Phosphorus is considered to be one of the most important factors in the maintenance of an aquatic eco-system. The study deals with the relation of available inorganic phosphate in water with phytoplankton abundance. The phytoplankton count ranged between 487 and 1711 indiv./l, while phosphate ranged between 0.18 and 1.23 mg/l. A maximum population of phytoplankton was observed in the month of January 1988 and a minimum observed in April 1988. The correlation between the changes in phosphate concentration and phytoplankton abundance revealed an inverse relationship (r= ?0.0773, P>0.05), and the regression is expressed by Y = 370 + 755 (x), indicating its link in the cycle of autotrophs though not significantly. 相似文献

We collected surface sediment samples from 174 locations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines and analyzed them for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes. PAHs were widely distributed in the sediments, with comparatively higher concentrations in urban areas (∑PAHs: ∼1000 to ∼100 000 ng/g-dry) than in rural areas (∼10 to ∼100 g-dry), indicating large sources of PAHs in urban areas. To distinguish petrogenic and pyrogenic sources of PAHs, we calculated the ratios of alkyl PAHs to parent PAHs: methylphenanthrenes to phenanthrene (MP/P), methylpyrenes + methylfluoranthenes to pyrene + fluoranthene (MPy/Py), and methylchrysenes + methylbenz[a]anthracenes to chrysene + benz[a]anthracene (MC/C). Analysis of source materials (crude oil, automobile exhaust, and coal and wood combustion products) gave thresholds of MP/P = 0.4, MPy/Py = 0.5, and MC/C = 1.0 for exclusive combustion origin. All the combustion product samples had the ratios of alkyl PAHs to parent PAHs below these threshold values. Contributions of petrogenic and pyrogenic sources to the sedimentary PAHs were uneven among the homologs: the phenanthrene series had a greater petrogenic contribution, whereas the chrysene series had a greater pyrogenic contribution. All the Indian sediments showed a strong pyrogenic signature with MP/P ≈ 0.5, MPy/Py ≈ 0.1, and MC/C ≈ 0.2, together with depletion of hopanes indicating intensive inputs of combustion products of coal and/or wood, probably due to the heavy dependence on these fuels as sources of energy. In contrast, sedimentary PAHs from all other tropical Asian cities were abundant in alkylated PAHs with MP/P ≈ 1-4, MPy/Py ≈ 0.3-1, and MC/C ≈ 0.2-1.0, suggesting a ubiquitous input of petrogenic PAHs. Petrogenic contributions to PAH homologs varied among the countries: largest in Malaysia whereas inferior in Laos. The higher abundance of alkylated PAHs together with constant hopane profiles suggests widespread inputs of automobile-derived petrogenic PAHs to Asian waters. 相似文献

The use of rice husk as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of copper from wastewater has been explored in a laboratory scale experiment. The rice husk used for the study was treated with alkali to increase the sorption properties. The influence of metal ion concentration, weight of biosorbent, stirring rates, temperature and pH were also evaluated, and the results are fitted using adsorption isotherm models. From the experimental results it was observed that almost 90–98% of the copper could be removed using treated rice husk. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm, Freundlich isotherm and Tempkin isotherm models were used to describe the distribution of copper between the liquid and solid phases in batch studies, and it was observed that the Langmuir isotherm better represented the adsorption phenomenon. The experimental rate constant, activation energy, Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy of the reaction were calculated in order to determine the mechanism of the sorption process. 相似文献

