A three-dimensional finite-difference multilevel hydrodynamic model is developed using an explicit scheme on a staggered grid. The model has been tested against four cases, namely (i) wind-induced circulation (ii) density-driven circulation (iii) seiche oscillation in a closed basin and (iv) tide-induced circulation in a open channel. The results obtained in the present study compare well with those obtained from the corresponding analytical solutions under idealised conditions for the above four cases. The model was also tested against the case of circulation induced by wind and Coriolis force and the results obtained are compared with the results of Davies and Owen (1979). 相似文献

Exploration for placer deposits involves heavy and opaque mineral data that are conventionally obtained using toxic and expensive chemicals and time-consuming and tedious microscopic counting of a large number of grains. In this investigation, we have used rock magnetic properties to obtain estimates of heavy and opaque mineral contents of placers from the SW coast of India. Magnetic susceptibility and other magnetic properties show strong correlations with heavy and opaque (r > 0.87 andr > 0.94; significant at the 1% level) mineral contents. As one or more types of magnetic minerals are invariably present in placers, magnetic properties may be used as a proxy for heavy and opaque mineral contents. This simple, rapid, inexpensive, and nondestructive method may be adopted by those involved in placer exploration to rapidly scan a large number of samples and delineate economically important pockets for more detailed investigations. This method saves considerable time and tedium. Using magnetic properties, rather than radioactivity, as a proxy for heavy and opaque mineral contents is more advantageous because one or more magnetic minerals are always present, but a radioactive mineral may not always be present in placers. An important limitation is that the ratio of magnetic to heavy/opaque mineral contents should not vary widely. 相似文献

Marine bacteria, actinomycetes and fungal strains were isolated from continental slope sediment of the Bay of Bengal and studied
for fatty acid profile to investigate their involvement in the benthic food-web. Fifteen different saturated and unsaturated
fatty acids from bacterial isolates, 14 from actinomycetes and fungal isolates were detected. The total unsaturated fatty
acids in bacterial isolates ranged from 11.85 to 37.26%, while the saturated fatty acid ranged between 42.34 and 80.74%. In
actinomycetes isolates, total unsaturated fatty acids varied from 27.86 to 38.85% and saturated fatty acids ranged from 35.29
to 51.25%. In fungal isolates unsaturated fatty acids ranged between 44.62 and 65.52% while saturated FA ranged from 20.80
to 46.30%. The higher percentages of unsaturated fatty acids from the microbial isolates are helpful in anticipating the active

We have taken a plasma model of ionosphere which is quite different from the earlier model employed by several workers to study the whistler as a diagnostic technique in the ionosphere. In contrast to the earlier model, we have considered an ionosphere that includes negative ionic species and due to which the mathematical technique loses the basic assumptions chosen earlier to derive the group travel time. We have shown that the negative ion has a significant role and without its contribution, the method to diagnose the ionospheric parameters may lead to an error. We have discussed also how to uset()=

In northern regions, river ice‐ jam flooding can be more severe than open‐water flooding causing property and infrastructure damages, loss of human life and adverse impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Very little has been performed to assess the risk induced by ice‐related floods because most risk assessments are limited to open‐water floods. The specific objective of this study is to incorporate ice‐jam numerical modelling tools (e.g. RIVICE, Monte‐Carlo simulation) into flood hazard and risk assessment along the Peace River at the Town of Peace River (TPR) in Alberta, Canada. Adequate historical data for different ice‐jam and open‐water flooding events were available for this study site and were useful in developing ice‐affected stage‐frequency curves. These curves were then applied to calibrate a numerical hydraulic model, which simulated different ice jams and flood scenarios along the Peace River at the TPR. A Monte‐Carlo analysis was then carried out to acquire an ensemble of water level profiles to determine the 1 : 100‐year and 1 : 200‐year annual exceedance probability flood stages for the TPR. These flood stages were then used to map flood hazard and vulnerability of the TPR. Finally, the flood risk for a 200‐year return period was calculated to be an average of $32/m2/a ($/m2/a corresponds to a unit of annual expected damages or risk). This study explores the potential for predicting the spatial variation in subsurface water level change with crop growth stage from satellite data in Thabua Irrigation Project, situated in the northern central region of Thailand. The relationship between subsurface water level change from pumping water to irrigate rice in the dry season and the age of the rice was analysed. The spatial model of subsurface water level change was developed from the classification using greenness or (normalized difference vegetation index NDVI) derived from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper data. The NDVI of 52 rice fields was employed to assess its relationship to the age of the rice. It was found that NDVI and rice age have a good correlation (R2 = 0·73). The low NDVI values (−0·059 to 0·082) in these fields were related to the young rice stage (0–30 days). NDVI and subsurface water level change were also correlated in this study and found to have a high correlation (Water level change (m day−1) = 0·3442 × NDVI − 0·0372; R2 = 0·96). From this model, the water level change caused by rice at different growth stages was derived. This was used to show the spatial variation of water level change in the project during the 1998–99 dry‐season cropping. This simple method of using NDVI relationships with water level change and crop growth stages proves to be useful in determining the areas prone to excessive lowering of the subsurface water level during the dry season. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) introduces solute and nutrients to the global oceans, resulting in considerable nutrient cycling and dynamics in the coastal areas. We have conducted high‐resolution, spatio‐temporal, lunar tidal cycle patterns and variability of discharged solute/nutrient assessment to get an overview of seasonal nutrient flux to the Bay of Bengal in eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent. Whereas the premonsoon season SGD was found to be dominant in the marine influence (M‐SGD), the postmonsoon season was found to be predominated by the terrestrial component of SGD (T‐SGD), extending from coast to near offshore. The solute fluxes and redox transformation were found to be extensively influenced by tidal and diurnal cycles, overlapping on seasonal patterns. We have assessed the possible role of SGD‐associated solute/nutrient fluxes and their discharge mechanisms, and their associated temporal distributions have severe implications on the biological productivity of the Bay of Bengal. The estimated annual solute fluxes, using the average end‐member concentration of the SGD‐associated nutrients, were found to be 240 and 224 mM·m?2·day?1 for NO3? and Fetot, respectively. Together with huge freshwater flux from the Himalayan and Peninsular Indian rivers, the SGD has considerable influence on the bay water circulation, stratification, and solute cycling. Thus, the observation from this study implies that SGD‐associated nutrient flux to the Bay of Bengal may function as a nutrient sink, which might influence the long‐term solute/nutrient flux along the eastern coast of India. 相似文献
