Hydrocarbons in the sediments of Port Valdez,Alaska: Consequences of five years' permitted discharge

Hydrocarbons have been investigated in the sediments of Port Valdez, Alaska after three to five years of oil terminal operation with a routine daily discharge of 170 kg of petroleum residue in an otherwise undeveloped area. Surficial benthic sediments (0–5 cm) and core segments down to 30 cm have been analyzed. Information about total hydrocarbons, unresolved complex mixture, normal alkanes, pristane, phytane, hopanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons indicates that petroleum, biogenic hydrocarbons, and combustion-derived aromatic hydrocarbons are present in sediments around the terminal at concentrations up to 218 μg g?1 dry sediment. The vertical, horizontal and temporal distributions of anthropogenic hydrocarbons indicate that most of the sedimentary hydrocarbon accumulation has occurred within 1 km of the terminal. A simple calculation suggests that less than 3% of the total oil discharged during routine operations of the terminal has entered the sediments of Port Valdez. This paper presents an historical and in places informal account of the meltwater hypothesis, which invokes enormous outburst floods for the formation of subglacial bedforms. It begins with a brief discussion of the difficulties of determining processes of formation for landforms, which are not seen in formation. Analogy provides a solution to these difficulties. Analogy between erosional marks at the bases of turbidites and drumlins, which were the starting point for this hypothesis, rests on the idea that inverted erosional marks at the ice bed are subsequently infilled to form drumlins. Field tests on the sedimentology, architecture, and landform associations of drumlins in the Livingstone Lake drumlin field are outlined before more extensive work on bedrock erosional forms and flood routes is introduced. Bedrock erosional forms played a central part in establishing the hypothesis since their form and ornamentation are confidently interpreted as fluvial. Their form and genesis are discussed mainly with reference to sites at French River and Wilton Creek, Ontario, though some remarkable bedrock erosional forms in Antarctica support their regional extent. Initially in the meltwater hypothesis, drumlins were thought to be cavity fills and erosional drumlins were recognized later. This development is shown to be central to the realization that drumlin composition may be inferred from drumlin form. The scale of drumlin fields, measured at about 103 km2, and the magnitude of the inferred floods require that the flood events were regional. Regional-scale flood tracts in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and the Northwest Territories extending over 1000 km in length and several hundred kilometers in width, support this suggestion. Floods, had they occurred, would have caused rapid rates of sea level rise and may have changed climate through their effects on ocean stratification and sea surface temperatures. The meltwater hypothesis covers a range of bedforms besides drumlins and bedrock erosional marks—fluting, Rogen moraine, hummocky terrain, and transverse ridges. Recent work shows how these forms are best explained by the meltwater hypothesis. The roles of water storage and release, which underpin the theory of the meltwater hypothesis, remain poorly understood. 相似文献

The existing concept of the gradient of the potential field anomaly over a 3D source has been generalized. An observed anomaly is modified through a filter based on an assumed source geometry. The first-order derivatives of this modified anomaly in three mutually orthogonal directions form the components of a vector termed the resultant gradient. The gravity anomaly over a point mass, a vertical line mass and the gravity/magnetic anomaly reduced-to-pole over a bottomless right rectangular prism have been suitably modified to yield a specific shape for the amplitude of the resultant gradient in order to decipher the depth of the source centroid/corner. The applicability of the proposed technique is demonstrated by the analyses of a simulated example over a composite source and a real example from published literature with drill-hole information. 相似文献

The effect of cadmium (5 μ/ml) on the growth of Euglena gracilis is moderated by the addition of supplemental zinc levels above the normal 1 μ/ml level found in the growth medium. Gel chromatography reveals that th majority (ca. 85%) of cytosolic cadmium is localized in a cadmium-binding protein (CdBP). The CdBP appears to elute in a position slightly lower in molecular weight than mammalian metallothionein, contains thiol, and upon ion-exchange chromatography elutes in multiple peaks at ionic strengths greater than mammalian metallothioneins. The remaining cadmium is associated with high molecular weight components. Cytosolic zinc is found primarily (> 80%) in a low molecular weight peak distinct from cadmium, with the remainder as high molecular weight species. As the cells become zinc-deficient and cease proliferation, zinc is lost from the low molecular weight peak while, based on cytosolic protein, the zinc content of the high molecular weight peak remains essentially constant. 相似文献