Rockwall slope erosion is defined for the upper Bhagirathi catchment using cosmogenic Beryllium-10 (10Be) concentrations in sediment from medial moraines on Gangotri glacier. Beryllium-10 concentrations range from 1.1 ± 0.2 to 2.7 ± 0.3 × 104 at/g SiO2, yielding rockwall slope erosion rates from 2.4 ± 0.4 to 6.9 ± 1.9 mm/a. Slope erosion rates are likely to have varied over space and time and responded to shifts in climate, geomorphic and/or tectonic regime throughout the late Quaternary. Geomorphic and sedimentological analyses confirm that the moraines are predominately composed of rockfall and avalanche debris mobilized from steep relief rockwall slopes via periglacial weathering processes. The glacial rockwall slope erosion affects sediment flux and storage of snow and ice at the catchment head on diurnal to millennial timescales, and more broadly influences catchment configuration and relief, glacier dynamics and microclimates. The slope erosion rates exceed the averaged catchment-wide and exhumation rates of Bhagirathi and the Garhwal region on geomorphic timescales (103−105 years), supporting the view that erosion at the headwaters can outpace the wider catchment. The 10Be concentrations of medial moraine sediment for the upper Bhagirathi catchment and the catchments of Chhota Shigri in Lahul, northern India and Baltoro glacier in Central Karakoram, Pakistan show a tentative relationship between 10Be concentration and precipitation. As such there is more rapid glacial rockwall slope erosion in the monsoon-influenced Lesser and Greater Himalaya compared to the semi-arid interior of the orogen. Rockwall slope erosion in the three study areas, and more broadly across the northwest Himalaya is likely governed by individual catchment dynamics that vary across space and time. © 2019 The Authors. Simultaneous measurements on physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosols over a tropical semi-arid location, Agra
in north India, were undertaken during December 2004. The average concentration of total suspended particulates (TSP) increased
by about 1.4 times during intense foggy/hazy days. Concentrations of SO4
2−, NO3
−, NH4
+ and Black Carbon (BC) aerosols increased by 4, 2, 3.5 and 1.7 times, respectively during that period. Aerosols were acidic
during intense foggy/hazy days but the fog water showed alkaline nature, mainly due to the neutralizing capacity of NH4 aerosols. Trajectory analyses showed that air masses were predominantly from NW direction, which might be responsible for
transport of BC from distant and surrounding local sources. Diurnal variation of BC on all days showed a morning and an evening
peak that were related to domestic cooking and vehicular emissions, apart from boundary layer changes. OPAC (Optical properties
of aerosols and clouds) model was used to compute the optical properties of aerosols. Both OPAC-derived and observed aerosol
optical depth (AOD) values showed spectral variation with high loadings in the short wavelengths (<1 μm). AOD value at 0.5 μm
wavelength was significantly high during intense foggy/hazy days (1.22) than during clear sky or less foggy/hazy days (0.63).
OPAC-derived Single scattering albedo (SSA) was 0.84 during the observational period, indicating significant contribution
of absorbing aerosols. However, the BC mass fraction to TSP increased by only 1% during intense foggy/hazy days and thereby
did not show any impact on SSA during that period. A large increase was observed in the shortwave (SW) atmospheric (ATM) forcing
during intense foggy/hazy days (+75.8 W/m2) than that during clear sky or less foggy/hazy days (+38 W/m2), mainly due to increase in absorbing aerosols. Whereas SW forcing at surface (SUF) increased from −40 W/m2 during clear sky or less foggy/hazy days to −76 W/m2 during intense foggy/hazy days, mainly due to the scattering aerosols like SO4

We analyse warps in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxies observed in the Spitzer /Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) 4.5-μm band. In our sample of 24 galaxies, we find evidence of warp in 14 galaxies. We estimate the observed onset radii for the warps in a subsample of 10 galaxies. The dark matter distribution in each of these galaxies are calculated using the mass distribution derived from the observed light distribution and the observed rotation curves. The theoretical predictions of the onset radii for the warps are then derived by applying a self-consistent linear response theory to the obtained mass models for six galaxies with rotation curves in the literature. By comparing the observed onset radii to the theoretical ones, we find that discs with constant thickness can not explain the observations; moderately flaring discs are needed. The required flaring is consistent with the observations. Our analysis shows that the onset of warp is not symmetric in our sample of galaxies. We define a new quantity called the onset-asymmetry index and study its dependence on galaxy properties. The onset asymmetries in warps tend to be larger in galaxies with smaller disc scalelengths. We also define and quantify the global asymmetry in the stellar light distribution, that we call the edge-on asymmetry in edge-on galaxies. It is shown that in most cases the onset asymmetry in warp is actually anticorrelated with the measured edge-on asymmetry in our sample of edge-on galaxies and this could plausibly indicate that the surrounding dark matter distribution is asymmetric. 相似文献

