The ionization structure of the auroral arc was measured on a sounding rocket which penetrated into a bright auroral arc. The E-region electron density becomes large (2 ~ 5 × 105 el/cm3 only in the moving auroral arc, whose N2+ 4278 Å brightness is 1 ~ 2·5 kR. The electron density in the D-region beneath the lower boundary of the arc (75 ~ 98 km in altitude) is also considerably enhanced to 2 ~ 5 × 104 el/cm3.The observed E-region electron density can be interpreted theoretically as due to the direct ionization by precipitating electrons, whose energy spectrum is approximately represented by an exponential type having the characteristic energy of 2 keV. The correlation between the electron density and the N2+ 4278 Å brightness can be reasonably explained by considering the simultaneous effects on the ionization and the optical excitation caused by the primary electrons having a flux of 9 × 109 el/cm2/sec per 1 kR of the 4278 Å emission.Further analyses using the electron density data from four other sounding rockets have shown that the D-region ionization has good correlations to the cosmic noise absorption (CNA) and the magnetic substorm activities observed simultaneously at the ground station, whereas it has poor correlation to the same quantity of the E-region measured in the same experiment. It is found that the observed D-region ionization is much larger than that predicted by the theory which takes into account the Bremsstrahlung X-ray ionization along with the direct impact ionization when it is applied to the precipitating electron flux spectrum consistent to the E-region ionization and optical excitation.After all the present experimental results suggest a dual nature of the electron precipitation spectrum in the substorm, i.e. the softer part which is localized in the auroral arc and the harder part which is spatially wide-spread over the substorm area.  相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in beached resin pellets were examined to reveal variability between individual particles and differences among beaches. Fifty-five resin pellets from a beach in Tokyo were individually analyzed for PCBs, and showed concentrations ranging from <28 to 2,300 ng/g. This indicates that concentrations are highly variable between particles. Among several characters, discoloration (e.g., yellowing) had a positive relationship with PCB concentration: discolored pellets contained more PCBs than others on most of the beaches sampled. Given the color-selective ingestion of food by some organisms, this may be ecotoxicologically important. Measurements of samples from 47 beaches in Japan showed regional differences in PCB concentrations in resin pellets consistent with those in mussels. Sporadic high concentrations of PCBs were also found in pellets from remote islands, suggesting that resin pellets could be the dominant route of exposure to the contaminants at remote sites. The similarity of PCB concentrations between resin pellets and mussels suggests a potential use of resin pellets to monitor pollution in seawater.  相似文献

Characteristics of the Sôya Warm Current from Abashiri Bay to the area off the coast of the southern Kuril Islands are clarified by water mass analysis. The water flowing into the Okhotsk Sea as the Sôya Warm Current is divided into two: the Forerunner of the Sôya Warm Water (March to May) and the Sôya Warm Water (June to November). It is shown that in May the Sôya Warm Current flows in the subsurface layer (about 200–400m deep) in Abashiri Bay, and flows northeastward just off the coast of the Kuril Islands as a subsurface current reaching a region northwest of Etorofu Island by the end of May. The dissolved oxygen content is fairly effective in identifying the Forerunner of the Sôya Warm Water in the subsurface layer. The Sôya Warm Current shifts upwards to the surface layer in Abashiri Bay by early July, because the Sôya Warm Water with large thermosteric anomaly t begins to flow into the Okhotsk Sea in June. It is shown that, in general, the major portion of the Sôya Warm Current flows northeastward just off the coast of the Kuril Islands during the summer season, although a minor branch of the current flows northward in the area off the Shiretoko Peninsula, and another minor branch flows out to the Pacific Ocean through the Nemuro Straits.  相似文献

