I suggest that the exploding granule phenomenon is a consequence of the observed internal granular motions and the conservation of angular momentum. When a granule rising from the convection zone penetrates into the overlying stable region it is stretched out horizontally. Conservation of angular momentum in the internal motions changes its form into a vortex ring. A time sequence of photographs showing an exploding solar granule is described. The proposed mechanism is illustrated by a laboratory simulation and a numerical calculation. 相似文献

We have analyzed magnetograph observations of the 5-min oscillations. We find that most of the oscillatory power is concentrated in space and frequency. Major element compositional overlap exists between microspherules of different microtektite layers or strewnfields. For this reason, microspherules of similar composition cannot, a priori, be assumed to belong to the same microtektite event and those of different compositions cannot, a priori, be assumed to result from different events. Nevertheless, despite major element compositional overlap between microspherules of different strewnfields, multivariate factor analysis shows microtektites and related microspherules of three stratigraphically different late Eocene layers to follow recognizably different compositional trends. The microtektite population of the North American strewnfield (Globorotalia cerroazulensis Zone) follows compositionally well defined trends and is characterized by high concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, and TiO2. The microspherule population of the slightly older crystal-bearing Globorotalia cerroazulensis Zone microspherule layer is more heterogeneous and characterized by microspherules which are relatively enriched in FeO and MgO and relatively impoverished in SiO2 and TiO2. The microspherule population of the oldest microspherule layer in the uppermost Globigerapsis semiinvoluta Zone is highly heterogeneous and characterized by microspherules which are relatively enriched in CaO and impoverished in Al2O3 and Na2O. Individual microspherules of this oldest late Eocene horizon often exhibit major element compositions similar to those of the lower Gl. cerroazulensis Zone layer and occasionally exhibit major element compositions similar to North American layer microtektites. Nevertheless, late Eocene microspherule occurrences can be assigned to appropriate late Eocene microtektite horizons on the basis of major element compositional trends. 相似文献

The Blake Outer Ridge is a 480–kilometer long linear sedimentary drift ridge striking perpendicular to the North American
coastline. By modeling free-air gravity anomalies we tested for the presence of a crustal feature that may control the location
and orientation of the Blake Outer Ridge. Most of our crustal density models that match observed gravity anomalies require
an increase in oceanic crustal thickness of 1–3 km on the southwest side of the Blake Outer Ridge relative to the northeast
side. Most of these models also require 1–4 km of crustal thinning in zone 20–30 km southwest of the crest of the Blake Outer
Ridge. Although these features are consistent with the structure of oceanic fracture zones, the Blake Outer Ridge is not parallel
to adjacent known fracture zones. Magnetic anomalies suggest that the ocean crust beneath this feature formed during a period
of mid-ocean ridge reorganization, and that the Blake Outer Ridge may be built upon the bathymetric expression of an oblique
extensional feature associated with ridge propagation. It is likely that the orientation of this trough acted as a catalyst
for sediment deposition with the start of the Western Boundary Undercurrent in the mid-Oligocene. 相似文献

Sulfide oxidizing bacterial mats are common in regions of the continental shelves characterized by high primary production and the resultant oxygen minimum zone. These mats are made up of several species of Beggiatoa and/or Thioploca, which oxidize sulfide that is generated in the sediment. Thioploca spp. inhabit a large polysaccharide sheath that encompasses bundles of 1–20 filaments (trichomes), each ranging from 3 to 60 μm in diameter. This sheath has been shown to be a critical component of the autecology of Thioploca. Analysis of Thioploca from cold seeps in Monterey Bay using light and transmission electron microscopy identified new and diverse microbial assemblages associated with interstitial spaces between trichomes, inside the sheath. Small diameter, non‐vacuolate, filamentous prokaryotes were numerous. Amoebae, euglenozoa, ciliates and other protists of unknown affiliation were observed in sheaths. Most of the protists possessed food vacuoles and some protists showed ultrastructural evidence of endosymbionts. These observations suggest that Thioploca sheaths may serve as oases on the sea floor, providing nutritional and detoxification services to previously unrecognized microbial partners. 相似文献

Remediation of subsurface contamination requires an understanding of the contaminant (history, source location, plume extent and concentration, etc.), and, knowledge of the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity (K) that governs groundwater flow and solute transport. Many methods exist for characterizing K heterogeneity, but most if not all methods require the collection of a large number of small‐scale data and its interpolation. In this study, we conduct a hydraulic tomography survey at a highly heterogeneous glaciofluvial deposit at the North Campus Research Site (NCRS) located at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada to sequentially interpret four pumping tests using the steady‐state form of the Sequential Successive Linear Estimator (SSLE) ( Yeh and Liu 2000 ). The resulting three‐dimensional (3D) K distribution (or K‐tomogram) is compared against: ( 1 ) K distributions obtained through the inverse modeling of individual pumping tests using SSLE, and ( 2 ) effective hydraulic conductivity (Keff) estimates obtained by automatically calibrating a groundwater flow model while treating the medium to be homogeneous. Such a Keff is often used for designing remediation operations, and thus is used as the basis for comparison with the K‐tomogram. Our results clearly show that hydraulic tomography is superior to the inversions of single pumping tests or Keff estimates. This is particularly significant for contaminated sites where an accurate representation of the flow field is critical for simulating contaminant transport and injection of chemical and biological agents used for active remediation of contaminant source zones and plumes. 相似文献
