One year of instantaneous suspended sediment concentration, C, and instantaneous discharge, Q, data collected at Ngarradj downstream of the Jabiluka mine site indicate that the use of a simple CQ rating curve is not a reliable method for estimating suspended sediment loads from the Ngarradj catchment. The CQ data are not only complicated by hysteresis effects within the rising and falling stages of individual events, but also by variable depletion of available suspended sediment through multipeaked runoff events. Parameter values were fitted to an event‐based suspended sediment load–Q relationship as an alternative to the CQ relationship. Total suspended sediment load and Q data for 10 observed events in the Ngarradj stream catchment were used to fit parameter values to a suspended sediment load–Q relationship, using (a) log–log regression and (b) iterative parameter fitting techniques. A more reliable and statistically significant prediction of suspended sediment load from the Ngarradj catchment is obtained using an event‐based suspended sediment load–Q relationship. Fitting parameters to the event‐based suspended sediment load–Q relationship using iterative techniques better predicts long‐term suspended sediment loads compared with log–log regression techniques. Partition coefficients for a range of Rare Earth Elements (REEs), Y, Sc, Al and Zr were determined between forsteritic olivine (nearly end-member Mg2SiO4) and ten melt compositions in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (CMAS) at 1 bar and 1400 °C, with concentrations of the trace elements in the olivine and the melt measured by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The REEs and Sc were added at levels sufficient to ensure that concentrations in the olivine were well above the detection limits. The REE partition coefficients decrease with increasing silica in the melt, indicating strong bonding between REEO1.5 and SiO2 in the melt. The variation of as a function of ionic radius is well described by the Brice equation for each composition, although a small proportion of this variation is due to the increase in the strength of the REEO1.5-SiO2 interactions in the melt with ionic radius. Scandium behaves very similarly to the REEs, but a global fit of the data from all ten melt compositions suggests that deviates somewhat from the parabolas established by the REE and Y, implying that Sc may substitute into olivine differently to that of the REEs. In contrast to the behaviour of the large trivalent cations, the concentration of Al in olivine is proportional to the square root of its concentration in the melt, indicating a coupled substitution in olivine with a high degree of short-range order. The lack of any correlation of REE partition coefficients with Al in olivine or melt suggests that the REE substitution in olivine is charge-balanced by cation vacancies. The partition coefficient of the tetravalent trace element Zr, which is highly incompatible in olivine, depends on the CaO content of the melt.  相似文献

Interdisciplinarity is a notoriously difficult concept to define, and even harder to achieve in practice. All too often social approaches reduce science to an object of study, or conversely physical science approaches are invoked as a source of ‘higher’ truth. Drawing upon our experiences as ESRC-NERC PhD students within geography, we outline a paratactical approach that links disciplines by adjacency rather than hierarchy. Toppling the disciplinary hierarchy creates the potential for non-reductionistic dialogue between science and social science, but it also raises a series of practical difficulties. These are considered around the themes of polyvocality, breadth over depth and (im)permanence. We suggest that while this kind of approach is increasingly encouraged by research funding bodies, it is less easily sustained within the everyday mechanics of the academic world.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Maps are explicitly positioned within the realms of power, representation, and epistemology; this article sets out to explore how these ideas are manifest in the academic Geographic Information Science (GIScience) literature. We analyze 10 years of literature (2005–2014) from top tier GIScience journals specific to the geoweb and geographic crowdsourcing. We then broaden our search to include three additional journals outside the technical GIScience journals and contrast them to the initial findings. We use this comparison to discuss the apparent technical and social divide present within the literature. Our findings demonstrate little explicit engagement with topics of social justice, marginalization, and empowerment within our subset of almost 1200 GIScience papers. The social, environmental, and political nature of participation, mapmaking, and maps necessitates greater reflection on the creation, design, and implementation of the geoweb and geographic crowdsourcing. We argue that the merging of the technical and social has already occurred in practice, and for GIScience to remain relevant for contributors and users of crowdsourced maps, researchers and practitioners must heed two decades of calls for substantial and critical engagement with the geoweb and crowdsourcing as social, environmental, and political processes.  相似文献
