Several pieces of studies on the January 26, 2001, Bhuj earthquake (Mw 7.6) revealed that the mainshock was triggered on the hidden unmapped fault in the western part of Indian stable continental region that caused a huge loss in the entire Kachchh rift basin of Gujarat, India. Occurrences of infrequent earthquakes of Mw 7.6 due to existence of hidden and unmapped faults on the surface have become one of the key issues for geoscientific research, which need to be addressed for evolving plausible earthquake hazard mitigation model. In this study, we have carried out a detailed autopsy of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake source zone by applying three-dimensional (3-D) local earthquake tomography (LET) method to a completely new data set consisting of 576 local earthquakes recorded between November 2006 and April 2009 by a seismic network consisting of 22 numbers of three-component broadband digital seismograph stations. In the present study, a total of 7560 arrival times of P-wave (3820) and S-wave (3740) recorded at least 4 seismograph stations were inverted to assimilate 3-D P-wave velocity (Vp), S-wave velocity (Vs), and Poisson’s ratio (σ) structures beneath the 2001 Bhuj earthquake source zone for reliable interpretation of the imaged anomalies and its bearing on earthquake hazard of the region. The source zone is located near the triple junction formed by juxtapositions of three Indian, Arabian, and Iranian tectonic plates that might have facilitated the process of brittle failure at a depth of 25 km beneath the KRB, Gujarat, which caused a gigantic loss to both property and persons of the region. There may be several hidden seismogenic faults around the epicentral zone of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in the area, which are detectable using 3-D tomography to minimize earthquake hazard for a region. We infer that the use of detailed 3-D seismic tomography may offer potential information on hidden and unmapped faults beneath the plate interior to unravel the genesis of such big damaging earthquakes. This study may help in evolving a comprehensive earthquake risk mitigation model for regions of analogous geotectonic settings, elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The Andaman–Nicobar (A–N) Islands region has attracted many geo-scientists because of its unique location and complex geotectonic settings. The recent occurrence of tsunamis due to the megathrust tsunamigenic north Sumatra earthquake (Mw 9.3) with a series of aftershocks in the A–N region caused severe damage to the coastal regions of India and Indonesia. Several pieces of evidence suggest that the occurrence of earthquakes in the A–N region is related to its complex geodynamical processes. In this study, it has been inferred that deep-seated structural heterogeneities related to dehydration of the subducting Indian plate beneath the Island could have induced the process of brittle failure through crustal weakening to contribute immensely to the coastal hazard in the region. The present study based on 3-D P-wave tomography of the entire rupture zone of the A–N region using the aftershocks of the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake (Mw 9.3) clearly demonstrates the role of crustal heterogeneity in seismogenesis and in causing the strong shakings and tsunamis. The nature and extent of the imaged crustal heterogeneity beneath the A–N region may have facilitated the degree of damage and extent of coastal hazards in the region. The 3-D velocity heterogeneities reflect asperities that manifest what type of seismogenic layers exist beneath the region to dictate the size of earthquakes and thereby they help to assess the extent of earthquake vulnerability in the coastal regions. The inference of this study may be used as one of the potential inputs for assessment of seismic vulnerability to the region, which may be considered for evolving earthquake hazard mitigation model for the coastal areas of the Andaman–Nicobar Islands region.  相似文献

