In late December 1991, an accidental release of 5,700 CI of tritiated water (HTO) from the Savannah River Site was transported
via site streams into the Savannah River where it was carried downstream to the coastal zone. HTO released into a semitropical
Georgia estuary was forced into the tidal marshes surrounding the estuary as well as discharged directly into the Atlantic
Ocean. The spreading of HTO was studied with a 3D hydrodynamic model (ALGE) that includes flooding and draining of intertidal
areas. Comparisons of model simulations to measured HTO concentration showed that ALGE simulated well the general increase
and decrease of HTO as its plume passed a given area. The “sheet flow” approximation for marsh and small tidal creek flow
largely compensated for lack of model resolution and accurate bathymetry in areas with numerous small to medium-sized tidal
creeks. The water volume of the unresolved tidal creeks had to be accounted for in the simulations by increasing the initial
water depth over the marshes. ALGE and a simple box model both reproduced the trapping of HTO in intertidal areas. The time
scale over which intertidal areas import and export HTO back to the tidal channels varies between 10 and 30 days. 相似文献

Possible changes in the area inhabited by the ticks Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus, the main transmitters of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease in Russia, caused by temperature changes in 1976–2005
compared to 1946–1975 are discussed. It is shown that these changes could result in some areal expansion of these species.
In the European part of Russia, I. ricinus expanded its areal boundaries to the east 100–300 km. I. persulcatus expanded its areal in the Asian part of Russia. Its boundary moved to the north and northeast 100–300 km. Areal expansion

We analyze observations of the compact GHZ-peaked-spectrum radio source in the nucleus of the weakly active galaxy NGC 1052,
assuming that the low-frequency turnover in its spectrum is due to synchrotron self-absorption. The analysis is based on a
model for an inhomogeneous source of synchrotron radiation. It is shown that the magnetic field is not uniform, but the change
in the field strength from the center to the edge of the compact radio source does not exceed an order of magnitude. The maximum
magnetic-field strength in the nucleus of NGC 1052 is 20 G < H
⊥ < 200 G, and the density of relativistic electrons is 0.018 cm−3 < n
e
< 0.18 cm−3 on scales of 0.1 pc; everywhere in the radio source, the energy density of the magnetic field exceeds the energy density
of the relativistic electrons. The physical conditions are similar to those in the nuclei of the nearby radio galaxies 3C
111 and 3C 465, and differ strongly from those in the nucleus of the radio galaxy 0108+388, which is a compact GHz-peaked-spectrum

The REE distribution patterns and Nd whole-rock and mineral isotope ratios of the Kingash ultramafic-mafic massif enabled
us to propose a multistage history for its evolution at 1410 and 875 Ma. These stages reflect the magmatic evolution of the
Siberian paleocontinent margin during the Late Precambrian. The age of metamorphism of the massif during collision and accretion
in the Early Paleozoic (∼500 Ma) was obtained based on a Sm-Nd mineral isochron from rheomorphic veined albitite. The Nd and
Sr isotopic compositions of rocks from the Kingash massif suggest mantle sources for picritic and basic magmas, which are
thought to have originated by mixing of different proportions of depleted (PREMA or DM) and enriched (EM) melts. The initial

Life and depositional environments in the sublittoral zone of Lake Pannon, a large, brackish Paratethyan lake from the Late
Miocene, were reconstructed from fossils and facies of the Szák Formation. This formation is exposed in several, roughly coeval
(9.4–8.9 Ma) outcrops, located along strike of the paleo-shelf-break in northwestern Hungary. The silty argillaceous marl
of the formation was deposited below storm wave base, at 20–30 to 80–90 m water depth. The abundance of benthic organisms
indicates that the bottom water was usually well oxygenated. Interstitial dysoxia, however, may have occurred immediately
below the sediment–water interface, as evidenced by occasional preservation of trace fossils such as Diplocraterion. The fauna comprised endemic mollusks, including brackish cockles of the subfamily Lymnocardiinae, dreissenid mussels (Congeria), and highly adapted, uniquely large-sized deep-water pulmonate snails (planorbids and lymnaeids). Ostracods were dominated
by endemic species and, in some cases, endemic genera of candonids, leptocytherids, cypridids, and loxoconchids. Fish remnants
include a sciaenid otolith and the oldest skeletal occurrence of Perca in Europe. The phytoplankton comprised exclusively endemic coccolithophorids, mostly endemic dinoflagellates (prevailingly
Spiniferites), and cosmopolitan green algae. The Late Miocene fauna and flora of Lake Pannon were in many ways similar to the modern Caspian

Mesozoic rift basins locally bounding metamorphic core complexes have been recognized in Transbaikalia and northern China.
Numerous basement outcrops located between these two regions, in eastern Mongolia, are considered as pre-Palaeozoic in age.
One of these, the Ereendavaa Range, appears as a gneissic core marked by amphibolite-facies metamorphic conditions. The range
is overlain to the NW by the unmetamorphosed Mesozoic Onon Basin. Below the basin, the upper part of the range consists of
a gently NW-dipping shear zone associated with top-to-the-NW motion. The structural pattern is consistent with syn-extensional
exhumation of the range. Preliminary geochronological data indicate that the shear zone is late Jurassic to early Cretaceous
in age, coeval with the Onon Basin. These new data from eastern Mongolia constitute a link between Transbaikalia and northern
China, indicating that NW–SE extensional Mesozoic tectonics occurred throughout the entire region. 相似文献

