The center-of-disk reflectivity of Jupiter in the wavelength range from 1450 to 3150A?has been computed from 30 low-dispersion IUE spectra taken during solar maximum in 1978–1980. A vertically inhomogeneous radiative transfer program is used to compute model reflectivities of various stratospheric compositions for comparison. Ammonia and acetylene are well determined because they show narrow absorption bands in the ultraviolet. Above 1800A?, these two gases provide a good fit to the data, but not below. At shorter wavelengths the fit would be much improved by a small amount (5–15 ppb) of propadiene/allene (C3H4). Voyager IRIS spectra show that the IR bands of allene are not strong enough to be detected in such a small amount. Additional absorption around 1600A?can be reproduced best with the presence of cyclopropane (C3H6, <15ppb), although other absorbers (e.g., hydrocarbon molecules with more than three carbon atoms, oxygen- or nitrogen-containing molecules, or a high-attitude haze) could also explain the spectrum in this region. The data are too noisy to detect possible CO Cameron band absorption near 2000A?.  相似文献

Abstract– Hypervelocity (2.5–7.8 km s?1) impact experiments into sandstone were carried out to investigate the influence of projectile velocity and mass, target pore space saturation, target‐projectile density contrast, and target layer orientation on crater size and shape. Crater size increases with increasing projectile velocity and mass as well as with increasing target pore space saturation. Craters in water‐saturated porous targets are generally shallower and larger in volume and in diameter than craters from equivalent impacts into dry porous sandstone. Morphometric analyses of the resultant craters, 5–40 cm in diameter, reveal features that are characteristic of all of our experimental craters regardless of impact conditions (I) a large central depression within a fragile, light‐colored central part, and (II) an outer spallation zone with areas of incipient spallation. Two different mechanical processes, grain fragmentation and intergranular tensile fracturing, are recorded within these crater morphologies. Zone (I) approximates the shape of the transient crater formed by material compression, displacement, comminution, and excavation flow, whereas (II) is the result of intergranular tensile fracturing and spallation. The transient crater dimensions are reconstructed by fitting quadric parabolas to crater profiles from digital elevation models. The dimensions of this transient and of the final crater show the same trends: both increase in volume with increasing impact energy, and with increasing water saturation of the target pore space. The relative size of the transient crater (in percent of the final crater volume) decreases with increasing projectile mass and velocity, signifying a greater contribution of spallation on the final crater size when projectile mass and velocity are increased.  相似文献

The Skellefte district in northern Sweden is host to abundant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits comprising pyritic, massive, semi-massive and disseminated Zn–Cu–Au ± Pb ores surrounded by disseminated pyrite and with or without stockwork mineralisation. The VMS deposits are associated with Palaeoproterozoic upper crustal extension (D1) that resulted in the development of normal faults and related transfer faults. The VMS ores formed as sub-seafloor replacement in both felsic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks and partly as exhalative deposits within the uppermost part of the volcanic stratigraphy. Subsequently, the district was subjected to deformation (D2) during crustal shortening. Comparing the distribution of VMS deposits with the regional fault pattern reveals a close spatial relationship of VMS deposits to the faults that formed during crustal extension (D1) utilising the syn-extensional faults as fluid conduits. Analysing the shape and orientation of VMS ore bodies shows how their deformation pattern mimics those of the hosting structures and results from the overprinting D2 deformation. Furthermore, regional structural transitions are imitated in the deformation patterns of the ore bodies. Plotting the aspect ratios of VMS ore bodies and the comparison with undeformed equivalents in the Hokuroko district, Japan allow an estimation of apparent strain and show correlation with the D2 deformation intensity of the certain structural domains. A comparison of the size of VMS deposits with their location shows that the smallest deposits are not related to known high-strain zones and the largest deposits are associated with regional-scale high-strain zones. The comparison of distribution and size with the pattern of high-strain zones provides an important tool for regional-scale mineral exploration in the Skellefte district, whereas the analysis of ore body shape and orientation can aid near-mine exploration activities.  相似文献

A tracer test in a carbonate aquifer is analyzed using the method of moments and two analytical advection-dispersion models (ADMs) as well as a numerical model. The numerical model is a coupled continuum-pipe flow and transport model that accounts for two different flow components in karstified carbonate aquifers, i.e., rapid and often turbulent conduit flow and Darcian flow in the fissured porous rock. All techniques employed provide reasonable fits to the tracer breakthrough curve (TBC) measured at a spring. The resulting parameter estimates are compared to investigate how each conceptual model of flow and transport processes that forms the basis of the analyses affects the interpretation of the tracer test. Numerical modeling results suggest that the method of moments and the analytical ADMs tend to overestimate the conduit volume because part of the water discharged at the spring is wrongly attributed to the conduit system if flow in the fissured porous rock is ignored. In addition, numerical modeling suggests that mixing of the two flow components accounts for part of the dispersion apparent in the measured TBC, while the remaining part can be attributed to Taylor dispersion. These processes, however, cannot reasonably explain the tail of the TBC. Instead, retention in immobile-fluid regions as included in a nonequilibrium ADM provides a possible explanation.  相似文献

Is the thematic content of state atlases influenced by the primary sources of atlas funding, private or public? Maps portraying economic conditions, the physical environment, and population dominated state atlases produced between 1970 and 1986, accounting for over 80% of all thematic content. Funding sources effected modest differences in content. Publicly funded state atlases devoted more attention to introductory, physical, and cultural topics, and privately funded state atlases emphasized population, industrial, and agricultural themes.  相似文献

Spectrophotometric scans of Mars and the Moon in the region 4000–5000 Å were obtained and ratioed. No evidence of any absorption greater than 3% is visible in the Martian spectrum. Using our own laboratory spectra of NO2 as well as the published work of Hall and Blacet (1952) we confirm Marshall's (1964) upper limit of 8 μm atmospheres (0.0008 cm amagat) for the abundance of NO2 in the atmosphere of Mars.  相似文献

The Winchcombe meteorite fell on February 28, 2021 and was the first recovered meteorite fall in the UK for 30 years, and the first UK carbonaceous chondrite. The meteorite was widely observed by meteor camera networks, doorbell cameras, and eyewitnesses, and 213.5 g (around 35% of the final recovered mass) was collected quickly—within 12 h—of its fall. It, therefore, represents an opportunity to study very pristine extra-terrestrial material and requires appropriate careful curation. The meteorite fell in a narrow (600 m across) strewn field ~8.5 km long and oriented approximately east–west, with the largest single fragment at the farthest (east) end in the town of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Of the total known mass of 602 g, around 525 g is curated at the Natural History Museum, London. A sample analysis plan was devised within a month of the fall to enable scientists in the UK and beyond to quickly access and analyze fresh material. The sample is stored long term in a nitrogen atmosphere glove box. Preliminary macroscopic and electron microscopic examinations show it to be a CM2 chondrite, and despite an early search, no fragile minerals, such as halite, sulfur, etc., were observed.  相似文献

Predictions for the total inventory of outgassed volatiles on Mars can be developed by studying volatiles in meteorites, terrestial rocks, and the atmospheres of Venus, the Moon, and the Earth. Two models are presented following the basic assumption that the devolatilization of Mars has been analogous to that of the Earth. The recent discovery of a high abundance of argon in the Martian atmosphere appears to indicate that Mars has outgassed as completely as the Earth, but present uncertainties and lacunae in the essential data set permit several other interpretations.  相似文献
