This contribution presents a new perspective on water chemistry and its relation to tidal hydrology in marsh-dominated estuaries. Results are derived from both field and modeling experiments. A heuristic model based on a tidally-averaged advection-dispersion equation is used in conjunction with source-sink terms (for benthic, marsh surface, and open-water exchanges) to make predictions of nutrient concentrations in the water column. Spring-neap tidal contrasts are associated with significant changes in water-column chemistry for a variety of nutrients sampled during the growing season in the Parker River estuary (Massachusetts). For ammonium, phosphate, nitrate plus nitrite, total dissolved N, and total dissolved P, concentrations are significantly lower during spring tides (marshes flooded) than during neap tides (marshes unflooded). Model results indicate that physical changes and open-water processing are insufficient to produce the observed effect, and that explicit biogeochemical processing on marsh surfaces is required. Field observations of changes in nutrient to nutrient ratios with the onset of marsh inundation also support this conclusion. As tides progress from the neap to spring condition, a “spectrum” of trajectories emerges in salinity-nutrient plots developed from both observational datasets and model output. Care must therefore be exercised in designing sampling programs for water chemistry in marsh-dominated ecosystems and in interpreting the resulting mixing diagrams. 相似文献

Application of discriminant function analysis to the Jurassic tholeiites of Gondwanaland allows delineation of three petrologic subprovinces. TiO2 is the most important element in discrimination and a combination of TiO2 and P2O5 was found to be the most suitable. Tholeiites in the foredeep of the Gondwanide fold belt are distinctly different in minor-element composition from those in zones of deep fracturing associated with the Nuanetsi rift-rift-rift triple junction in southern Africa. Intermediate basalt types are found in areas of regional tension not associated with rifted plate margins. The minor-element composition of tholeiites is dependant upon the depth (pressure) from which the magma was tapped and is closely related to prevailing regional tectonic environments. 相似文献

The effects of estuarine circulation and tidal trapping on transport in the Hudson estuary were investigated by a large-scale,
high-resolution numerical model simulation of a tracer release. The modeled and measured longitudinal profiles of surface
tracer concentrations (plumes) differ from the ideal Gaussian shape in two ways: on a large scale the plume is asymmetric
with the downstream end stretching out farther, and small-scale (1–2 km) peaks are present at the upstream and downstream
ends of the plume. A number of diagnostic model simulations (e.g., remove freshwater flow) were performed to understand the
processes responsible for these features. These simulations show that the large-scale asymmetry is related to salinity. The
salt causes an estuarine circulation that decreases vertical mixing (vertical density gradient), increases longitudinal dispersion
(increased vertical and lateral gradients in longitudinal velocities), and increases net downstream velocities in the surface
layer. Since salinity intrusion is confined to the downstream end of the tracer plume, only that part of the plume is effected
by those processes, which leads to the largescale asymmetry. The small-scale peaks are due to tidal trapping. Small embayments
along the estuary trap water and tracer as the plume passes by in the main channel. When the plume in the main channel has

An extensive seismic reflection profile survey conducted concurrently with a sediment coring program in northern Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, and the North Channel revealed a detailed Holocene lake level history. Seven acoustic sequences were identified in the seismic stratigraphy, and these sequences show great variation in both the character and the spatial distribution of sediment deposition through time. The depths to the acoustically-defined sequence boundaries were digitized from the analog seismic records and merged with Loran-C navigation records from the cruise, yielding a three-dimensional record of the location of each sequence boundary. Thicknesses of the sequences were calculated from these depths, and a minimum-curvature spline surface was fit to the thickness data. These surfaces were used to construct isopach maps which show the trends in thickness of sediment accumulation throughout the lake basins for each of the sequences.
14C-AMS dates of materials from the cores fixed the dates of the sediment sequence boundaries, allowing sediment accumulation rates to be calculated. The distribution of sedimentation in the basins as shown on the isopach maps allowed assessment of sediment transport and water flow through the basins over time, which when combined with the work of Lewis & Anderson (1989), provides a detailed record of the transport and drainage of water through these basins as the Wisconsinan ice sheet retreated and isostatic rebound opened and closed outlets. Reversals of flow direction through the Straits of Mackinac and through the channels connecting Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and the North Channel are indicated by changes in sediment thickness distributions. 相似文献

Ten 1 km beaches on Amchitka Island, Alaska, were surveyed once annually in 1972–1974 and in 1982 to determine weights and numbers of fish-net fragments and other plastic litter items. Most litter was from Japanese and Soviet fishing vessels. Litter rapidly increased during 1972–74 (from 122 to 345 kg km?1 of beach) but decreased 26% by 1982 to 255 kg km?1. There was a 37% reduction in weight of trawl web on Amchitka beaches, and the number of gill-net floats declined 47%. The decrease in litter between 1974 and 1982, attributed to fewer trawlers and gill-netters fishing off Alaska, shows that marine litter could be rapidly reduced if disposal of litter at sea were restricted. 相似文献

Observational results obtained to date on interstellar grains and molecules are briefly reviewed, and several promising areas for further research withSpacelab are suggested. Marine capture fisheries face major and complex challenges: habitat degradation, poor economic returns, social hardships from depleted stocks, illegal fishing, and climate change, among others.
