Waulsortian-like mounds of the Mississippian Pekisko Formation, Northwestern Alberta: Petrographic and chemical attributes 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The Tournasian age Pekisko carbonates in the Normandville Field (northwestern Alberta) form waulsortian-like, bryozoan/crinoid mounds that developed in fairly deep, low energy, cool water systems, close to the ramp margin. Three main depositional environments occur: (1) crinoidal apron with wackestone, grainstone and floatstone facies; (2) mound flank with grainstone, wackestone, packstone and floatstone facies dipping 35°; and (3) bryozoan mound core, composed of rudstone and floatstone facies with fenestrate bryozoa, minor crinoids and carbonate mud. Local highs due to fault-bounded blocks, created from the collapse of the Devonian Peace River High, may have controlled the location of mound nucleation.Diagenesis of the bryozoan/crinoid mounds included calcite cementation, compaction, dolomitization, silicification, and hydrocarbon emplacement events. The mound core facies contains submarine fascicular optic calcite and bladed/prismatic calcite cements, and later ferroan, brightly luminescent, pore-filling blocky spar cement. The crinoid apron facies contains syntaxial cement associated with crinoids, and the ferroan blocky spar cement. The mounds are dominantly limestone; however, in one well, dolomite dominates the lower section. Four types of dolomite have been identified: partial replacive; chemical-compaction-related, pervasive dolomite and saddle dolomite cement. All dolomites are non-stoichiometric (CaCO3 mole% 56.6–62.6). The partial, zoned replacive dolomite replaces micrite and syntaxial rim calcite in mound flank and crinoid apron facies. The chemical compaction-related dolomite is found along dissolution seams and stylolites and has similar CL characteristics to the replacive dolomite. The pervasive dolomite is fabric destructive and has dull cores and bright rims in CL. Saddle dolomite (0.15 mm) has brightly-luminescent, concentric zoning and occurs in vugs and fossil pore spaces.Chemical and isotopic analysis of the bryozoan/crinoid mounds indicate that the original marine signatures in micrite, early cements, some crinoids and brachiopods have been preserved. However, carbon isotopic values for some crinoids, matrix and dolomite show more positive values compared to known Mississippian carbonate values. Recrystallization during shallow burial has reset the oxygen isotopic composition of some crinoids and micrite. Oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of most dolomites overlap with altered crinoids and early calcite cements. However, saddle dolomites have lighter δ18O values, similar to saddle dolomites from the Devonian Wabamun Group in this area. The isotopic variations in later ferroan calcite cements show an inverted-J trend, possibly due to variable amounts of water-rock interaction. While the Sr-isotopic ratio of submarine calcite cement coincides with that of Mississippian seawater, the later ferroan calcite cement is more radiogenic, indicating a different source of fluids. 相似文献

Vehicle-related hyperthermia is an unfortunate tragedy that leads to the accidental deaths of children each year. This research utilizes the most extensive dataset of child vehicle-related hyperthermia deaths in the United States, including 414 deaths between 1998 and 2008. Deaths follow a seasonal pattern, with a peak in July and no deaths in December or January. Also, deaths occurred over a wide range of temperature and radiation levels and across virtually all regions, although most of them took place across the southern United States. In particular, the Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, and Las Vegas metropolitan areas had the greatest number of deaths. We utilize our vehicle hyperthermia index (vhi) to compare expected deaths versus actual deaths in a metropolitan area, based on the number of children in the area who are under the age of five and on the frequency of hot days in the area. The vhi indicates that the Memphis, West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, and Las Vegas metropolitan areas are the most dangerous places for vehicle-related hyperthermia. We conclude by discussing several recommendations with public health policy implications. 相似文献

The core-accretion mechanism for gas giant formation may be too slow to create all observed gas giant planets during reasonable gas disk lifetimes, but it has yet to be firmly established that the disk instability model can produce permanent bound gaseous protoplanets under realistic conditions. Based on our recent simulations of gravitational instabilities in disks around young stars, we suggest that, even if instabilities due to disk self-gravity do not produce gaseous protoplanets directly, they may create persistent dense rings that are conducive to accelerated growth of gas giants through core accretion. The rings occur at and near the boundary between stable and unstable regions of the disk and appear to be produced by resonances with discrete spiral modes on the unstable side. 相似文献

