A mineral equilibria study of the hydrothermal alteration in mafic greenschist facies rocks at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The influx of a H2O–CO2‐dominated fluid into actinolite‐bearing metabasic rocks during greenschist facies metamorphism in the Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia resulted in a zoned alteration halo around inferred fluid conduits that contain gold mineralisation. The alteration halo is divided into two outer zones, the chlorite zone and the carbonate zone, and an inner pyrite zone adjacent to the inferred fluid conduits. Reaction between the fluid and the protolith resulted in the breakdown of actinolite and the development of chlorite, dolomite, calcite and siderite. In addition, rocks in the pyrite zone developed muscovite‐bearing assemblages as a consequence of the introduction of potassium by the fluid. Mineral equilibria calculations undertaken using the computer software thermocalc in the model system Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–CO2 show that mineral assemblages in the outer zones of the alteration halo are consistent with equilibrium of the protoliths with a fluid of composition XCO2 = CO2/(CO2 + H2O) = 0.1–0.25 for temperatures of 315–320 °C. The inner zone of the alteration halo reflect equilibrium with a fluid of composition XCO2≈ 0.25. Fluid‐rock buffering calculations show that the alteration halo is consistent with interaction with a single fluid composition and that the zoned structure of the halo reflects the volume of this fluid with which the rocks reacted. This fluid is likely to have also been the one responsible for the gold mineralisation at Kalgoorlie. 相似文献

Rainfall weakens an earth slope and triggers mass movement. Relevant triggering mechanisms are complex and include reduction of capillary pressure due to increased saturation and frictional drag on the sediment induced by fluid flow. Physics‐based continuum models utilizing modern computational tools are useful for understanding the mechanisms of deformation in partially saturated slopes; however, they do not provide a scalar indicator called ‘factor of safety’ that measures the potential of a given slope for mass movement. In the present work, we employ sequential calculations consisting of a physics‐based finite element model that couples solid deformation with fluid flow to quantify the stress and deformation fields in a steep hillside slope subjected to rainfall infiltration. This is followed by a limit‐equilibrium calculation based on the method of slices that evaluates the desired factor of safety. The field condition investigated is similar to the steep experimental catchment CB1 near Coos Bay, Oregon, which failed as a large debris flow from heavy rainfall. In this paper we present the results of the past two years observations on the galactic microquasar LS I +61 303 with the
Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope. The recent MAGIC detection of the source between 200 GeV and 4 TeV suggests that the source
is periodic with very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission linked to its orbital cycle. The entire 50-hour data set obtained
with Whipple from 2004 to 2006 was analyzed with no reliable detection resulting. The upper limits obtained in the 2005–2006
season covered several of the same epochs as the MAGIC Telescope detections, albeit with lower sensitivity. Upper limits are
placed on emission during the orbital phases of 0→0.1 and 0.8→1, phases which are not included in the MAGIC data set.

We show that smoothed time series of 7 indices of solar activity exhibit significant solar cycle dependent differences in
their relative variations during the past 20 years. In some cases these observed hysteresis patterns start to repeat over
more than one solar cycle, giving evidence that this is a normal feature of solar variability. Among the indices we study,
we find that the hysteresis effects are approximately simple phase shifts, and we quantify these phase shifts in terms of
lag times behind the leading index, the International Sunspot Number. Our measured lag times range from less than one month
to greater than four months and can be much larger than lag times estimated from short-term variations of these same activity
indices during the emergence and decay of major active regions. We argue that hysteresis represents a real delay in the onset
and decline of solar activity and is an important clue in the search for physical processes responsible for changing solar
emission at various wavelengths.

Abstract— The Martian meteorite Yamato (Y‐) 980459 is an olivine‐phyric shergottite. It has a very primitive character and may be a primary melt of the Martian mantle. We have conducted crystallization experiments on a synthetic Y‐980459 composition at Martian upper mantle conditions in order to test the primary mantle melt hypothesis. Results of these experiments indicate that the cores of the olivine megacrysts in Y‐980459 are in equilibrium with a melt of bulk rock composition, suggesting that these megacrysts are in fact phenocrysts that grew from a magma of the bulk rock composition. Multiple saturation of the melt with olivine and a low‐calcium pyroxene occurs at approximately 12 ± 0.5 kbar and 1540 ± 10°C, suggesting that the meteorite represents a primary melt that separated from its mantle source at a depth of ?100 km. Several lines of evidence suggest that the Y‐980459 source underwent extensive melting prior to and/or during the magmatic event that produced the Y‐980459 parent magma. When factored into convective models of the Martian interior, the high temperature indicated for the upper Martian mantle and possibly high melt fraction for the Y‐980459 magmatic event suggests a significantly higher temperature at the core‐mantle boundary than previously estimated. 相似文献

A significant difference exists between estimates of contaminant atmospheric transport and dispersion calculated by an ensemble-averaged model and the turbulent details of any particular atmospheric transport and dispersion realization. In some cases, however, it is important to be able to make inferences of these realizations using ensemble-averaged models. It is possible to make such inferences if there are sensors in the field to report contaminant concentration observations. Any information determined about the atmospheric transport and dispersion realization can then be assimilated into a forecast model. This approach can enhance the accuracy of the atmospheric transport and dispersion forecast of a particular event. This work adopts that approach and reports on a genetic algorithm used to optimize the variational problem. Given contaminant sensor measurements and a transport and dispersion model, one can back-calculate unknown source and meteorological parameters. In this case, we demonstrate the dynamic recovery of unknown meteorological variables, including the transport variables that comprise the “outer variability” (wind speed and wind direction) and the dispersion variables that comprise the “inner variability” (contaminant spread). The optimization problem is set up in an Eulerian grid space, where the comparison of the concentration field variable between the predictions and the observations forms the cost function. The transport and dispersion parameters, which are determined from the optimization, are in Lagrangian space. This calculation is applied to continuous and instantaneous releases in a horizontally homogeneous wind field such as that observed during traditional transport and dispersion field experiments. The method proves to be successful at recovering the unknown transport and dispersion parameters for a numerical experiment. 相似文献

The height of widespread tsunami runup about the Bay of Plenty from various volcanic scenarios involving eruptions at White Island is shown to be insignificant in all cases considered, except for Krakatoa‐type explosions. The problem of localised inundation remains unanswered. Some definitions describing volcanic tsunami risk, introduced recently by J. Latter (Bulletin volcanologique 1982), are briefly mentioned. All numerical calculations assumed cylindrical symmetry and used a flux‐corrected Lax‐Wendroff algorithm to solve the modified shallow water equations of Peregrine. 相似文献
