Changes in surface air temperature during the last century are widely discussed among researches in the field of climate change. This paper measures the variability of annual surface air temperature of five major cities of Pakistan (Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad and Karachi) for the period from 1882 to 2003. We perform an exploratory analysis which shows that the annual landmass air temperature series of five relatively more important climate stations of Pakistan obey the normal distribution. A subsequent trend analysis shows that the temperature has been increasing in the twentieth century for the five (major) cities of Pakistan, the increase being 0.3°C to 1.0°C. We computations based on Bayesian analysis for two samples (e.g., for Lahore, we use data for the period from 1882 to 1960 and 1961–2000 for first sample and second sample, respectively) of temperature data of five cites shows that the average of annual mean temperature for the second period is higher than the average of first period. Thus, Bayesian inferencing shows that the general pattern of evolution of temperature over Pakistan is pretty similar to the current global warming configuration. 相似文献

The North Pacific Oscillation: observations compared with simulations in a general circulation model
The study of the sea level pressure and the surface air temperatures in the North Pacific region in a 23-year integration of the Oregon State University coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model has shown that there is a signature of the North Pacific Oscillation in the model, comparable to that recorded in observations. In the model, the NPO index was defined in terms of an opposition in sign of mean temperature anomaly between two regions in the North Pacific region, close to those found in observations (viz. Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and Edmonton, Canada). Fluctuations of this index prompted the grouping of some of the 23 model years as those when the temperature at the model equivalent of Dutch Harbor was above normal and that at the model equivalent of Edmonton below normal (analogous to Aleutian above in observations), while other years displayed the opposite scenario (Aleutian below). Composites of sea level pressure, surface air temperatures, precipitation and sea surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere were found to be at times strikingly similar to those documented in observations by Rogers. 相似文献

Several studies demonstrate that North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has dominant influence on the variability of climate over Southwest Asia. We deconstruct the NAO into its two components, the Azores High and the Icelandic Low. Regional circulations are influenced by changes not only in the pressure but also the positions of the Azores High and the Icelandic Low. The results presented in this paper exhibit that significantly great portions of interannual variance of winter precipitation over Indo-Pak Region (consists of Northeast Pakistan and Northwest India) can be explained by including the contributions of the Icelandic Low pressure in addition to ENSO and AO. This contribution also explains the physical mechanisms to establish the relationships between the COA and regional climate by examining composite maps of large-scale circulation fields using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. 相似文献

Multi-day rainfall events are an important cause of recent severe flooding in Pakistan, and any change in the magnitude of such events may have severe impact upon urban structures such as dams, urban drainage systems, and flood. This article uses statistical distributions to define extremes of annual rainfall of different cities of Punjab (Lahore, Murree, Sialkot, and Jhelum) with given return periods. Our calculations suggest that general extreme value is the best-fitted distribution for the extreme annual rainfall of different cities of Punjab. Our calculations show that different cities of Punjab have 5 years return period for receiving more than 100 mm daily rainfall. While they have 30 years return period for receiving more than 200 mm daily rainfall. This asks for construction of new dams in Pakistan. 相似文献

This study deals with a detailed geochemical characterization of three crude oils from the Upper Indus Basin, Punjab, Pakistan.
The samples were obtained from three productive oil fields of the Datta Formation (Jurassic), Lochhart (Palaeocene) and the
Dhak Pass zone (Palaeocene). The GC parameters for and the bulk properties of Datta Formation oils are essentially coincident
with those of the oils from the Dhak Pass Formation in the Upper Indus Basin, Pakistan and the oils likely originate from
a marine source rock. In contrast, the Lockhart Formation oils show different behaviors and seem to be originated from dirty
carbonate rocks although all three crude oils are mature, being of non-biodegraded and somewhat mixed organic matter origin.
Low Pr/Ph values and high C35 homohopane index for the Lockhart Formation oils suggest a source of anoxic environment with low Eh while oils from the Datta
Formation and Dhak Pass Formation showed different trends, i.e., lower values of C35 homohopane index indicating different depositional environment than oil from the Lockhart Formation. All three crude oils
from the Upper Indus Basin are mature for the hopane ratios, i.e., Ts/Ts+Tm, C3222S/(S+R) and C30 αβ/(αβ+βα) and sterane ratios, i.e., C2922S/(S+R) and C29ββ/(ββ+αα) but oils from the Lockhart Formation seem to be less mature than those from the Palaeocene and Datta Formation
according to plots like API° vs. homohopane Index, Pr/Ph vs. sterane. The relative composition of 5α(H), 14β(H), 17β(H)-24-ethylecholestanes
and the C2920S/20S+20R index, indicate that all three crude oils are equally mature, which makes it unlikely with respect to the above
said plots. This difference is may be due to the migratory chromatography which alters the concentrations of sterane and hoapnes
and hence gives different results. These oils do not exhibit UCM and have complete n-alkane profiles indicating non-biodegradation. 相似文献

The current-driven electrostatic solitons and shocks are investigated in flowing plasmas having stationary dust and non-Maxwellian electrons. The propagation of solar wind parallel to the external magnetic field in the boundary regions of dusty magnetospheres of planets can give rise to drift type unstable electrostatic waves and nonlinear structures even if density is homogeneous. The work compiles a correlated study of a gravitational quasi equilibrium thermodynamic approach for establishing and signifying a unique behavior of the cosmological entropy and phase transitions in an expanding Universe. On the basis of prescribed boundary conditions for the cluster temperature a relation for the intra‐cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters has been derived. A more productive and signifying approach of the correlation functions used for galaxy clustering phenomena shows a unique behavior of the entropy change where a phenomenon known as the gravitational phase transition occurs. This unique behavior occurs with a symmetry breaking from mild clustering to low clustering and from mild clustering to high clustering which differs from a normal symmetry breaking in material sciences. We also derive results for the specific latent heat associated with the phase transitions of 3.20 Tc and 0.55 Tc for the mildly clustered phase to the low clustered phase and from the mildly clustered phase to the highly clustered phase, respectively. In this work, the X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) technique is utilized to analyze the surface chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) which was collected from various locations at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The main elements found on the surface of PM are carbon (C), oxygen (O) and silicon (Si) with combined percentage of 89.4–94.9 while traces of nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), aluminum (Al), sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), manganese (Mg), and sulfur (S) were also present. The analyzed XPS chemical state of C, O and Si was further used to determine their bonding with other elements occurring over the surface of PM. Carbon was found in the form of carbides (18.86%), fluorides (2.39%) and carbonates (78.75%); oxygen was observed as oxides (21.05%) and hydroxides (73.42%) of other metals; and silicon was detected as silicones (12.16%), nitrides (82.53%) and silicates (5.25%). The particle size of a PM is also of great concern for health issues, and thus has been investigated by the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) was employed for cross verification of detected elements by XPS. 相似文献
