EPR evidence for maghemitization of magnetite in a tropical soil 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Electron paramagnetic spectroscopy (EPR) was used in combination with standard rock magnetic methods to study magnetic minerals in a tropical soil. The susceptibility and hysteresis measurements showed magnetite grains with a Curie temperature near 850 K as the dominant magnetic remanence carriers in the soil. A minor Ti content in the magnetite was found by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. In order to get insight into the weathering status of the magnetite, different chemical treatments, including oxalate and citrate–bicarbonate–dithionite (CBD) extraction, were applied to the soil samples. The hysteretic properties exhibited no significant differences between the untreated and the CBD or oxalate treated samples. By contrast, the comparison of the EPR spectra revealed a significant broadening of the linewidth (δB) and a shift of the g -values ( g eff ) to lower fields after the CBD treatment. Furthermore, the spectral parameters g eff and δB exhibited an angular dependence. At low temperature, the CBD treated samples showed a jump in δB between 120 and 100 K, the temperature range characteristic for the Verwey transition in magnetite. The changes in the spectral properties after the CBD treatment, which dissolves ferric oxides, were attributed to the removal of maghemite formed by the oxidation of magnetite, that is, during the maghemitization of the magnetite grains. 相似文献

Origin of high field strength element enrichment in volcanic arcs: Geochemical evidence from the Sulu Arc, southern Philippines 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lavas from the Sulu Arc, southern Philippines, exhibit an enrichment in high field strength elements (HFSE) that represents a departure from the typical volcanic arc geochemical signature. It has been postulated that this relative enrichment arises from metasomatism of mantle wedge peridotites by melts derived from the subducting oceanic lithosphere, through formation of amphibole which subsequently breaks down and enriches the mantle source of parental arc magmas in HFSE. Divergent chemical and isotopic characteristics between Sulu Arc HFSE-enriched lavas and the Sulu Sea crust being subducted—the presumed source of slab-derived melts—render it unlikely, however, that HFSE enrichment arises from the influence of such melts. New geochemical data suggest that the varying degrees of HFSE enrichment in Sulu Arc lavas are instead the result of variable amounts of mixing between enriched and depleted mantle end-components—the sources of South China Sea intraplate lavas and Sulu seafloor basalts, respectively—within a compositionally heterogeneous mantle wedge. 相似文献

Re-analysis, using surface, upper-air, and satellite observations specially collected during the Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment-I
(ARMEX-I), has been performed with a global data assimilation system at T-80/L18 resolution. Re-analysis was performed for
the entire ARMEX-I period (15th June–16th August 2002). In this paper we discuss the results based on re-analysis and subsequent
forecasts for two successive intensive observation periods associated with heavy rainfall along the west coast of India during
2–12 August, 2002. Results indicate that the re-analysed fields can bring out better synoptic features, for example troughs
along the west coast and mid tropospheric circulation over the Arabian Sea. Simulated rainfall distribution using re-analysis

Sea-breeze-initiated convection and precipitation have been investigated along the east coast of India during the Indian southwest
monsoon season. Sea-breeze circulation was observed on approximately 70–80% of days during the summer months (June–August)
along the Chennai coast. Average sea-breeze wind speeds are greater at rural locations than in the urban region of Chennai.
Sea-breeze circulation was shown to be the dominant mechanism initiating rainfall during the Indian southwest monsoon season.
Approximately 80% of the total rainfall observed during the southwest monsoon over Chennai is directly related to convection

In this study, we elucidate the temporal characteristics of the onset and withdrawal of the Indian southwest monsoon, making
use of the model integration and daily analyses of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, India. The onset
of the Indian southwest monsoon over the Bay of Bengal is discernable by a gradual increase in the adiabatic generation of
kinetic energy, while over the Arabian Sea it is first noticeable by a steep and abrupt increase of generation. The horizontal
transport of heat indicates a convergence regime over the Bay of Bengal prior to onset, while over the Arabian Sea a convergence
regime is indicated by a change from the divergence to the convergence regime. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is
characterized by the horizontal transport of heat and moisture that evince a transition from the convergence to divergence
regime; similarly, diabatic heating noticed during the active period changes to cooling. The withdrawal over the Arabian Sea
is characterized by the divergence regime of the horizontal transport of moisture. This change precedes even the circulation
changes over northwest India, which may be regarded as a precursor. The withdrawal is further supported by a monotonic decrease
in the net tropospheric moisture over the Arabian Sea, followed by a similar change at land locations. 相似文献

The Mesoarchean (ca. 3075 Ma) Ivisaartoq greenstone belt in southern West Greenland includes variably deformed and metamorphosed pillow basalts, ultramafic flows (picrites), serpentinized ultramafic rocks, gabbros, sulphide-rich siliceous layers, and minor siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Primary magmatic features such as concentric cooling-cracks and drainage cavities in pillows, volcanic breccia, ocelli interpreted as liquid immiscibility textures in pillows and gabbros, magmatic layering in gabbros, and clinopyroxene cumulates in ultramafic flows are well preserved in low-strain domains. The belt underwent at least two stages of calc-silicate metasomatic alteration and polyphase deformation between 2963 and 3075 Ma. The stage I metasomatic assemblage is composed predominantly of epidote (now mostly diopside) + quartz + plagioclase ± hornblende ± scapolite, and occurs mainly in pillow cores, pillow interstitials, and along pillow basalt-gabbro contacts. The origin of this metasomatic assemblage is attributed to seafloor hydrothermal alteration. On the basis of the common presence of epidote inclusions in diopside and the local occurrence of epidote-rich aggregates, the stage I metasomatic assemblage is interpreted as relict epidosite. The stage II metasomatic assemblage occurs as concordant discontinuous layered calc-silicate bodies to discordant calc-silicate veins commonly associated with shear zones. The stage II metasomatic assemblage consists mainly of diopside + garnet + amphibole + plagioclase + quartz ± vesuvianite ± scapolite ± epidote ± titanite ± calcite ± scheelite. Given that the second stage of metasomatism is closely associated with shear zones and replaced rocks with an early metamorphic fabric, its origin is attributed to regional dynamothermal metamorphism. The least altered pillow basalts, picrites, gabbros, and diorites are characterized by LREE-enriched, near-flat HREE, and HFSE (especially Nb)-depleted trace element patterns, indicating a subduction zone geochemical signature. Ultramafic pillows and cumulates display large positive initial εNd values of + 1.3 to + 5.0, consistent with a strongly depleted mantle source. Given the geological similarities between the Ivisaartoq greenstone belt and Phanerozoic forearc ophiolites, we suggest that the Ivisaartoq greenstone belt represents Mesoarchean supra-subduction zone oceanic crust. 相似文献
