We calculated the temperature response of the 171 Å passbands of the Sun Watcher using APS detectors and image Processing (SWAP) instrument onboard the PRoject for OnBoard Autonomy 2 (PROBA2) satellite. These results were compared to the temperature responses of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE), the twin Extreme Ultraviolet Imagers (EUVI) onboard the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) A and B spacecraft, and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Multiplying the wavelength-response functions for each instrument by a series of isothermal synthetic spectra and integrating over the range 165?–?195 Å produced temperature-response functions for the six instruments. Each temperature response was then multiplied by sample differential emission-measure functions for four different solar conditions. For any given plasma condition (e.g. quiet Sun, active region), it was found that the overall variation with temperature agreed remarkably well across the six instruments, although the wavelength responses for each instrument have some distinctly different features. Deviations were observed, however, when we compared the response of any one instrument to different solar conditions, particularly for the case of solar flares.  相似文献

Given the failure of existing models for redshift-space distortions to provide a highly accurate measure of the β -parameter, and the ability of forthcoming surveys to obtain data with very low random errors, it becomes necessary to develop better models for these distortions. Here we review the failures of the commonly used velocity dispersion models and present an empirical method for extracting β from the quadrupole statistic that has little systematic offset over a wide range of β and cosmologies. This empirical model is then applied to an ensemble of mock 2dF southern strip surveys, to illustrate the technique and see how accurately we can recover the true value of β . We compare this treatment with the error we expect to find caused only by the finite volume of the survey. We find that non-linear effects reduce the range of scales over which β can be fitted, and introduce covariances between nearby modes in addition to those introduced by the convolution with the survey window function. The result is that we are only able to constrain β to a 1 σ accuracy of 25 per cent ( β =0.55±0.14 for the cosmological model considered). We explore one possible means of reducing this error, that of cluster collapse, and show that accurate application of this method can greatly reduce the effect of non-linearities, improving the determination of β . We conclude by demonstrating that, when the contaminating effects of clusters are dealt with, this simple analysis of the full 2dF survey yields β =0.55±0.04. For this model, this represents a determination of β to an accuracy of 8 per cent and hence an important constraint on the cosmological density parameter Ω0.  相似文献

The contribution of rain-on-snow (ROS) events to NO3-N levels in stream water has received relatively little research attention. However, individual ROS events during January and February contributed up to 40% of annual NO3-N export from a forested catchment in south-central Ontario between 1980 and 2000, but comprised less than 10% of annual precipitation. Nitrate-N concentrations in stream water increased rapidly following ROS events, and were similar to the concentrations in incident rainfall and the accumulated snow pack, likely due to limited contact of runoff with mineral soil under snow cover and low winter biological activity. Increased NO3-N associated with ROS events resulted in substantial depressions in stream pH and alkalinity, which may delay the biological recovery from acidification. The contribution of ROS events to annual or winter NO3-N export has been generally greater in recent years, although there is a considerable year-to-year variation. As a result, ROS events contribute to inter-annual variability in stream NO3-N concentrations and will have a strong effect on apparent temporal trends. The contribution of ROS events to annual NO3-N export should be considered when assessing surface water recovery from acidification and the N-status of forests, particularly if climate change projections for winter warming result in a greater proportion of winter precipitation occurring as rain.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications are increasingly utilized for modelling complex flow patterns in natural streams and rivers. Although CFD has been successfully implemented to model many complex flow situations in natural stream settings, adequately characterizing the effects of gravel and cobble beds on flow hydraulics in CFD is a difficult challenge due to the scale of roughness lengths and the inadequacy of traditional roughness representations to characterize flow profiles in situations with large roughness elements. An alternative method of representing gravel and cobble beds is presented. Appropriate drag forces associated with different grain sizes are computed and included in the momentum equations to account for the influence of a hydraulically rough bed. Comparisons with field measurements reveal reasonable agreement between measured and modelled profiles of spatially averaged velocity and turbulent kinetic energy, and model fidelity to the non‐logarithmic behaviour of the velocity profiles. The novel method of representing coarse beds expands the utility of CFD for investigating physical processes in natural channels with large bed roughness. Nine weeks field work was completed during two trips in January/February and March/ April 2003 to investigate the distribution and abundance of New Zealand sea lion Phocarctos hookeri pups at Campbell Island. A total of 161 pups were tagged and a further 138 dead pups were found. A closed mark‐recapture model was used to estimate the total number of live pups (e.g., tagged plus untagged pups) at Campbell Island in April as 247 (SE = 28, 95% CI 198–308). Pup production at Campbell Island is estimated at 385, which comprises 13% of the total pup production for the species in the 2003 season. This is the first robust estimate of pup production for New Zealand sea lions at Campbell Island. The figure of 385 pups is considerably higher than any of the previous estimates reported from Campbell Island. The high level of pup mortality (36%) at Campbell Island for approximately the first 2 months after birth is higher than the 17% reported for the Auckland Islands for approximately the same period in 2003, but is similar to unusually high levels of mortality (20–30%) reported at the Auckland Islands in recent years. It was not possible to determine the cause of death of the 138 dead pups owing to scavenging and decomposition. Pups were found over the whole Island, with the exception of its northern end. Male pups were significantly heavier and faster growing than female pups over the same period.  相似文献
