This contribution constitutes a new study using magnetic parameters and trace element determinations of pollutants in river sediments from the Tamil Nadu state. The Vellar River covers a total length of about 200 km and flows into the Bay of Bengal. Sediment samples were collected at different sediment depths (up to 90 cm) from 12 sites to investigate their magnetic properties (27 samples) and the contents of trace elements (21 out of 27 samples) along the river; as well as to perform magnetic studies for various grain size fractions (16 sub samples). The magnetic results of magnetic susceptibility and remanent magnetizations suggest that the magnetic signal of these sediments is controlled by ferrimagnetic minerals magnetite-like minerals and a minor contribution of antiferromagnetic carriers (such as hematite minerals). Detailed studies of selected samples showed a higher magnetic concentration in finer grain-sized fractions and a slightly different magnetic mineralogy. Magnetic concentration-dependent parameters evidenced high values, which, together with the background values, allowed us to identify magnetic enhancement at some sites. The Pearson correlation and multivariate statistical studies (Principal Component Analysis, Canonical Correlation Analysis) supported the relationship between the magnetic and chemical variables; in particular, magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic and isothermal remanent magnetization are closely correlated to Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, V, Zn, and the pollution load index. In addition, Principal Coordinate Analysis and fuzzy C-means cluster analysis allowed us to make a classification and to perform a magnetic-chemical characterization of the data into four groups, thereby identifying critical (possibly polluted) sites from the Vellar River.  相似文献

In this work, we carried out a preliminary study of traffic-derived pollutants from primary sources (vehicles), and on roads (paved area), road borders and surroundings areas. The study is focussed on the identification, distribution and concentration of pollutants and magnetic carriers. Magnetic parameters and their analyses suggest that the magnetic signal of vehicle-derived emissions is controlled by a magnetite-like phase. Magnetic grain size estimations reveal the presence of fine particles (0.1–5 μm) that can be inhaled and therefore are dangerous to human health. Magnetic susceptibility results (about 175 × 10−5 SI) show a higher magnetic concentration — magnetic enhancement — in the central area of the tollbooth line that is related to higher traffic. In addition, magnetic susceptibility was computed on several roadside soils along a length of 120 km and used to generate a 2-D contour map, which shows higher magnetic values (100–200 10−5 SI) near the edge of the road. The observed distribution of magnetic values indicates that magnetic particles emitted by vehicles are accumulated and mainly concentrated within a distance of several meters (1–2 m) from the edge of the road. In consequence, the magnetic susceptibility parameter seems to be a suitable indicator of traffic-related pollution. Non-magnetic studies show an enrichment of some trace elements, such as Ba, Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb, that are associated with traffic pollution. Furthermore, statistical correlations between the content of toxic trace metals and magnetic variables support the use of magnetic parameters as potential proxies for traffic-related pollution in this study area.  相似文献

Summary. A sequence of 167 glacial varves from Itu, State of São Paulo (Brazil), has been sampled for palaeomagnetic analysis. Since the varve thicknesses permit individual measurements, an attempt was made to compare annual palaeomagnetic results with recent observatory data. Inclination and declination plots show larger variations than those displayed by the present geomagnetic field. This could, however, be due to sedimentation factors since it may be assumed that the pattern of the present geomagnetic field variations is not greatly different from that of the Permocarboniferous field. In the next paper (Ernesto & Pacca) the experimental data are submitted to spectral analysis and the results support some of the hypotheses raised in this work.  相似文献

We present results of paleomagnetic and sedimentological studies carried out on three cores Lmor1, Lmo98-1, Lmor98-2 from bottom sediments of Lake Moreno (south-western Argentina), and integrate them with data from our previous studies. Measurements of directions (declination D and inclination I) and mass specific intensity of natural remanent magnetization (NRM intensity), magnetic susceptibility (specific, χ and volumetric, κ), isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), saturation of isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), and back field remanent coercivity (B0CR) were performed. The stability of the NRM was investigated using alternating-field demagnetization. The results show that these sediments meet the criteria required to construct a reliable paleomagnetic record. The cores were correlated very well based on magnetic parameters, such as χ and NRM intensity, as well as with lithological features. Tephra layers were identified from the lithological profiles and magnetic susceptibility logs. We obtained the D and I logs of the characteristic remanent magnetization for the cores as a function of shortened depth. The data from the three cores were combined to form a composite record using the Fisher method. A comparison between stacked inclination and declination records of Lake Moreno and those obtained in previous works on Lake Escondido and Lake El Trébol shows good agreement. This agreement made it possible to transform the stacked curves into time series spanning the interval 12–20 kyr. The results obtained improved our knowledge of SV and the behaviour of the geomagnetic field and also allowed us to determine the range of past inclination variations from −70° to −45° for the southern hemisphere, where data are scarce.  相似文献

