Analytical estimates of melt volumes produced by a given projectile and contained in a given impact crater are derived as a function of impact velocity, impact angle, planetary gravity, target and projectile densities, and specific internal energy of melting. Applications to impact events and impact craters on the Earth, Moon, and Mars are demonstrated and discussed. The most probable oblique impact (45°) produces ~1.6 times less melt volume than a vertical impact, and ~1.6 and 3.7 times more melt volume than impacts with 30° and 15° trajectories, respectively. The melt volume for a particular crater diameter increases with planetary gravity, so a crater on Earth should have more melt than similar-size craters on Mars and the Moon. The melt volume for a particular projectile diameter does not depend on gravity, but has a strong dependence on impact velocity, so the melt generated by a given projectile on the Moon is significantly larger than on Mars. Higher surface temperatures and geothermal gradients increase melt production, as do lower energies of melting. Collectively, the results imply thinner central melt sheets and a smaller proportion of melt particles in impact breccias on the Moon and Mars than on Earth. These effects are illustrated in a comparison of the Chicxulub crater on Earth, linked to the Cretaceous–Tertiary mass extinction, Gusev crater on Mars, where the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit landed, and Tsiolkovsky crater on the Moon. The results are comparable to those obtained from field and spacecraft observations, other analytical expressions, and hydrocode simulations.  相似文献

This article presents a bibliometric analysis of the vulnerability research field. We analyze 200 articles on vulnerability published between 1973 and 2012, in the context of the United States. The intent of this article is to compare the levels of activity of several academic disciplines and bodies of work in vulnerability scholarship and to examine which topics are most studied in them. Topic code use was assessed using the qualitative research data analysis tool Atlas.ti, which permits users to locate, code, and annotate article text fragments. Article categorization was measured both by coding first author organizational affiliation and using the ISI Web of Knowledge journal citation reports categorization scheme that assigns journals to a discipline; each article was coded by its journal category.  相似文献

Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia emits hyperacid (pH ≈ 0) brines rich in toxic elements including F, Al, Cd and Tl, which are transported downstream by the Banyu Pahit River, which is eventually used to irrigate farmland on the Asambagus Plain. The fate and behavior of major and trace elements are investigated, in the region of greatest change to the Banyu Pahit River, where thermal springs and the neutral Kali Sat and Kali Senggon Rivers increase its discharge 6-fold and pH increases from 1.9 to 4.5 with the development of abundant precipitates. The conservative behavior of Cl, F and SO4 allows determination of the proportions of the mixing constituents at each confluence. Comparing a mass balance model based on the resulting proportions with measured concentrations demonstrates conservative behavior for most cations, with the exception of Si, Zr, Sn and Ba, which precipitate as amorphous silica, barite, and Zr and Sn phases, respectively. Iron is added as particulate Fe-(oxy)hydroxide in mixing with thermal spring outflow, and dissolves in the lower pH water. This also contributes Co, Cd, Mn, Y, and the rare earth elements, which are desorbed from the Fe-(oxy)hydroxide upon entering the acid water. Subsequent saturation in Fe-(oxy)hydroxide after mixing with the neutral rivers leads to a reverse response. Still, element behavior is close to conservative, which means that the volcanogenic toxic element load is almost entirely transferred to the Asambagus Plain with ensuing environmental and health impacts. This study shows that compositions of these acid waters can be understood and reproduced in a thermodynamic model, but only when fine-tuned using measured compositions and field observations. Therefore, the model’s utility in assessing the fate of toxic elements and in planning the environmental mitigation is limited.  相似文献

To remain viable, agricultural producers will need to adapt to changing climatic conditions in coming decades. Agricultural advisers play an important role in helping producers decide to adopt appropriate adaptation practices. Photovisualizations have the potential to complement currently utilized outreach and education strategies. This research uses a focus group approach to explore (1) whether photovisualizations can aid in decision-making about climate change adaptation, and (2) what characteristics of photovisualizations are most effective at conveying spatial aspects of adaptation practices. We found that photovisualizations generate rich discussions about ecological and economic effects as well as tradeoffs associated with climate adaptation practices. To have the greatest impact, photovisualizations should be used when producers are considering implementing high-cost or high-risk projects, when practices are likely to dramatically change the visual landscape, or when a practice is unfamiliar to a producer.  相似文献