Self-similar flows of a perfect gas behind a cylindrical blast wave with radiation heat flux in the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field have been investigated. The effects of radiation flux and magnetic field together on the other flow variables have been studied in the region of interest. The magnetic field and density distribution vary as an inverse power of radial distance from the axis of symmetry. The electrical conductivity of the gas is taken to be infinite. The total energy of the flow between the inner expanding surface and the shock is assumed to be constant. This study discusses the scaling properties of the spatial distribution of the December 26, 2004, Sumatra aftershocks. We estimate the spatial correlation dimension D 2 of the epicentral distribution of aftershocks recorded by a local network operated by Geological Survey of India. We estimate the value of D 2 for five blocks in the source area by using generalized correlation integral approach. We assess its bias due to finite data points, scaling range, effects of location errors, and boundary effects theoretically and apply it to real data sets. The correlation dimension was computed both for real as well as synthetic data sets that include randomly generated point sets obtained using uniform distributions and mimicking the number of events and outlines of the effective areas filled with epicenters. On comparing the results from the real data and random point sets from simulations, we found the lower limit of bias in D 2 estimates from limited data sets to be 0.26. Thus, the spatial variation in correlation dimensions among different blocks using local data sets cannot be directly compared unless the influence of bias in the real aftershock data set is taken into account. They cannot also be used to infer the geometry of the faults. We also discuss the results in order to add constraints on the use of synthetic data and of different approaches for uncertainty analysis on spatial variation of D 2. A difference in D 2 values, rather than their absolute values, among small blocks is of interest to local data sets, which are correlated with their seismic b values. Taking into account the possible errors and biases, the average D 2 values vary from 1.05 to 1.57 in the Andaman–Nicobar region. The relative change in D 2 values can be interpreted in terms of clustering and diffuse seismic activity associated with the low and high D 2 values, respectively. Overall, a relatively high D 2 and low b value is consistent with high-magnitude, diffuse activity in space in the source region of the 2004 Sumatra earthquake.

Stability of a levee and its foundation soil during flood is governed by seepage forces. In this study, the seepage forces in the flow domain have been determined using conformal mapping technique. Stability of foundation soil has been studied for a levee with and without cut-off wall on permeable soil of infinite depth. In situ effective normal and shear stresses due to self-weight, additional induced stresses due to levee structure and ponded water on upstream sloping face have been determined by assuming soil to be elastic. Besides, components of seepage stress acting at a point on two orthogonal planes, i.e., on vertical and horizontal planes, are considered and the Mohr’s circle is drawn. Mohr–Coulomb failure envelope is drawn for the foundation soil with known effective cohesion ( $c^{\prime}_{1}$ c 1 ′ ) and angle of internal friction ( $\varphi^{\prime}_{1}$ φ 1 ′ ), and then the stability of the foundation soil has been assessed. Probable zone of general shear failure considering seepage flow has been identified. Zones vulnerable to foundation failure for different width of levee and depth of cut-off wall have been computed. The hydraulic unstable zone in downstream side of the levee resembles a log spiral. The provision of cut-off wall restricts the progress of failure zone only in the downstream side; otherwise, the zone of failure will enter the foundation of the levee. The stability of the foundation soil of an existing ring levee along the rivers Ganga, Sone and Punpun, near Patna (India), has been evaluated.  相似文献

The slopes of western Lesser Himalaya (at Sangaldhan Block of Udhampur near Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir India) are being severely affected by tectonic and erosional activities. These activities result in deposit of a thick cover of rock fragments and overburden just above the hard rock. The thickness of overburden cover has directly affected the stability of slope in the study area, though the traditional stability estimation techniques, rock mass rating and slope mass rating, rate this area as moderately stable which does not represent the real stability condition. In this research work, the geotechnical and geophysical surveys have been carried out to reckon the slope stability conditions more accurately as compared to traditional slope stability estimation techniques. A new rating, new slope mass rating, is developed, which gives a better picture of the stability of slopes. It incorporates a new parameter of overburden thickness profile, along with slope angle and other associated factors on the slopes of the mountainous terrains. The vertical electrical sounding surveys were conducted for the demarcation of rock–overburden interface and for determining the overburden cover. This new classification depicts an increase of 12.84 % in unstable slope areas giving a better assessment and factual picture of slope stability in our study area. This study also enumerates the importance of geophysical applications in slope stability studies. The research work is applicable in mountainous terrains such as Himalaya, and the major component of the application is the orientation of overburden or the profile of thickness in relation with slope of surface.  相似文献

