The objective of this article is to examine the available evidence of intra-plate tectonic episodes of “Grenvillian-type age”, affecting the South-American continent, assessing their possible causal correlation with the tectonic processes occurring within the orogenic belts active at their margins. For the Amazonian Craton, the active margin is represented by the Rondonian-San Ignacio and Sunsas belts. However, active margins of similar age are not recognized for the São Francisco and the Rio de La Plata Cratons, and the intra-plate events over them could be reflections of the Kibaran, Irumide or Namaqua orogenic collisions in Africa. Grenvillian-type age events over the Amazonian Craton can be described in four different aspects: shearing and tectonic reactivation along zones of weakness, cratogenic granitic magmatism, alkaline ring complexes, and pervasive regional heating in some localized regions. The first of them may reflect the compressional stresses at active margins, however the others may have different origins. Within the type-region of the K’Mudku tectono thermal episode, mylonites and pseudotachylites cut across the regional granitoid and metamorphic rocks. These shear belts developed under low-to-moderate temperature conditions, that induced resetting of K–Ar and Rb–Sr mineral ages. In the São Francisco Craton, extensional and compressional events of Grenvillian-type age are well registered by the structural features exhibited by the sedimentary rocks of the Espinhaço Supergroup. For example, in Bahia state, an Appalachian-style structure is observed, with large synclines and anticlines extending along hundreds of kilometers. The major difference between the Amazonian and the Congo-São Francisco Cratons is related to heat originated from the Earth’s interior. Amazonia exhibits very large areas heated up to 350–400 °C, where the K’Mudku thermo-tectonic episodes were detected. In addition, Amazonia comprises a large amount of cratogenic granitic intrusions, and some alkalic complexes of Mesoproterozoic age, whose origin could be attributed, at least partially, to deeper sources of heat. This is not reported for the São Francisco Craton, and also for its African counterpart, the Congo Craton. Moreover, the Grenvillian-type age intra-plate features over South America demonstrate that while many cratonic fragments were colliding to build Rodinia, rifting was already occurring in parts of the Amazonian and the Congo-São Francisco Cratons.  相似文献

A statistical study is made of the magnetic field directional discontinuities observed in early 1976 onboard Helios 1 and 2. Strong day-to-day variations of occurrence rates are found on either tangential (TD) or rotational (RD) discontinuities. No large variation (if any) is found versus either heliocentric distance or heliographic latitude. This contradicts previous findings obtained by the same technique on Pioneer 8 data in 1968–69; however, reasons are given to expect different results, under different solar conditions. The most interesting results come from the study of the morphology of discontinuities: first of all, the orientation of TD's and RD's normals (identified by a minimum variance technique) are strongly organized by the average magnetic field, following their progressive directional change when approaching the Sun. The inclination (θ n ) and azimuthal (? n ) distributions are gaussian and strongly peaked along the field lines for RD's; as regards TD's the normals are perpendicular to the average field and follow its progressive variation; the θ n distribution is isotropic in solid angle, which is interpreted as evidence of crossing of flux tubes on the order of one/hour. Implications of this interpretation in contrast with a turbulent approach are also discussed.  相似文献

Drinking water security is a life safety issue as an adequate supply of safe water is essential for economic, social and sanitary reasons. Damage to any element of a water system, as well as corruption of resource quality, may have significant effects on the population it serves and on all other dependent resources and activities. As well as an analysis of the reliability of water distribution systems in ordinary conditions, it is also crucial to assess system vulnerability in the event of natural disasters and of malicious or accidental anthropogenic acts. The present work summarizes the initial results of research activities that are underway with the intention of developing a vulnerability assessment methodology for drinking water infrastructures subject to hazardous events. The main aim of the work was therefore to provide decision makers with an effective operational tool which could support them mainly to increase risk awareness and preparedness and, possibly, to ease emergency management. The proposed tool is based on Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN), a probabilistic methodology which has demonstrated outstanding potential to integrate a range of sources of knowledge, a great flexibility and the ability to handle in a mathematically sound way uncertainty due to data scarcity and/or limited knowledge of the system to be managed. The tool was implemented to analyze the vulnerability of two of the most important water supply systems in the Apulia region (southern Italy) which have been damaged in the past by natural hazards. As well as being useful for testing and improving the predictive capabilities of the methodology and for possibly modifying its structure and features, the case studies have also helped to underline its strengths and weaknesses. Particularly, the experiences carried out demonstrated how the use of BBN was consistent with the lack of data reliability, quality and accessibility which are typical of complex infrastructures, such as the water distribution networks. The potential applications and future developments of the proposed tool have been also discussed accordingly.  相似文献

