Summary. Rotational remanent magnetization, RRM, is the magnetization acquired when a sample is rotated during alternating field demagnetization. Although the existence of RRM has been well documented in different laboratories, until now no physical mechanism explaining its origin has been given. We propose that the RRM originates from thermal fluctuations biased by a precessional torque associated with the alternating field. Our theory is consistent with the observation that no directional preference exists in the experimental situation until the sample is rotated relative to the alternating field. Moreover, our theory predicts that the combined sample rotation and precession will produce a RRM that switches direction when the frequency of sample rotation increases from any value below the frequency of the alternating field to any value above that frequency as observed in experiments. Although no precise theory is given for the intensity of RRM, the model presented here can qualitatively explain previous intensity observations.  相似文献

A new method of light curve analysis is introduced for systems containing one component possessing an extended atmosphere. Occultation or partial eclipses may be treated with or without the presence of transparency effects. Besides admitting an arbitrary degree of transparency to the eclipsing component, an arbitrary law of limb-darkening may also be assigned to the eclipsed star. The method is applied to the analysis of continuum, narrow band light curves of V444 Cygni obtained by Cherepashchuk and Khaliullin. Primary and secondary minima are examined separately with reasonable results.  相似文献

Gravitational stability of gaseous protostellar disks is relevant to theories of planetary formation. Stable gas disks favor formation of planetesimals by the accumulation of solid material; unstable disks allow the possibility of direct condensation of gaseous protoplanets. We present the results of numerical experiments designed to test the stability of thin disks against large-scale, self-gravitational disruption. The disks are represented by a distribution of about 6 × 104 point masses on a two-dimensional (r, φ) grid. The motions of the particles in the self-consistent gravity field are calculated, and the evolving density distributions are examined for instabilities. Two parameters that have major influences on stability are varied: the initial temperature of the disk (represented by an imposed velocity dispersion), and the mass of the protostar relative to that of the disk. It is found that a disk as massive as 1M, surrounding a 1M protostar, can be stable against long-wavelength gravitational disruption if its temperature is about 300°K or greater. Stability of a cooler disk requires that it be less massive, but even at 100°K a stable disk can have an appreciable fraction (13) of a solar mass.  相似文献

A method is presented whereby the structure of rotating stars may be determined from an initial guess at the geometry of equipotential surfaces. The method may be considered an extension of the work of Kippenhahn and Thomas in that a uniformly continuous geometry is defined in terms of the appropriate spherical model with Roche characteristics at the surface of the configuration and sphericity at the centre. A simple Cowling model in uniform rotation is employed to illustrate the technique and for comparison purposes with previous work.  相似文献

Over 300 previously unrecognized volcanic domes were identified on Lunar Orbiter photographs using the following criteria: (1) the recognition of land forms on the Moon similar in morphology to terrestrial volcanic domes, (2) structural control, (3) geomorphic discordance, and (4) the recognition of land forms modified by dome-like swellings. Many terrestrial volcanic domes are similar in morphology to lunar domes. This analogy suggests that some lunar hills are in fact extrusive volcanic domes. Many of the domes identified in this paper seem to be related to basins and craters, and with the exception of local tectonic grid control few domes are related to any observable Moon-wide pattern. Domes are not uniquely found on maria. Dome formation probably spans a wide range of lunar time and activity in areas where domes are located may be continuing to the present as revealed by the close correlation of dome distribution with the distribution of lunar transient events. A three-dimensional, time-dependent model of thermospheric dynamics has been used to interpret recent experimental measurements of high altitude winds by rocket-borne and ground-based techniques. The model is global and includes a self-consistent treatment of the non-linear, Coriolis and viscosity terms. The solar u.v. and e.u.v. energy input provides the major energy source for the thermosphere. Solar u.v. and e.u.v. heating appear to be inadequate to explain observed thermospheric temperatures if e.u.v. heating efficiency (ε) lies in the range 0.3 < ε < 0.35. If the recent solar e.u.v. data are correct, then a value of ε between 0.4 and 0.45 would bring fluxes and observed temperatures into agreement. The Heppner (1977) and Volland (1978) models of high-latitude electric field are used to provide sources of both momentum (via ion drag) and energy (via Joule heating). We find that the Heppner Model CO (equivalent to Volland Model 1) is most appropriate for very quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp ? 2) while Model A (equivalent to Volland Model 2) provides the necessary enhancement at high latitudes for conditions of moderate activity (Kp ~ 4). Even with the addition of a polar electric field, there still appears to be a shortage of high-latitude energy input in that model winds tend to be 10 m s?1 poleward of observed winds under quiet or average geomagnetic conditions. This extra energy cannot be provided by enhancing the polar electric fields since the extra momentum would cause disagreement with the observed high latitude winds. High latitude particulate sources of relatively low energies, ~100 eV, seem the most likely candidates depositing their energy above about 200km. Relatively modest amounts of energy are then required, < 1010W global, to bring the model into agreement with both high- and mid-latitude neutral wind results.  相似文献

Sediment cores and grab samples were collected in the Upper Gulf of Thailand to determine sedimentation rates and to determine if metal concentrations reflect anthropogenic inputs.Accumulation rates of sediments in the Upper Gulf measured using the 210Pb method, appear to vary from ca. 4 to 11 mm yr?1. Sediment budgets suggest that little of the sediment delivered to the Upper Gulf by the major rivers is ultimately transported to the Lower Gulf. Metal concentrations in Upper Gulf sediments appear to be dominantly controlled by natural inputs.  相似文献

We compare images of Comet Hale-Bopp (1995 O1) in HCN and CN taken near perihelion (April 1, 1997) to determine the origin of CN in comets. We imaged the J=1→0 transition of HCN at λ=3 mm with the BIMA Array. Data from two weeks around perihelion were summed within four phase bins based on the rotational period of the comet. This increases both the signal-to-noise ratio and the u-v coverage while decreasing the smearing of the spatial features. The similarly phased narrowband CN images were taken at Lowell Observatory within the same range of dates as the HCN images. We find that there is a better correlation between HCN and CN than between HCN and the optically dominant dust. If the CN in jets does have a dust source it would have to have a very low albedo and/or small particle size. The production rates are consistent with HCN being a primary parent of CN, although there are discrepancies between the HCN destruction scalelength and the CN production scalelength which we discuss.  相似文献