Ion–acoustic double layers has been studied in magnetized electron-positron-ion plasma. The modified Korteweg-de Vries (m-KdV) is derived using reductive perturbation method. It is found that for the selected set of parameters, the system supports rarefactive (compressive) double layers depending upon the values of cold electron concentration (μ). It is also found that the magnetization affects only the width of the double layer. For a given set of parameter values, as we increases the magnetization, the width of the double layer increases and an increases in the obliqueness θ, where θ is the angle between wave vector and magnetic field, the width of the double layer also increases. The angle of obliqueness θ does not affects the amplitude of the double layer. It is also investigated that for the given set of parameter values, on increasing the positron concentration the amplitude of the rarefactive (compressive) double layer decreases (increases), and the width of the rarefactive (compressive) double layer increases (decreases). The effect of the temperature ratios of ions and positron on the amplitude and width of the double layers are discussed.  相似文献

The present paper discusses the impact of topography on accuracy for land cover classification and “from-to class change using improved spectral change vector analysis suggested by Chen et al. (2003). Two AWiFS sensor images of different dates are used. Double Window Flexible Pace Search (DFPS) is used to estimate threshold of change magnitude for change/no change classes. The topographic corrections show accuracy of 90% (Kappa coefficient 0.7811) for change/no change area as compared to 82% (Kappa coefficient 0.6512) in uncorrected satellite data. Direction cosines of change vector for determining change direction in n-dimensional spectral space is used for image classification with a minimum distance categorizing technique. The results of change detection are compared (i) Improved CVA with conventional two bands CVA and (ii) Improved CVA before and after topographic corrections. The improved CVA with topographic correction consideration using slope match show maximum accuracy of 90% (Kappa coefficient 0.83) as compared to conventional CVA which show maximum accuracy of 82% (Kappa coefficient 0.6624). The overall accuracy of ”from- to class using improved CVA increases from 86% (Kappa coefficient 0.7817) to 90% (Kappa coefficient 0.83) after topographic corrections. The improved CVA with proper topographic corrections is found to be effective for change detection analysis in the rugged Western Himalayan terrain.  相似文献

The present study aims to estimate the long term changes in sea ice areal extent (SIAE) around Antarctica using Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) satellite data (1988–2011). Daily, weekly and monthly brightness temperature (TB) maps of Antarctica have been generated. Temporal variation in monthly averaged TB values of sea ice have been analyzed and an increasing trend is observed in TB. Sea ice concentration (SIC) values are estimated and the concentration class 0.85–0.95 is observed as the main contributor in sea ice areal extent during the Antarctic peak winter month i.e. September and October. SIC changes rapidly from October onwards and shows fast melting of sea ice, however, from April start of freezing has been observed. Continuous increase in SIAE is observed from February to September in all the analyzed years (1988–2011) data. In this observation period maximum SIAE is observed in September 1989 and minimum in February 1993. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data is used for the validation of SIAE values. SSM/I and MODIS estimated SIAE values are compared (R2?=?0.98) and a relation between them is established by performing regression analysis. This relation is further used for the estimation of corrected SIAE values. The monthly average sea ice extent maps of last three decades have been analyzed and a shift in onset of freezing of sea ice has been observed. The period of frozen sea has also been observed as decreased.  相似文献

We applied a simple statistical downscaling procedure for transforming daily global climate model (GCM) rainfall to the scale of an agricultural experimental station in Katumani, Kenya. The transformation made was two-fold. First, we corrected the rainfall frequency bias of the climate model by truncating its daily rainfall cumulative distribution into the station’s distribution based on a prescribed observed wet-day threshold. Then, we corrected the climate model rainfall intensity bias by mapping its truncated rainfall distribution into the station’s truncated distribution. Further improvements were made to the bias corrected GCM rainfall by linking it with a stochastic disaggregation scheme to correct the time structure problem inherent with daily GCM rainfall. Results of the simple and hybridized GCM downscaled precipitation variables (total, probability of occurrence, intensity and dry spell length) were linked with a crop model for a more objective evaluation of their performance using a non-linear measure based on mutual information based on entropy. This study is useful for the identification of both suitable downscaling technique as well as the effective precipitation variables for forecasting crop yields using GCM’s outputs which can be useful for addressing food security problems beforehand in critical basins around the world.  相似文献