Vertical and horizontal distribution patterns of larval and juvenile fishes were described from five offshore petroleum platforms in the north-central Gulf of Mexico. Light traps and passively-fished plankton nets were used nocturnally between 1995–2000 to collect fishes in surface and deep (15–23 m depth) waters within the platform structure, and light traps were also used in surface waters directly down-current of the platforms. Light traps fished at the surface, as opposed to at-depth, collected greater CPUEs and greater diversity of larval and juvenile fishes. Of the dominant taxa collected by light traps, clupeids, engraulids, synodontids, and presettlement blenniids were most common in surface waters within the platform, while postflexion scombrids and settlement-size blenniids and pomacentrids were most common in surface waters down-current of the platforms. Deep plankton nets collected greater densities of non-clupeiform larval fishes, although surface plankton nets collected greater numbers of taxa. The vertical distribution patterns described for dominant larval fish collected by plankton nets were generally consistent with those from other studies, i.e. clupeid, carangid, sciaenid and scombrid larvae more abundant in surface waters at platforms, and synodontid, bregmacerotid, gobiid and bothid larvae more abundant in deeper waters. Oil and gas platforms likely impact larval and juvenile fish populations, particularly considering their proliferation in the Gulf (i.e., over 4000 platforms). The results from this study provide valuable baseline information for future research investigating how platforms impact the life history stages of fish populations. 相似文献

CYP1A-immunopositive protein can be elevated in response to planar PAHs and PCBs in Mytilus sp. digestive gland whilst CYP3A-immunopositive protein has been associated with testosterone 6β-hydroxylation in fish. Levels of CYP1A- and CYP3A-immunopositive protein were determined in Mytilus galloprovincialis digestive gland microsomes collected from 12 sites in the Mediterranean Sea during May and September 2001. CYP1A-immunopositive protein was significantly highest at contaminated sites whilst CYP3A-immunopositive protein was significantly lowest. A weak negative correlation (r2=0.21) was seen between CYP1A- and CYP3A-immunopositive protein. Little evidence of differences at the different sampling times was observed. These results confirm previous work indicating elevation of CYP1A-immunopositive protein in Mytilus sp. digestive gland at contaminated sites. Further study is required to characterise CYP3A-like expression in Mytilus and to elucidate the consequences of possible CYP3A-like down-regulation at contaminated sites. 相似文献

