Latitudinal movements of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), analogous to its present-day seasonal shifts, and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-type variability both potentially impacted rainfall changes at the millennial timescale during the last glacial period. In this study we compare tropical Pacific sedimentary records of paleoprecipitation to decipher which climate mechanism was responsible for the past rainfall changes. We find that latitudinal movements of the ITCZ are consistent with the observed rainfall patterns, challenging the ENSO hypothesis for explaining the rapid rainfall changes at low latitudes. The ITCZ-related mechanism appears to reflect large-scale atmospheric rearrangements over the tropical belt, with a pronounced Heinrich-Dansgaard/Oeschger signature. This observation is coherent with the simulated tropical rainfall anomalies induced by a weakening of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation in modeling experiments. 相似文献

The effect of solar flare, sudden commencement of magnetic storm and of the disturbances ring current on the equatorial electrojet in the Eastern Brazil region, where the ground magnetic declination is as large as \(20^{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) is studied based on geomagnetic data with one minute resolution from Bacabal during November–December 1990. It is shown that the mean diurnal vector of the horizontal field was aligned along \(2{^{\circ }}\hbox {E}\) of north at Huancayo and \(30{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) of north at Bacabal during the month of December 1990. Number of solar flares that occurred on 30 December 1990 indicated the direction of solar flare related \(\Delta H\) vector to be aligned along \(5{^{\circ }}\hbox {E}\) of north at Huancayo and \(28{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) of north at Bacabal. This is expected as the solar flare effects are due to the enhanced conductivity in the ionosphere. The SC at 2230 UT on 26 November 1990 produced a positive impulse in \(\Delta X\) and negative impulse in \(\Delta Y\) at Bacabal with \(\Delta H\) vector aligned along \(27{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) of north. At Huancayo the \(\Delta H\) vector associated with SC is aligned along \(8{^{\circ }}\hbox {E}\) of north, few degrees east to the alignment of the diurnal vector of H. The magnetic storm that followed the SC had a minimum Dst index of –150 nT. The corresponding storm time disturbance in \(\Delta X\) at Huancayo as well as at Bacabal were about –250 nT but \(\Delta Y\) at Bacabal was about +70 nT and very small at Huancayo, that give the alignment of the H vector due to ring current about \(16{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) of north at Bacabal and almost along N–S at Huancayo. Thus alignment of the \(\Delta H\) vector due to ring current at Bacabal is \(14{^{\circ }}\hbox {E}\) of the mean direction of \(\Delta H\) vector during December 1990. This is consistent with the direction of ring current dependent on the dipole declination at the ring current altitude which is about \(5{^{\circ }}\hbox {W}\) of north over Bacabal and the deviation of declination due to the ring current during disturbed period given by the angle (\(\psi \)-D). 相似文献

The geology of the “Vence” landslide (0.8 million m3, south-eastern France) explains the complex hydrology of the site which plays a key role in the destabilization of the slope (water circulation within the sliding mass, fluid exchanges between superficial layers and deep karstic aquifer through faults). To understand fluid circulations within the unstable slope, a 9.5-year multi-parametric survey was set up. The survey combines electrical resistivity tomography (daily acquisition), rainfall records since 2006 and boreholes monitoring groundwater level since 2009. The objective of this work is to present an automated clustering analysis applied to the ERT data enabled to locate geological units displaying distinct hydrogeological behaviours. Clustering analysis, based on a hierarchical ascendant classification (HAC), helped to simplify the ERT section isolating three groups of apparent resistivity values. Comparing the variations of these clusters’ behaviours in time to the variations of the groundwater levels on site, we identified hydrogeological units. The role of the faults cutting the substratum is thereby highlighted. It is the simultaneous analysis of such a large real dataset that allowed obtaining robust results characteristic of the long-term behaviour of the natural hydrogeological system. This type of qualitative information on the variability of the slope hydrogeological behaviour both spatially and temporally is crucial to help improving the conversion of resistivity data into hydrologic quantities. Indeed, the definition of petrophysical models to convert ERT measurements into hydrological measurements should be site-specific and take into account the spatial and temporal variability of the medium. In this work, we show a method that can also help to focus on the areas in depth that have different levels of permeability and observe how the saturation degree evolves in time. This can be used to optimize the location of additional instrumentation (such as temperature probes and chemical sampling) and, thus, help in the prevention of the risk in such problematic areas. 相似文献