High-resolution paleo- and rock magnetic studies were performed on a group of four sediment cores from Laguna Potrok Aike (Santa Cruz, Argentina) representing the time period AD 1300–2000. The rock magnetic analyses show that the main magnetic mineral is (titano)magnetite with a concentration between 0.01 and 0.08%, and a grain size of 4–15 μm. This study is helpful in order to complete the paleosecular variation (PSV) and paleointensity type curves for South America which do not have a detailed record for the last millennium. The comparison with the study carried out for Lake El Trébol shows a very good agreement, supporting that PSV records of south-western Argentina can be developed into a stratigraphic correlation tool on a regional scale.  相似文献

The Ponnaiyar River is one of the largest rivers of the Tamil Nadu state (India), flowing a distance of 430 km from its point of origin to the sea. This work contributes with new data of magnetic and elemental composition of river sediments, and improves the knowledge obtained by preliminary and previous studies of rivers from Southeastern India. Magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic and isothermal remanent magnetization and chemical determinations (major and trace metals) were measured. Magnetic results reveal the predominance of magnetite-like mineral with magnetic grain size variations along the river and in depth. Most of the uppermost samples have the major presence of trace metals and higher values of magnetic concentration. Magnetic and chemical variables were also analysed as potential pollution indicators using multivariate statistical techniques: canonical correlation and fuzzy c-means clustering analyses, which confirmed the existence of relationships, but not in a simple way, between magnetic and chemical variables. Furthermore, fuzzy analysis allows classifying the data in different well-differentiated groups regarding the trace metal load, concentration and feature-dependent parameters. The most polluted samples show high concentration of trace elements and magnetic carriers, softer and coarser magnetic minerals; on the contrary, the unpolluted samples (from the deepest sediments) have the opposite characteristics.  相似文献

Previous magnetic and geochemical studies of stream sediments in the Northeast of Buenos Aires Province, in the Greater La Plata area, have revealed a high level of trace elements, especially lead and zinc. Continuing these preliminary works, new sampling sites were considered in order to improve and increase the magnetic mapping of this area. This part of the study focuses especially on the magnetic properties of sediments from a cross-city stream. Such stream receives a variable pollutant load from urban, industrial and diffuse sources.Concentration-dependent magnetic parameters, magnetic carriers (para, anti and ferrimagnetic) and their features (e.g. softer or harder magnetic carrier, grain size distribution, etc.) have been calculated using magnetic measurements. According to magnetic parameters and heavy metal loads two main distinctive groups of sediment-cores are distinguished. The vertical distribution of sediments reveals a recent anthropogenic influence, possibly, belonging to the last 20-40 years.Four out of all the magnetic parameters (magnetic susceptibility, anhysteric remanent magnetisation, S-ratio and ARM/) were chosen in order to investigate their relationship with contents of heavy metals. In all the cases, good positive correlations were obtained using linear regression. However, more significant correlation factors were achieved for grain size and magnetic feature-dependent parameters ( ARM/ and S-ratio) than for magnetic concentration-dependent parameters. Therefore, the ARM/ and the S-ratio seem to be the most relevant magnetic parameters to describe the vertical and longitudinal distribution of heavy metals present in these stream sediments. The non-significant relationship between heavy metals and concentration-dependent parameters could be explained taking into account the discrimination of the two distinctive groups. The group belonging to the Coastal Plain shows a clear linear trend between heavy metals and magnetic susceptibility and anhysteric remanent magnetisation.  相似文献

