra-polar air takes place only for a short period of approximately two months after the polar vortex has broken down. Compared to observations the mean age is reproduced satisfactorily below approximately 20 km. Above that level however, the mean age is underestimated, especially at high latitudes. Furthermore, the observed sharp meridional gradient is located too far polewards in the model, which indicates that the subtropical transport barrier is too weak. There is a distinct variation in the shape of the age spectra with latitude. At low latitudes the age spectra consist of one single peak, whereas at higher latitudes secondary peaks appear, which are one year apart and whose positions in the spectrum are independent of the location. At polar latitudes there are even several peaks of approximately equal size. We explain these peaks with two superposing processes. First, the seasonal cycle of the upward mass flux at the tropical tropopause produces a single peak age distribution. And second, at polar latitudes, the temporal evolution of the polar vortex allows mixing of polar and subtropical air only once a year, which results in a superposition of these single peak age distributions. A final investigation of the transport pathways gave indications for predominant routes from the tropics to high latitudes resulting in altitude dependent meridional transport, however, more detailed studies of 3D trajectory data will be needed to clarify this issue.  相似文献

The metamorphic Raspas Complex of southwest Ecuador consists of high-pressure mafic, ultramafic, and sedimentary rocks. The Lu–Hf ages of a blueschist, a metapelite, and an eclogite overlap at around 130 Ma and date high-pressure garnet growth. Peak metamorphic conditions in the eclogites reached 1.8 GPa at 600°C, corresponding to a maximum burial depth of ~60 km. The geochemical signatures of the eclogites suggest that their protoliths were typical mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), whereas the blueschists exhibit seamount-like characteristics, and the eclogite-facies peridotites seem to represent depleted, MORB-source mantle. That these rocks were subjected to similar peak PT conditions contemporaneously suggests that they were subducted together as an essentially complete section within the slab. We suggest that this section became dismembered from the slab during burial at great depth—perhaps as a consequence of scraping off the seamounts. The spatially close association of MORB-type eclogite, seamount-type blueschist, serpentinized peridotite, and metasediments points to an exhumed high-pressure ophiolite sequence.  相似文献

In the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, we study the properties of voids and of fainter galaxies within voids that are defined by brighter galaxies. Our results are compared with simulated galaxy catalogues from the Millennium simulation coupled with a semi-analytical galaxy formation recipe. We derive the void size distribution and discuss its dependence on the faint magnitude limit of the galaxies defining the voids. While voids among faint galaxies are typically smaller than those among bright galaxies, the ratio of the void sizes to the mean galaxy separation reaches larger values. This is well reproduced in the mock galaxy samples studied. We provide analytic fitting functions for the void size distribution. Furthermore, we study the galaxy population inside voids defined by galaxies with   B J− 5 log  h < −20  and diameter larger than  10  h −1 Mpc  . We find a clear bimodality of galaxies inside voids and in the average field but with different characteristics. The abundance of blue cloud galaxies inside voids is enhanced. There is an indication of a slight blueshift of the blue cloud. Furthermore, galaxies in void centres have slightly higher specific star formation rates as measured by the η parameter. We determine the radial distribution of the ratio of early- and late-type galaxies through the voids. We find and discuss some differences between observations and the Millennium catalogues.  相似文献