The great Tohoku-oki earthquake of March 11, 2011 generated a devastating tsunami in the near field as well as substantial far-field effects throughout the Pacific Ocean. In New Zealand, the tsunami was widely observed and instrumentally recorded on an extensive array of coastal tidal gauges and supplemented by current velocity data from two sites. While the tsunami's first arrival was on the morning of March 12 in New Zealand, the strongest effects occurred throughout that afternoon and into the following day. Tsunami effects consisted primarily of rapid changes in water level and associated strong currents that affected numerous bays, harbors, tidal inlets and marine facilities, particularly on the northern and eastern shores of the North Island. The tsunami caused moderate damage and significant overland flooding at one location. The tsunami signal was clearly evident on tide gauge recordings for well over 2 days, clearly illustrating the extended duration of far field tsunami hazards. Real time analysis and modelling of the tsunami through the night of March 11, as the tsunami crossed the Pacific, was used as a basis for escalating the predicted threat level for the northern region of New Zealand. A comparison to recorded data following the tsunami shows that these real time prediction models were accurate despite the coarse near-shore bathymetry used in the assessment, suggesting the efficacy of such techniques for future events from far-field sources. 相似文献

A curve-fit model of the relationship between soil pH (A horizon) and climate forms the basis of a map of predicted pH for the conterminous United States. This map was produced with the aid of a large climatic data base, a computer mapping program and subroutines to map modeled values of soil pH. Patterns of pH follow well-recognized patterns of climate, although the pH of 7 line deviates greatly from Marbut's line dividing pedalfers from pedocals. The overall accuracy of the map and model was checked using a validation data set. Geographic patterns of pH are realistic, although land use, topography, and parent material may cause local variations about the predicted mean for a given region. Several apparently anamolous map patterns were also checked but found to be accurate. Prediction of the detailed pattern of pH will require variables in addition to climate. 相似文献

CLIMATOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF SEVERE WIND-DRIVEN RAIN EVENTS AFFECTING THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES
This paper follows recent studies of wind-driven rain (WDR), and statistically defines a “severe” WDR event. The research suggests a classification for severe WDR events by association with larger-scale weather systems. The study incorporates data for the period 1971 to 1995 and, from these data, the analysis reveals that severe WDR events are confined mainly to the southern United States and occur most frequently in the cold and transition seasons. Extratropical cyclones are the most common synoptic-scale weather systems associated with severe WDR events. Extratropical cyclones originating in three areas accounted for more than 70 percent of the severe events in the study. The cyclone types are referred to as Colorado Lows (CLs), Gulf Lows (GLs), and Texas Lows (TLs). The attendant synoptic-scale conditions of cyclones that produced severe WDR events differ significantly from extratropical cyclones originating in similar areas but not producing severe events. Key differences between the two cyclone populations are the cyclone track trajectories and the low and midlevel synoptic environments promoting cyclone intensification. We present a new set of Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) for horizontal Peak Ground Acceleration, Peak Ground Velocity, and 5 % damped pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA), developed for the San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ) area. Besides using these equations to quantify seismic shaking in the area, the results allow us to examine the physics and local properties controlling the observed ground motions. The analyzed dataset includes ~30,000 observations from ~800 events spanning a magnitude range of 1.5 < M < 6.0 and recorded by up to 140 stations at epicentral distances ranging from essentially zero to 150 km. The local GMPE is developed for the SJFZ by applying classical regression techniques with predictive variables that include first distance and magnitude, and then site characteristics, rupture directivity, and fault zone amplification. The significance of these effects is determined by measuring the uncertainty-reduction of the GMPE due to each factor. The results show that, in contrast to many regional studies, traditional site characteristic has a relatively minor effect on peak amplitudes in our study area. However, rupture directivity is a significant factor controlling the amplitudes of ground motion even for small events. The dense seismic network and newly developed directivity tool enable us to extract efficiently directivity effects with statistical significance, using the ground-motion dataset during the regression analysis process. The obtained rupture directivities are consistent with the main focal mechanism orientations and surface trace orientations, known from other studies, and predictions for bimaterial ruptures in the trifurcation area of the SJFZ. Fault zone amplification is a second important factor, showing strong impact on the peak ground motion values, with increasing role for the lower frequency range (<10 Hz) examined in the 5 % damped PSA values. We also observe signatures of large amplitude-variances, which indicate additional source-related control on the distribution of amplitudes (besides rupture directivity) for aftershocks close in time and location to the M L 5.1 earthquake of March 2013. Using the full set of records we present the most complete set of GMPEs for the SJFZ area, including a higher-amplitude prediction for regions in the direction of rupture. 相似文献