A wide urban area in the Northeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina) is exposed to anthropogenic influence, mainly due to industrial and urban activity. In this area two streams were chosen, Del Gato and El Pescado streams. They have similar characteristics, although the first one runs through the built-up area and the other one through a rural area; consequently, Del Gato stream has a higher input of pollutants (fluvial effluents, fly ashes, solid wastes, etc.) than El Pescado stream.Magnetic measurements and geochemical studies were carried out on five sediment cores taken out from both streams with the aim of establishing a link between concentration of ferrimagnetic materials and contents of heavy metals. In order to investigate concentration of magnetic carriers and its intrinsic features (present magnetic minerals and grain size distribution) several magnetic parameters were measured and relations between them were analyzed. The magnetic characteristics for both sites indicate the presence of magnetically soft minerals in both streams, predominantly in Del Gato stream and with the additional presence of relatively hard minerals in El Pescado stream. Besides, a higher concentration of secondary ferrimagnetic minerals was found in Del Gato stream than in El Pescado stream.Chemical studies show (in some cases) a high concentration of some heavy metals (lead, copper, zinc, nickel and iron) on the upper 22 cm. Magnetic parameters, especially anhysteric remanent magnetization and contents of some heavy metals, showed a very good correlation.  相似文献

Rock-magnetic techniques have become a useful tool in environmental issues; in particular, magnetic studies constitute an alternative way to study pollution in different media. The present contribution focuses on magnetic parameters as pollution indicators, especially from their relationship with contents of heavy metals. The work was carried out in two Indian rivers located in Tamil Nadu, southern India. Several sediment samples were collected and studied in the laboratory using magnetic techniques, magnetic susceptibility, anhysteric remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization, and chemical techniques to determine contents of heavy metals. Magnetic mineralogy indicates the predominance of ferrimagnetic minerals; although magnetite-like minerals are the main magnetic carriers, antiferromagnetic minerals can be present as subordinate carriers. Concentration-dependent magnetic parameters revealed noticeable differences between both rivers, e.g. magnetic susceptibility is four times higher in Cauvery than in Palaru River. Moreover, such increase can be interpreted as “magnetic enhancement” and therefore related to the pollution status. This magnetic enhancement indicated a different pollutant contribution in both rivers, and also, a different spatial distribution along these rivers, where critical (or more polluted) sites were identified. On the other hand, univariate and multivariate statistical analyses—e.g. PCoordA, Multifactorial Analysis of distance, PCA and RDA—were examined, revealing a link between magnetic and chemical variables. Among magnetic parameters, the concentration-dependent magnetic parameters (e.g. magnetic susceptibility) seem to be the most relevant for this study.  相似文献

The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the possibility of applying one geophysical method to studying untraditional systems as is the case with Portland-cement-based materials. The research demonstrates how conventional paleomagnetic methodology can be employed in studying the mode of magnetic recording in present-day industrial materials. Portland-cement admixtures such as fly ashes and furnace slags should be discriminated, because those particles interact in soils and sediments in nature. Moreover, a better undertanding of magnetic remanent acquisition in model materials can serve to improve the interpretation of magnetic remanent acquisition in natural rocks formed a long time ago. The magnetic constituents of Portland-cement paste and mortar acquire a magnetic remanence due to their alignment with the earth's magnetic field at the casting place. This magnetization can be measured using ordinary paleomagnetic techniques. The alignment of the individual magnetic particles accounts for the intensity of the magnetic remanence, which can be increased by adding water and by vibration before setting and hardening. Blast furnace slag admixtures also add to the enhancement of the intensity of remanence. The magnetization of Portland-cement-based materials shows a near linear relationship with the water /cement (w/c) ratios employed in the experimental work; the w/c ratios range between 0.2 – 0.6 in pastes and 0.3 – 0.6 in mortar. Stable remanent magnetization was obtained during the first seven days of setting and hardening, a period necessary for magnetic particles to become locked parallel to the earth's magnetic field. The stability of magnetic remanence predicts the usefulness of the methodology in studying the properties of Portland cement and particularly in the control of iron-bearing admixtures.  相似文献
