As the social, ecological and economic benefits of green buildings become more established, firms, especially professional service firms, are responding by adopting sustainable office space (SOS). Accelerating this uptake demands a nuanced appreciation of firms’ understandings of and motivations for adopting SOS. Through a qualitative study of professional service firms in Sydney, this paper brings together a decentred understanding of the contemporary firm drawn from the ‘new economic geographies’ approach and theories of corporate social responsibility to trace and interpret the diverse and overlapping motivations shaping the uptake of SOS amongst these firms. The firm is shown to be a site of plurality and agency, governed by multiple logics. Whilst motivations informed by economic logic remain persuasive and pervasive, the adoption of SOS is simultaneously informed by a wider palette of logics, including environmental and social logics. The paper argues that a decentred conceptualisation of the firm brings the multiplicity of firms’ orientations towards SOS into view and, in so doing, has the potential to inform a politics of intervention for steering firms towards more socially and environmentally sustainable behaviours.  相似文献

A study of acid-labile (A-L) aluminium in modern surface sediments and cores from lakes in Norway, shows surface depletions indicating sharply reduced retention of aluminium where lake pH is below 4.8–5.0. This result complements previous palaeolimnological studies of acid-labile sediment aluminium (A-L aluminium) in acidified lakes, which have focused on up-core concentration increases attributed to enhanced supply of catchment derived aluminium.The surface sediments, while showing great inter-site variation, have on average lower concentrations of A-L aluminium at acidic sites. Further, for lakes with pH<5.0, there is a significant positive correlation of A-L aluminium with pH. The palaeolimnological data show reduced A-L aluminium concentration where diatom inferred pH is below about 4.8–5.0.Because there are both positive and negative effects of acidification, variation in A-L aluminium concentration in cores reveals more information about acidification than was previously supposed. In addition to indicating the time of enhancement of catchment aluminium supply, evidence of whether (and if so when) the water pH fell below 4.9 is also indicated.  相似文献

Quarterly field sampling was conducted to characterize variations in water column and sediment nutrients in a eutrophic southern California estuary with a history of frequent macroalgal blooms. Water column and sediment nutrient measures demonstrated that Upper Newport Bay (UNB) is a highly enriched estuary. High nitrate (NO3 ) loads from the river entered the estuary at all sampling times with a rainy season (winter) maximum estimated at 2,419 mol h−1. This resulted in water NO3 concentration in the estuary near the river mouth at least one order of magnitude above all other sampling locations during every seasons; maximum mean water NO3 concentration was 800 μM during springer 1997. Phosphorus (P)-loading was high year round (5.7–90.4 mol h−1) with no seasonal pattern. Sediment nitrogen (N)-content showed a seasonal pattern with a spring maximum declining through fall. sediment and water nutrients, as well as percent cover of three dominant macroalgae, varied between the main channel and tidal creeks. During all seasons, water column NO3 concentrations were higher in the main channel than in tidal creeks while tidal creeks had higher levels of sediment total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN) and P. During each of the four sampling periods, percent cover ofEntermorpha intestinalis andCeramium spp. was higher in tidal creeks than in the main channel, while percent cover ofUlva expansa was always higher in the main channel. Decreases in sediment N in both creek and channel habitats were concurrent with increases in macroalgal cover, possibly reflecting use of stored sediment TKN by macroalgae. Our data suggest a shift in primary nutrient sources for macroalgae in UNB from riverine input during winter and spring to recycling from sediments duirng summer and fall.  相似文献

Twenty-one lakes along the west coast of Svalbard were cored between 28 July and 14 August 1995. Five cores were 210Pb dated and analysed for spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs), indicators of deposition from fossil-fuel combustion sources, and trace metals. Surface and pre-industrial levels of five cores were analysed for 10 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) isomers and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, whilst all 21 surface sediments were analysed for SCPs. Temporal and spatial trends in the atmospheric deposition of pollutants were identified. Whilst temporal patterns of deposited pollutants may have been truncated due to concentrations falling below the limits of detection, spatial patterns showed elevated levels of SCP, PAH, PCB, and possibly Pb within 60–70 km of Isfjord. Tenndammen (U), the closest site to Longyearbyen, showed the highest levels of contamination for all pollutants. Differences in the deposition patterns of PAH and PCB are thought to be due to local sources of PAH from coal combustion whilst PCB sources are remote. It is concluded that the impact from atmospheric deposition on Svalbard is due to a combination of spatially limited local sources superimposed on a broad-scale, long-range pattern.  相似文献