Geothermal gases from submarine and subaerial hot springs in Ensenada, Baja California Norte, Mexico, were sampled for determination of gas chemistry and helium, nitrogen and stable carbon isotope composition. The submarine hot spring gas is primarily nitrogen (56.1% by volume) and methane (43.5% by volume), whereas nearby subaerial hot spring gases are predominantly nitrogen (95–99% by volume). The N2/Ar ratios and σ 15N values of the subaerial hot spring gas indicate that it is atmospheric air, depleted in oxygen and enriched in helium. The submarine hot spring gas is most probably derived from marine sediments of Cretaceous age rich in organic matter. CH4 is a major component of the gas mixture (σ 13C = −44.05%0), with only minor amounts of CO2 (σ13C= −10.46%0). The σ15N of N2 is + 0.2%0 with a very high N2/Ar ratio of 160. The calculated isotopic equilibra tion temperature for CH4---CO2 carbon exchange at depth in the Punta Banda submarine geothermal field is approximately 200°C in agreement with other geothermometry estimates. The 3He/4He ratios of the hot spring gases range from 0.3 to 0.6 times the atmospheric ratio, indicating that helium is predominantly derived from the radioactive decay of U and Th within the continental crust. Thus, not all submarine hydrothermal systems are effective vehicles for mantle degassing of primordial helium. 相似文献

The annular (6–8 km diameter) Golda Zuelva and Mboutou anorogenic complexes of North Cameroun are composed of a suite of alkaline plutonic rocks ranging from olivine gabbro to amphibole and biotite granite. For the Mboutou complex there are two overlapping centres. In the Golda Zuelva complex the plutonic rocks are associated with a later hawaiite to rhyolite volcanic suite. A Rb/Sr whole rock isochron gives an age of 66±3 Ma for the Golda Zuelva granites, with initial87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7020, and demonstrates that plutonism and volcanism were essentially contemporaneous and probably cogenetic. For Golda Zuelva and the north Mboutou centre18O/16O (5.6–6.2),87Sr/86Sr (0.7030–0.7045) and Pb isotopic ratios (207Pb/204Pb: 15.60–15.64) support a mantle origin for the initial magmas. Unlike Sr isotopes, the O isotopic ratios of the granitic end members at Golda Zuelva (~7.5) indicate crustal contamination. Post-magmatic alteration was not significant.For the younger south Mboutou centre the O-, Sr- and Pb-isotopic data indicate more extensive magma-crust interaction and in a different (higher level?) crustal environment with δ18O granite=3.3‰,87Sr/86Sr ratios up to 0.706 and Pb isotopic ratios more markedly displaced from the oceanic volcanic field. The low-18O granites probably record, at least in part, a magmatic process with subsequent minor post-magmatic alteration effects. The major and trace element systematics between the north and south Mboutou centres are directly comparable. The evolution of the magmas were dominated by fractional crystallisation and progressive crustal contamination processes. 相似文献

Pointe-à-Pitre, the main city of Guadeloupe in the French West Indies, has on several occasions been partially destroyed by
major historical earthquakes. Moreover, a post-seismic assessment of the damage from the 1985 Montserrat earthquake indicates
that the town is prone to site effects. Consequently, from 1996 to 1998, BRGM conducted a seismic microzonation study based
on geotechnical and geological data. At the same time, three seismological studies were being conducted – two based on earthquake
recordings using a time-series analysis and the classical spectral ratio (CSR) method (CETE/LCPC and BRGM), and the third
based on noise measurement at 400 points using the horizontal-to-vertical noise ratio (HVNR) method (CETE/LCPC). The objective
of this paper is not to carry out a new microzonation study by taking into account all the results, but rather to show in
what respects the results of these different methods are in agreement or not. A comparison of the results of the seismological
studies with the geotechnical microzonation shows that they are in fairly good agreement, albeit with some discrepancies.
The results indicate that the seismological methods and the geotechnical data are highly complementary and should be used
together in compiling seismic transfer-function microzonation maps.

The Erquy series (Côtes du Nord, France) consists, in its upper part, of spilitic pillow lavas with some interbedded volcano-sedimentary horizons.The Rb-Sr system of the pillows allowed the construction of a whole-rock isochron at 482±10 M.a. with an initial87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7055±0.0002. These rocks and the associated keratophyres give, on the other hand, K-Ar ages of 285±16 M.a. interpreted as the consequence of late-hercynian tectonism.A volcano-sedimentary horizon interbedded with such pillow flows has been studied from petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic (Rb-Sr and K-Ar) points of view. The sequence keeps a sedimentary memory. Its clay fractions <2 m and corresponding whole-rocks fit an isochron which is identical to that of the volcanic rocks: 494±11 M.a. with an initial87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7052±0.0005. The clay fractions give K-Ar data at about 450 M.a., but those which contain important amounts of volcanic glass, at the top of the horizon, have K-Ar values as low as 400 M.a., and those which contain almost no glass have a K-Ar age close to the Rb-Sr age at 480 M.a.This study emphasizes the possibility of a complete reset of the K-Ar system of spilitic rocks by a tectonic event without notice-able temperature increase. This result may have important implications on combined paleomagnetic and K-Ar studies: it seems that a least for spilites and keratophyres, the Curie point and Ar blocking temperature can be very different. 相似文献