Surface geophysical surveys provide an effective way to image the subsurface and the ground water zone without a large number of observation wells. DC resistivity sounding generally identifies the subsurface formations-the aquifer zone as well as the formations saturated with saline/brackish water. However, the method has serious ambiguities in distinguishing the geological formations of similar resistivities such as saline sand and saline clay, or water quality such as fresh or saline, in a low resistivity formation. In order to minimize the ambiguity and ascertain the efficacy of data integration techniques in ground water and saline contamination studies, a combined geophysical survey and periodic chemical analysis of ground water were carried out employing DC resistivity profiling, resistivity sounding, and shallow seismic refraction methods. By constraining resistivity interpretation with inputs from seismic refraction and chemical analysis, the data integration study proved to be a powerful method for identification of the subsurface formations, ground water zones, the subsurface saline/brackish water zones, and the probable mode and cause of saline water intrusion in an inland aquifer. A case study presented here illustrates these principles. Resistivity sounding alone had earlier failed to identify the different formations in the saline environment. Data integration and resistivity interpretation constrained by water quality analysis led to a new concept of minimum resistivity for ground water-bearing zones, which is the optimum value of resistivity of a subsurface formation in an area below which ground water contained in it is saline/brackish and unsuitable for drinking. 相似文献

The Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) was launched on 23 July 2001 on NOAAs GOES-12 satellite and completed post-launch testing on 20 December 2001. It was brought into operations on 21 January 2003. This paper documents SXI performance and calibrations prior to an instrument degradation that occurred on 5 November 2003 and thus covers more than 420000 soft X-ray images of the Sun. This paper details component-level as well as full-system calibrations characterizing the spatial and spectral performance of the instrument, including the grazing-incidence mirror, filters, and the properties of the MCP-intensified CCD detector system. Routine image corrections are also described. These include background (dark current) subtraction, flat-fielding, off-band light-leak correction, and image pointing and timing considerations. In addition, a signal-to-noise analysis is presented. The information contained in this study is intended to enable researchers to conduct quantitative analysis of GOES-12 SXI images. 相似文献

Syntectonic plutons emplaced in shallow crust often contain intermediate-to low-temperature deformation microstructures but
lack a high-temperature, subsolidus deformation fabric, although the relict magmatic fabric is preserved. The Proterozoic
Vellaturu granite emplaced at the eastern margin of the northern Nallamalai fold belt, south India during the late phase of
regional deformation has a common occurrence of intermediate-to low-temperature deformation fabric, superimposed over magmatic
fabric with an internally complex pattern. But high-T subsolidus deformation microstructure and fabric are absent in this
pluton. The main crystal plastic deformation and fluid enhanced reaction softening was concentrated along the margin of the
granite body. Resulting granite mylonites show Y-maximum c-axis fabric in completely recrystallized quartz ribbonds, dynamic recrystallization of perthites, and myrmekite indicative
of fabric development under intermediate temperature (∼ 500–400°C). The weakly-deformed interior shows myrmekite, feldspar
microfracturing and limited bulging recrystallization of quartz. The abundance of prism subgrain boundaries is indicative
of continuing deformation through low-temperature (∼ 300°C). The relative rates of cooling influenced by advective heat transfer
and deformation of the pluton seem to control the overall subsolidus fabric development. The rapid advective heat transfer
from the interior in the early stages of subsolidus cooling was followed by slow cooling through intermediate temperature
window as a well-developed phyllosilicate rich mylonitic skin around the granite body slowed down conductive heat loss. Low-T
crystal plastic deformation of quartz was effected at a late stage of cooling and deformation of the shallow crustal granite
body emplaced within the greenschist facies Nallamlai rocks. 相似文献

The design and performance of an offshore structure depends largely upon the response of the structure to the environmental loading such as waves. The extreme response chosen for the design of a structure should meet its lifetime response, operational response as well as the fatigue damage. The failure of the structural member may be caused by the maximum instantaneous stress experienced by the member due to a given environment. This is considered short-term as opposed to long-term or fatigue damage. The short-term response statistics are obtained on the basis of one particular seastate. Since this seastate is invariably high, nonlinearity in the excitation and response of the structure is almost invariably present. The general nonlinear problem in the extreme response prediction is largely unsolved. Response characteristics are often obtained from the perturbation methods and equivalent linearization techniques. Unlike nonlinear problems, these methods greatly simplify the analysis for extreme values. This paper reviews the available approximation techniques in the response computation and the limits of their applicability in a design situation. Results are illustrated so that a designer may evaluate the suitability of a method in a particular design condition. 相似文献