The social gradient in health and mortality has been acknowledged for some time and, more recently, there is some evidence that the gap between the richer and poorer is widening in Britain. Other studies have also shown that health and mortality outcomes are worse in places that are experiencing population decline and better in places that are growing. This analysis examines, first, whether there is a mortality gap between the least and most deprived people in Scotland, second, whether this gap has widened since the 1980s and, third, whether the gap can be explained by patterns of population change. Our results demonstrate that the widening mortality gap in Scotland cannot be explained simply as an artefact of population change, even though it is widening most in those places that are experiencing population decline. This type of research is made possible by the reliable denominator population information provided in the 1981 and 2001 censuses.  相似文献

Geochemical analysis of six radiometrically dated short cores of recent sediment from Lake Baikal shows clear evidence of enhanced Pb supply. However, the sediment concentration increases are very small; the average Pb concentration rises from a baseline value of 10.9 g g-1 to a peak value of only 14.8 g g-1. In contrast to the more polluted lakes commonly studied in Europe and North America, variation in Pb concentration is far more strongly influenced by natural variation than by pollution. In sediment deposited over the last 150–200 years 73% of the variance in the sediment Pb concentration can be accounted for by variation in bulk composition of the sediment, and by atmospheric pollution. Factors influencing Pb concentrations over this time period are, in order of decreasing average importance (fraction of total variance explained), catchment supply (indicated by 226Ra activity variation) (43%), anthropogenic Pb emissions (24%), and dilution by ferromanganese hydroxides (6%). On longer (1000s of years) time scales dilution by biogenic silica is probably more important.The recent enhanced supply of catchment Pb correlates with accelerating accumulation rates, indicating a link with enhanced erosion. Anthropogenic sources dominate only in the southern basin, where local fossil-fuel burning industry is situated. The evidence for a local industrial source for the Pb pollution is strengthened by the high correlation between the inventories for Pb and for spheroidal carbonaceous particles. The absence of detectable anthropogenic Pb enrichment in the northern part of the lake suggests that long-distance Pb pollution is small compared with the local natural supply.  相似文献

Potential seasonal variation in the U-series radioisotopic signatures of lake and input waters was investigated in Hawes Water, north-west England, and the sedimentary record was examined to establish whether any observed seasonality is preserved in the sediment U and Th radioisotopic activity ratios. U-series disequilibrium in the waters is indicative of both surface and shallow sub-surface origins for the dissolved U, and that this supply is influenced by changes in the prevailing hydrological regime. However, the lake is buffered from this seasonality in that the 234U/238U activity ratio remains constant during the year, and the U content undergoes only a marginal decrease during summer. The change in the mechanism of lake sedimentation from allochthonous organic input during winter to autochthonous carbonate formation during summer has a more significant influence on the U-series radioisotopic characteristics of sedimentary record in that the proportion of organic and carbonate material both exhibit a strong control on the234U/238U activity ratio and U content. In addition, significant proportions of sediment U and Th are associated with ferromanganese oxyhydroxides. Given this seasonality, it is of some significance that the 234U/238U activity ratios of the bottom sediments preserve a reasonable record of lake U-series disequilibrium and are, therefore, potential indicators of long-term changes in catchment hydrology.  相似文献

Several studies have provided evidence for the enrichment of trace elements in coastal waters, particularly for copper. These enrichments have been attributed to diffusion from continental shelf sediments and to an influx of river water. We attempted to resolve between these sources by undertaking an extensive suite of measurements of trace metals (Cu, Ni, Cd), 226Ra and 228Ra in the surface waters of the Gulf of Mexico, along with trace metal profiles at 6 stations (April 1981 and December 1982). These data establish that enrichments of copper, nickel and cadmium occur in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico. On the Mississippi continental shelf, high trace element concentrations (Cu, Ni: ~ 9 nmol/kg; Cd: ~ 200 pmol/kg) in lower-salinity waters (26‰) are similar to those observed in the Mississippi plume at the same salinity. This evidence suggests a river water source. On the other hand, trace element enrichments are also observed in the northern Gulf (Cu: +0.4 nmol/kg; Ni: +0.5 nmol/kg; Cd: +20 pmol/kg) which coincide with an increase in 228Ra but are not accompanied by decreased salinity. The excess of evaporation over precipitation in this region makes it possible that this water could be evaporated estuarine water; therefore, hydrographic observations cannot distinguish readily between river and shelf sources. A regional flux balance shows that most of the excess copper in the surface waters of the Florida Current can be supplied by the river-borne dissolved copper flux. Within the uncertainties of such calculations, the continental shelf copper flux must be less than or equal to the river flux.  相似文献