The recent hiatus in global temperature at the surface has been analysed by several studies, mainly using global climate models. The common accepted picture is that since the late 1990s, the increase in anthropogenic radiative forcings has been counterbalanced by other factors, e.g., a decrease in natural forcings, augmented ocean heat storage and negative phases of ocean–atmosphere-coupled oscillation patterns. Here, simple vector autoregressive models are used for forecasting the temperature hiatus in the period 2001–2014. This gives new insight into the problem of understanding the ocean contribution (in terms of heat uptake and atmosphere–ocean-coupled oscillations) to the appearance of this recent hiatus. In particular, considering data about the ocean heat content until a depth of 700 m and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation is necessary for correctly forecasting the hiatus, so catching both trend and interannual variability. Our models also show that the ocean heat uptake is substantially driven by the natural component of the total radiative forcing at a decadal time scale, confining the importance of the anthropogenic influences to a longer range warming of the ocean.  相似文献

A Lagrangian numerical approach for the simulation of rapid landslide runouts is presented and discussed. The simulation approach is based on the so‐called Particle Finite Element Method. The moving soil mass is assumed to obey a rigid‐viscoplastic, non‐dilatant Drucker–Prager constitutive law, which is cast in the form of a regularized, pressure‐sensitive Bingham model. Unlike in classical formulations of computational fluid mechanics, where no‐slip boundary conditions are assumed, basal slip boundary conditions are introduced to account for the specific nature of the landslide‐basal surface interface. The basal slip conditions are formulated in the form of modified Navier boundary conditions, with a pressure‐sensitive threshold. A special mixed Eulerian–Lagrangian formulation is used for the elements on the basal interface to accommodate the new slip conditions into the Particle Finite Element Method framework. To avoid inconsistencies in the presence of complex shapes of the basal surface, the no‐flux condition through the basal surface is relaxed using a penalty approach. The proposed model is validated by simulating both laboratory tests and a real large‐scale problem, and the critical role of the basal slip is elucidated. A scheme, based on the expansion of solar oscillations into spherical harmonics, for the identification of sectorial modes of intermediate degree in the interval 3 < l < 20 is presented. In this range, the frequencies of modes with similar quantum numbers can be very close together, so that a careful spectral analysis of their spatial pattern is needed to effectively separate these modes. The filtering scheme proposed is intended to operate on quantized images of the Sun and reaches satisfactory resolving power by a two-step procedure, namely a straightforward filtering followed by the resolution of a system of linear equations. The results obtained are also shown to be independent on the ecliptic longitude of the Earth.  相似文献

The time-dependent equation of radiative transfer is solved exactly and in then-th Gaussian approximation.The atmosphere is plane-parallel and semi-infinite; isotropic scattering is assumed, but the boundary condition at =0 is arbitrary.The results are used to investigate a suggested mechanism for the origin of the secondary pulses in CP 0950; it is found that a binary system of neutron stars can indeed explain formation, time delay and intensity of the observed interpulse.  相似文献

Geomagnetic fluctuations in the frequency band 2–70 mHz recorded simultaneously at a depth of about 1200 m in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (central Italy) and on the earth's surface (approximately along the Laboratory vertical) are compared using multivariate spectral analysis. Experimental problems and analytical techniques adopted for the signal processing are discussed. In particular, a modification of the standard least-squares method for estimating multiple-input transfer functions is proposed. The results show apparent different skin effects for each magnetic field component and a significant coherence between the underground vertical signal and the horizontal signals, suggesting the presence of lateral inhomogeneities in the underground conductivity structure. The results are also consistent with an average resistivity of the intervening medium of the order of 10–20 Ωm and with the presence of a more conductive layer at greater depth.  相似文献

The Fe3+/Fetot of all Fe-bearing minerals has been analysed by Mössbauer spectroscopy in a suite of biotite-rich to biotite-free graphitic metapelite xenoliths, proxies of an amphibolite-granulite transition through progressive biotite melting. Biotite contains 9 to 16% Fe3+/Fetot, whereas garnet, cordierite and ilmenite are virtually Fe3+ -free (0–1% Fe3+/Fetot) in all samples, regardless of biotite presence. Under relatively reducing conditions (graphite-bearing assemblages), biotite is the only carrier of Fe3+ during high-temperature metamorphism; therefore, its disappearance by melting represents an important event of iron reduction during granulite formation, because haplogranitic melts usually incorporate small amounts of ferric iron. Iron reduction is accompanied by the oxidation of carbon and the production of CO2, according to the redox reaction:
Depending on the nature of the peritectic Fe-Mg mineral produced (garnet, cordierite, orthopyroxene), the CO2 can either be present as a free fluid component, or be completely stored within melt and cordierite. The oxidation of graphite by iron reduction can account for the in situ generation of CO2, implying a consequential rather than causal role of CO2 in some granulites and migmatites. This genetic model is relevant to graphitic rocks more generally and may explain why CO2 is present in some granulites although it is not required for their formation.  相似文献