We study earthquake-induced soft-sediment deformation (seismites) in reference Quaternary sections of southeastern Altai. Sediments in the sections bear signature of liquefaction and fluidization and deformation is localized in thin (few centimeters to 0.5–1.0 m) continuously striking and frequently repeated layers sandwiched between undeformed sediments. The soft-sediment deformation records coseismic motion of different slip geometries. Seismic origin is also inferred for layers and lenses of coarse colluvium slid into the lake bottom from the slopes, which intrude plane-bedded silt and sand and vary in thickness from a few centimeters to one meter. The occurrence of seismic soft-sediment deformation at different stratigraphic levels of the Quaternary and in the Upper Pliocene Beken Formation confirms the high seismicity of southeastern Altai in Quaternary time. 相似文献

New data on soft-sediment deformation in Late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of the northwestern Kola Peninsula (Pechenga River valley) are reported and analyzed in terms of paleoseismicity implications. Soft-sediment deformation is assigned to paleoseismic triggers on the basis of special criteria. One sedimentary section in the Pechenga valley bears signature of several seismic events at the Late Pleistocene–Holocene boundary, constrained by radiocarbon dates. According to the morphology, sizes, and types of seismites, the earthquakes had an MSK-64 intensity at least VI–VII. The observed earthquake-induced deformation may be associated with tectonic subsidence of the Pechenga valley block. 相似文献

The magnetic fractions of ilmenite from the beach placer deposit of Chavara, southwest India have been studied for mineralogical and chemical composition to assess the range of their physical and chemical variations with weathering. Chavara deposit represents a highly weathered and relatively homogenous concentration. Significant variation in composition has been documented with alteration. The most magnetic of the fractions of ilmenite, separated at 0.15 Å, and with a susceptibility of 3.2 × 10?6 m3 kg?1, indicates the presence of haematite–ilmenite intergrowth. An iron-poor, titanium-rich component of the ilmenite ore has been identified from among the magnetic fractions of the Chavara ilmenite albeit with an undesirably high Nb2O5 (0.28%), Cr2O3 (0.23%) and Th (149 ppm) contents. The ilmenite from Chavara is compared with that from the nearby Manavalakurichi deposit of similar geological setting and provenance. The lower ferrous iron oxide (2.32–14.22%) and higher TiO2 (56.31–66.45%) contents highlight the advanced state of alteration of Chavara. This is also evidenced by the relatively higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio compared to Manavalakurichi ilmenite. In fact, the ilmenite has significantly been converted to pseudorutile/leucoxene. 相似文献

In order to better understand the Mesozoic tectonic evolution of Southeast China Block (SECB in short), this paper describes geological features of Mesozoic basins that are widely distributed in the SECB. The analyzed data are derived from a regional geological investigation on various Mesozoic basins and a recently compiled 1:1,500,000 geological map of Mesozoic–Cenozoic basins. Two types of basin are distinguished according to their tectonic settings, namely, the post-orogenic basin (Type I) and the intracontinental extensional basin (Type II); the latter includes the graben and the half-graben or faulted-depression basins. Our studies suggest that the formation of these basins connects with the evolution of geotectonics of the SECB. The post-orogenic basin (Type I) was formed in areas from the piedmont to the intraland during the interval from Late Triassic to Early Jurassic; and the formation of the intracontinental extensional basin (Type II) connects with an intracontinental crustal thinning setting in the Late Mesozoic. The graben basin was generated during the Middle Jurassic and is associated with a bimodal volcanic eruption; and the half-graben or faulted-depression basin, filled mainly by the rhyolite, tuff and sedimentary rocks during Early Cretaceous, is occupied by the Late Cretaceous–Paleogene red-colored terrestrial clastic rocks. We noticed that the modern outcrops of numerous granites and basins occur in a similar level, and the Mesozoic granitic bodies contact with the adjacent basins by large normal faults, suggesting that the modern landforms between granites and basins were yielded by the late crustal movement. The modern basin and range framework was settled down in the Cretaceous. Abundant sedimentary structures are found in the various basins, from that the deposited environments and paleo-currents are concluded; during the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic time, the source areas were situated to the north and northeast sides of the outcrop region. In this paper, we present the study results on one geological and geographical separating unit and two separating fault zones. The Wuyi orogenic belt is a Late Mesozoic paleo-geographically separating unit, the Ganjiang fault zone behaves as the western boundary of Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks, and the Zhenghe–Dapu fault zone separates the SE-China Coastal Late Mesozoic volcanic-sedimentary basins and the Wuyi orogenic belt. Finally, we discuss the geodynamic mechanisms forming various basins, proposing a three-stage model of the Mesozoic sedimentary evolution. 相似文献