The issue of crater retention age estimates on planetary surfaces is discussed with an attempt to quantify the effect of overlapping primary and secondary impact crater populations in restricted crater diameter ranges. The approach to this problem is illustrated with a simple model production function where the secondary crater input is artificially enhanced. Extrapolation of such a secondary crater model distribution to a global record results in extraordinarily high crater frequencies that do not exist on Mars, and implies the need of detailed studies of the size-frequency distribution for remote secondary craters, to date poorly known. A key case, the martian crater Zunil and its secondary crater field, illustrate that reasonable predictions for the secondary crater size-frequency distribution at small (<100 m) crater diameters affected the standard model crater retention age for the Cerberus plains less than the statistical uncertainty. These observations show that age determination based on appropriate crater counting statistics is valid in a wide primary crater diameter range.  相似文献

The two neighboring Suvasvesi North and South impact structures in central‐east Finland have been discussed as a possible impact crater doublet produced by the impact of a binary asteroid. This study presents 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic data for impact melt rocks recovered from the drilling into the center of the Suvasvesi North impact structure and melt rock from glacially transported boulders linked to Suvasvesi South. 40Ar/39Ar step‐heating analysis yielded two essentially flat age spectra indicating a Late Cretaceous age of ~85 Ma for the Suvasvesi North melt rock, whereas the Suvasvesi South melt sample gave a Neoproterozoic minimum (alteration) age of ~710 Ma. Although the statistical likelihood for two independent meteorite strikes in close proximity to each other is rather low, the remarkable difference in 40Ar/39Ar ages of >600 Myr for the two Suvasvesi impact melt samples is interpreted as evidence for two temporally separate, but geographically closely spaced, impacts into the Fennoscandian Shield. The Suvasvesi North and South impact structures are, thus, interpreted as a “false” crater doublet, similar to the larger East and West Clearwater Lake impact structures in Québec, Canada, recently shown to be unrelated. Our findings have implications for the reliable recognition of impact crater doublets and the apparent rate of binary asteroid impacts on Earth and other planetary bodies in the inner solar system.  相似文献

We report sensitive Chandra X-ray non-detections of two unusual, luminous Iron Low-Ionization Broad Absorption Line Quasars (FeLoBALs). The observations do detect a non-BAL, wide-binary companion quasar to one of the FeLoBAL quasars. We combine X-ray-derived column density lower limits (assuming solar metallicity) with column densities measured from ultraviolet spectra and CLOUDY photoionization simulations to explore whether constant-density slabs at broad-line region densities can match the physical parameters of these two BAL outflows, and find that they cannot. In the “overlapping-trough” object SDSS J0300+0048, we measure the column density of the X-ray absorbing gas to be NH ? 1.8 × 1024 cm?2. From the presence of Fe ii UV78 absorption but lack of Fe ii UV195/UV196 absorption, we infer the density in that part of the absorbing region to be ne ? 106 cm?3. We do find that a slab of gas at that density might be able to explain this object’s absorption. In the Fe iii-dominant object SDSS J2215–0045, the X-ray absorbing column density of NH ? 3.4 × 1024 cm?2 is consistent with the Fe iii-derived NH ? 2 × 1022 cm?2 provided the ionization parameter is log U > 1.0 for both the ne = 1011 cm?3 and ne = 1012 cm?3 scenarios considered (such densities are required to produce Fe iii absorption without Fe iiabsorption). However, the velocity width of the absorption rules out its being concentrated in a single slab at these densities. Instead, this object’s spectrum can be explained by a low density, high ionization and high temperature disk wind that encounters and ablates higher density, lower ionization Fe iii-emitting clumps.  相似文献