Over-exploited groundwater is expected to remain the predominant source of domestic water in suburban areas of Hanoi, Vietnam. In order to evaluate the effect on groundwater recharge, of decreasing surface-water bodies and land-use change caused by urbanization, the relevant groundwater systems and recharge pathways must be characterized in detail. To this end, water levels and water quality were monitored for 3 years regarding groundwater and adjacent surface-water bodies, at two typical suburban sites in Hanoi. Stable isotope (δ18O, δD of water) analysis and hydrochemical analysis showed that the water from both aquifers and aquitards, including the groundwater obtained from both the monitoring wells and the neighboring household tubewells, was largely derived from evaporation-affected surface-water bodies (e.g., ponds, irrigated farmlands) rather than from rivers. The water-level monitoring results suggested distinct local-scale flow systems for both a Holocene unconfined aquifer (HUA) and Pleistocene confined aquifer (PCA). That is, in the case of the HUA, lateral recharge through the aquifer from neighboring ponds and/or irrigated farmlands appeared to be dominant, rather than recharge by vertical rainwater infiltration. In the case of the PCA, recharge by the above-lying HUA, through areas where the aquitard separating the two aquifers was relatively thin or nonexistent, was suggested. As the decrease in the local surface-water bodies will likely reduce the groundwater recharge, maintaining and enhancing this recharge (through preservation of the surface-water bodies) is considered as essential for the sustainable use of groundwater in the area.

Step-like thermohaline structure was observed near icebergs trapped by fast ice in Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica. The structure was developed within the draft depth of the icebergs. The typical vertical distance between the succeeding step surfaces is 20–30 m, and the temperature and salinity differences across the step surface are about 0.05–0.06 deg and 0.06–0.10 psu, respectively. The structure appears to be generated by a sea-water/iceberg interaction, and is explainable by a simple model in which an ice wall is placed in the ocean linearly stratified by vertical salinity gradient.  相似文献

This paper is a study of idealizing a planar reinforced concrete frame as a non-linear dynamic system for the purpose of simulating its inelastic behaviour during severe earthquakes. After having estimated the restoring force characteristics of all constituent members by experimental means (represented, for example, by a group of empirical equations), it is possible to estimate the non-linear characteristics of the complete structure and to trace the damaging process for each constituent member under a given ground motion disturbance. However, this technique, which is directly based on member-level properties, generally requires rather laborious computational procedures; for practical reasons it is necessary to develop a simplified model, reducing the required calculation without losing the substance of the mechanical phenomena. Thus the reliability of simplification by conventional shear modelling is examined in direct comparison with the response results from rigorous modelling. It is concluded that the shear modelling generally yields an inadequate and, in many cases, erroneous result. The primary cause leading to this discrepancy is identified and, based on this discussion, a more appropriate modelling as simple as conventional shear modelling is proposed.  相似文献

SELENE (Selenological and Engineering Explorer) project started as a joint mission of the former ISAS (Institute of Space and Astronautical Science) and the former NASDA (National Space Development Agency: the two organizations were merged into JAXA in 2002) of Japan in 1998. The launch target is rescheduled for 2006 due to delay of completion of launch vehicle, H-IIA. The SELENE project is now under a sustained design phase. The flight model components were manufactured, and the interface tests between the bus-system and the mission instruments were completed by the end of March 2004. The functional checks and calibration for the flight model components are being carried out at present. From the beginning of 2005, the final assembly tests will start.  相似文献

Groundwater pollution by arsenic is a major health threat in suburban areas of Hanoi, Vietnam. The present study evaluates the effect of the sedimentary environments of the Pleistocene and Holocene deposits, and the recharge systems, on the groundwater arsenic pollution in Hanoi suburbs distant from the Red River. At two study sites (Linh Dam and Tai Mo communes), undisturbed soil cores identified a Pleistocene confined aquifer (PCA) and Holocene unconfined aquifer (HUA) as major aquifers, and Holocene estuarine and deltaic sediments as an aquitard layer between the two aquifers. The Holocene estuarine sediments (approximately 25–40 m depth, 9.6–4.8 cal ka BP) contained notably high concentrations of arsenic and organic matter, both likely to have been accumulated by mangroves during the Holocene sea-level highstand. The pore waters in these particular sediments exhibited elevated levels of arsenic and dissolved organic carbon. Arsenic in groundwater was higher in the PCA (25–94 μg/L) than in the HUA (5.2–42 μg/L), in both the monitoring wells and neighboring household tubewells. Elevated arsenic concentration in the PCA groundwater was likely due to vertical infiltration through the arsenic-rich and organic-matter-rich overlying Holocene estuarine sediments, caused by massive groundwater abstraction from the PCA. Countermeasures to prevent arsenic pollution of the PCA groundwater may include seeking alternative water resources, reducing water consumption, and/or appropriate choice of aquifers for groundwater supply.  相似文献