This paper describes a methodology that combines the outputs of (1) the Integrated Model to Assess the Greenhouse Effect (IMAGE Version 1.0) of the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM) (given a greenhouse gas emission policy, this model can estimate the effects such as global mean surface air temperature change for a wide variety of policies) and (2) ECHAM-1/LSG, the Global Circulation Model (GCM) of the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany. The combination enables one to calculate grid point surface air temperature changes for different scenarios with a turnaround time that is much quicker than that for a GCM. The methodology is based upon a geographical pattern of the ratio of grid point temperature change to global mean values during a certain period of the simulation, as calculated by ECHAM-1/LSG for the 1990 Scenarios A and D of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). A procedure, based upon signal-to noise ratios in the outputs, enabled us to estimate where we have confidence in the methodology; this is at about 23% to 83% of the total of 2,048 grid points, depending upon the scenario and the decade in the simulation. It was found that the methodology enabled IMAGE to provide useful estimates of the GCM-predicted grid point temperature changes. These estimates were within 0.5K (0.25K) throughout the 100 years of a given simulation for at least 79% (74%) of the grid points where we are confident in applying the methodology. The temperature ratio pattern from Scenario A enabled IMAGE to provide useful estimates of temperature change within 0.5K (0.25K) in Scenario D for at least 88% (68%) of the grid points where we have confidence; indicating that the methodology is transferable to other scenarios. Tests with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory GCM indicated, however, that a temperature ratio pattern may have to be developed for each GCM. The methodology, using a temperature ratio pattern from the 1990 IPCC Scenario A and involving IMAGE, gave gridded surface air temperature patterns for the 1992 IPCC radiative-forcing Scenarios C and E and the RIVM emission Scenario B; none of these scenarios has been simulated by ECHAM-1/LSG. We have studied the oxygen isotopic composition of rocks from a 100 km transect through the central Superior province of Ontario, representing progressively the shallower terrains of the Kapuskasing structural zone (KSZ), the Wawa gneiss terrane (WGT), and the Michipicoten greenstone belt (MGB). These rocks range in age from 2.76 to 2.60 Ga, and correspond to a section through approximately 20 km of crustal thickness. Equivalent lithologic types have similar range of 18O values at each crustal level: tonalitic to granodioritic rocks: 6.4 to 9.5; dioritic and anorthositic rocks: 5.5 to 7.6; mafic gneisses: group 1 (majority): 5.7 to 7.1; group 2: 8.1 to 9.5. 18O values exhibit a remarkable correlation with SiO2 values, similar to that observed in unaltered plutonic rocks of equivalent composition. Paragneisses have significantly higher 18O values: 9.3 to 12.2. Low-grade metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the MGB are 18O-enriched compared to their high-grade equivalents in the KSZ and WGT: 7.4 to 13.3 for mafic to felsic metavolcanic rocks; 11.4 to 14.7 for clastic metasediments. Coexisting minerals exhibit 18O-fractionation consistent with equilibrium, but corresponding to uniform isotopic temperatures about 553 to 584°C across the entire transect, lower than the inferred metamorphic temperatures in the highest-grade (KSZ) terrane. The lack of distinctive isotopic differences between equivalent rock types in the KSZ, WGT and MGB suggests that there is no significant gradient in 18O with depth in the crust. The majority of mafic gneisses (group 1) appear to have been emplaced either as subaerial extrusives, intrusive sills, or, less likely, as submarine extrusives that were hydrothermally altered at high temperatures. The less abundant group 2 mafic rocks have the 18O values typical of greenstones that were altered at low temperature by seawater, and isotopically resemble low-grade rocks in the Michipicoten and Abitibi belts. In general, no major changes in whole-rock isotopic composition appear to have occurred during granulite facies metamorphism, implying limited flux of water or CO2. The continuous linear gradient in 18O versus SiO2 in the high-grade rocks cannot be due to differentiation of a mafic source magma. Inorganic chlorine (i.e. chloride; Clin) is generally considered inert in soil and is often used as a tracer of soil and ground water movements. However, recent studies indicate that substantial retention or release of Clin can occur in soil, but the rates and processes responsible under different environmental conditions are largely unknown. We performed 36Cl tracer experiments which indicated that short-term microbial uptake and release of Clin, in combination with more long-term natural formation of chlorinated organic matter (Clorg), caused Clin imbalances in coniferous forest soil. Extensive microbial uptake and release of Clin occurred over short time scales, and were probably associated with changes in environmental conditions. Up to 24% of the initially available Clin within pore water was retained by microbial uptake within a week in our experiments, but most of this Clin was released to the pore water again within a month, probably associated with decreasing microbial populations. The natural formation of Clorg resulted in a net immobilization of 4% of the initial pore water Clin over four months. If this rate is representative for the area where soil was collected, Clorg formation would correspond to a conversion of 25% of the yearly wet deposition of Clin. The study illustrates the potential of two Clin retaining processes in addition to those previously addressed elsewhere (e.g. uptake of chloride by vegetation). Hence, several processes operating at different time scales and with different regulation mechanisms can cause Clin imbalances in soil. Altogether, the results of the present study (1) provide evidence that Clin cannot be assumed to be inert in soil, (2) show that microbial exchange can regulate pore water Clin concentrations and (3) confirm the controversial idea of substantial natural chlorination of soil organic matter. 相似文献
