We discuss the evolution of black hole transients on the basis of a few systems that were intensively observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (rxte). We focus on the global evolution and the observed state transitions. Rather than giving a numerical recipe for classifying observations, we try to identify times during outbursts at which clear changes occur in the X-ray variability, X-ray spectral, or multi-wavelength properties.  相似文献

A numerical method for objective interpolation of boundary-layer data in the height-time domain is presented. The method is based on a diffusive transport hypothesis and allows for the determination of the optimal ratio between the height and time scales to be used for non-dimensionalising the independent variables z and t. This ratio, with dimensions of a velocity, may be related to the vertical transfer properties of the atmosphere. A few cases during springtime with different stability conditions are discussed, showing that this ratio varies by at least one order of magnitude between day and night.  相似文献

An analysis of wind tunnel data of dispersion from elevated point sources over a flat floor and gently sloping, 2-D hills is performed. (The data were obtained by Khurshudyan et al., 1981.) Formulas for the mixing lengths and the Lagrangian time scales are tested, suitable for use in various dispersion models. Some expressions for the vertical first moments of the plume concentration distribution suitable for shear flow (Hunt, 1985) are also tested.Then, a normalization is suggested, based on the source mean flow and turbulence parameters, for the ground-level concentration maximum value and position along the plume centerline. Using this normalization, the maximum position is almost constant, regardless of source height variation and of whether the hill is present or not, at least for source positions upstream or over the top.The maximum values allow the determination of normalized terrain amplification factors TAFN, which are shown to be in most cases closer to one than the corresponding TAF obtained without normalization.  相似文献

A wide set of published mass and heat transfer data is reviewed in terms of the stochastic renewal theory. A simple model is then proposed describing the transfer in terms of the fluid bulk properties. Two expressions are presented and they enable us to evaluate the bulk transfer velocity as a function of the turbulence of the flow for smooth and fully-rough surfaces in large ranges of Schmidt (or Prandtl) and Reynolds numbers. The transfer over transitional surfaces can also be evaluated by using a simple criterion for the choice of the right expression. The proposed relationships agree satisfactorily with data from laboratory and atmospheric measurements, for both solid and liquid surfaces.  相似文献

This paper proposes a simple conceptual mathematical model for the mechanical components of the NEES‐UCSD large high‐performance outdoor shaking table and focuses on the identification of the parameters of the model by using an extensive set of experimental data. An identification approach based on the measured hysteresis response is used to determine the fundamental model parameters including the effective horizontal mass, effective horizontal stiffness of the table, and the coefficients of the classical Coulomb friction and viscous damping elements representing the various dissipative forces in the system. The effectiveness of the proposed conceptual model is verified through a comparison of analytical predictions with experimental results for various tests conducted on the system. The resulting mathematical model will be used in future studies to model the mechanical components of the shake table in a comprehensive physics‐based model of the entire mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic system. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6), and rare phosphate–sulphate sanjuanite Al2(PO4)(SO4)(OH) 9(H2O) and rossiantonite (Al3(PO4)(SO4) 2(OH)2(H2O)14) have recently been identified as secondary mineral deposits in different quartz‐sandstone caves in the Gran Sabana region, Venezuela. Due to the extended time scale required for speleogenesis in the hard and barely soluble quartz‐sandstone lithology, these caves are considered to be as old as 20 to 30 My. The study of these peculiar secondary mineral deposits potentially reveals important insights for understanding the interaction between deep, superficial and atmospheric processes over thousands to perhaps millions of years. In this study, chemical and petrographic analyses of potential host rock sources, sulphur and oxygen isotope ratios, and meteorological, hydrological and geographical data are used to investigate the origin of sulphates and phospho–sulphates. The results suggest that the deposition of sulphates in these caves is not linked to the quartz‐sandstone host rock. Rather, these mineral deposits originate from an external atmospheric sulphate source, with potential contributions of marine non‐sea salt sulphates, terrestrial dimethyl sulphide and microbially reduced H2S from the forests or peatbogs within the watershed. Air currents within the caves are the most plausible means of transport for aerosols, driving the accumulation of sulphates and other secondary minerals in specific locations. Moreover, the studied sulphate minerals often co‐occur with silica speleothems of biological origin. Although this association would suggest a possible biogenic origin for the sulphates as well, direct evidence proving that microbes are involved in their formation is absent. Nonetheless, this study demonstrates that these quartz‐sandstone caves accumulate and preserve allogenic sulphates, playing a yet unrecognized role in the sulphur cycle of tropical environments.  相似文献

This paper gives a new insight into the linear dynamic behavior of one-storey eccentric systems, with particular attention devoted to provide a comprehensive physically-based formulation of the maximum corner displacement magnification, which involves three contributions (translational response, torsional response and their combination). It is shown that the largest magnifications, which mainly occur for the class of torsionally-flexible systems, are due to the translational contribution which is caused by the shift of the fundamental period of the eccentric system with respect to that of the equivalent not-eccentric system. A simplified method for the estimation of the maximum corner displacement under seismic excitation, based on the physical properties of the eccentric system, is finally proposed.  相似文献

A procedure is described for analysing the transport equations for Reynolds stresses written in a streamline coordinate system, starting from the fields of first- and second-order moments of wind velocity measured in a terrain-following system over topography. In the analysis, the equations are split into two parts: the first contains the terms that can be calculated directly from measurements; the second contains third-order moments that are parameterized using suitable models. To evaluate the error associated with both parts, a Monte-Carlo technique that takes into account the experimental errors is proposed. An example of the application of this method for the Reynolds shear stress equation, using wind-tunnel data for non-separating flow over a two-dimensional valley, is reported. The comparison between the measured and modelled parts is fair near the surface, while at higher levels, the modelled part can be shown to miss a correct treatment of the third-order moments. In the frame of this analysis, the use of the correct derivative transformation has been found to be significant even for moderately sloping topography.  相似文献

This research work focuses on the analysis of the hysteretic seismic behaviour of inelastic SDOF systems equipped with viscous dampers. In detail, it is aimed at obtaining a practical tool useful for the seismic design of building structures with added dampers, within the framework of the traditional seismic design based on ductility. The objective is to evaluate the appropriate force reduction factor for highly damped (i.e. damping ratio greater than 5 %) SDOF systems able to guarantee a prescribed level of structural safety.  相似文献
