To simulate trapping of meteoritic noble gases by solids, 18 samples of Fe3O4 were synthesized in a noble gas atmosphere at 350–720 K by the reactions: 3Fe + 4H2O → Fe3O4 + 4H2 (Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) 3Fe + 4CO → Fe3O3 + 4C + carbides (Xe only) Phases were separated by selective solvents (HgCl2, HCl). Noble gas contents were analyzed by mass spectrometry, or, in runs where 36 d Xe127 tracer was used, by γ-counting. Surface areas, as measured by the BET method, ranged from 1 to 400 m2/g. Isotopic fractionations were below the detection limit of 0.5%/m.u.Sorption of Xe on Fe3O4 and C obeys Henry's Law between and atm, but shows only a slight temperature dependence between 650 and 720 K (). The mean distribution coefficient KXe is cc STP/g atm for Fe3O4 and only a factor of greater for C; such similarity for two cogenetic phases was predicted by Lewis et al. (1977). Stepped heating and etching experiments show that 20–50% of the total Xe is physically adsorbed and about 20% is trapped in the solid. The rest is chemisorbed with . The desorption or exchange half-time for the last two components is >102 yr at room temperature.Etching experiments showed a possible analogy to “Phase ” in meteorites. A typical carbon + carbide sample, when etched with HNO3, lost 47% of its Xe but only 0.9% of its mass, corresponding to a ~0.6 Å layer. Though this etchable, surficial gas component was more thermolabile than (release below 1000°C, compared to 1200–1600°C), another experiment shows that the proportion of chemisorbed Xe increases upon moderate heating (1 hr at 450°C). Apparently adsorbed gases can become “fixed” to the crystal, by processes not involving volume diffusion (recrystallization, chemical reaction, migration to traps, etc.). Such mechanisms may have acted in the solar nebula, to strengthen the binding of adsorbed gases.Adsorbed atmospheric noble gases are present in all samples, and dominate whenever the noble gas partial pressure in the atmosphere is greater than that in the synthesis. Many of the results of Lancet and Anders (1973) seem to have been dominated by such an atmospheric component; others are suspect for other reasons, whereas still others seem reliable. When the doubtful samples of Lancet and Anders are eliminated or corrected, the fractionation pattern—as in our samples—no longer peaks at Ar, but rises monotonically from Ne to Xe. No clear evidence remains for the strong temperature dependence claimed by these authors. 相似文献
New members of the crichtonite mineral series are described in which K, Ba, Ca and REE are in significant concentrations (5 wt% oxides) filling the A formula position in AM21O38. These phases are chromium (16 wt% Cr2O3) titanates (58 wt% TiO2) enriched in ZrO2 (5 wt%) and constitute a mineral repository for refractory and large ion lithophile elements in the upper mantle. The mineral senes coexists with Mg-Cr-ilmenite, Nb-Cr-rutile, and Ca-Cr (NbZr) armalcolite that have equally unusual chemistries. Kimberlitic crichtonites are depleted in the intermediate lanthanides but highly enriched in LREE and HREE with chondrite normalized abundances of 103 to 105. Crichtonite, armalcolite, and Nb-Cr-rutile occupy a compositional range in TiO2 contents bridging the gap between ilmenite and rutile, two minerals having a widespread distribution in kimberlites and mantle-derived nodule suites. In common with other associations, and based on similarities in mineral chemistry, it is concluded that these minerals formed at P = 20–30 kb, 900–1100°C by reaction of peridotite with metasomatizing fluids. Kimberlitic crichtonite may be expressed as spinel + Cr-ferropseudobrookite, and armalcolite is equivalent to Cr-geikielite + rutile in the system (FeMg)-TiO2-Cr2O3. This system contains a number of Cr-Ti compounds not found as minerals but it is proposed that the ubiquitous occurrence of ilmenite intergrowths in kimberlitic rutile results from decomposition of high pressure αPbO2-type crystallographic shear structures. The new minerals have exotic chemistries and the high K-affinities broaden the scope for the origin of alkalic rocks, the generation of highly potassic magmas in the upper mantle, and suggest that alkali metasomatism may be pervasive. 相似文献
Polycyclic aromatic (PAH) and aliphatic hydrocarbon compositions, organic carbon, nitrogen and lignin contents were determined in whole, unfractionated sediment from the Washington continental shelf and in discrete sediment fractions separated by particle size and density. At least 20 to 25% of perylene and PAH derived from pyrolytic processes and 50% of the retene measured in whole sediment are contained within organic C- and lignin-rich panicles of density ≤ 1.9 g/cc. These particles, which include primarily vascular plant remains and bits of charcoal, comprise less than 1% of the total sediment weight. In contrast, a series of methylated phenanthrene homologs, possibly of fossil origin, are concentrated in some component of the more dense, lithic matrix of the sediment. Equilibrium models of PAH sorption/desorption from aqueous phase onto small particles of high surface area do not appear applicable to the behavior of the major PAH types identified in this aquatic environment. 相似文献
Confluence dynamics in the Ganga–Ramganga valley in the western Ganga plains of India has been studied through systematic mapping of channel configuration using multi-date remote sensing images and topographic sheets for a period spanning nearly 100 years (1911–2000). The study has been supplemented with a detailed analysis of the channel morphology, hydrology and sediment transport characteristics of the different rivers. Our study indicates that new confluences have been created during this period and that the confluence points have moved both upstream and downstream on a historical time scale. Apart from major avulsions, other processes that have controlled the confluence movements include river capture, cut-offs and aggradation in the confluence area. River capture occurs through lateral bank erosion and migration, encroachment by the master stream and beheading of smaller rivers resulting in upstream movement of the confluence point. Another process which influences the upstream migration of the confluence is an increase in sinuosity of one of the channels near the confluence and then a cut-off. Aggradation in the confluence area and local avulsions of the primary channel in a multi-channel system seem to be the major process controlling the downstream movement of the confluence point. Analysis of channel morphology, hydrology and sediment budget for the study period supports our interpretations. 相似文献
The potential for residual hydrometeor contamination effects in the global temperature time series produced by Spencer and Christy from MSU channel 2 (MSU2) data has been addressed by Prabhakara et al. (1995, 1996). They use tropical oceanic MSU channel l (MSU1) data to estimate the hydrometeor effects on MSU2. We present several lines of evidence to show that their technique greatly overestimates the hydrometeor effects on MSU2. This overestimation is due to the faulty assumption that the hydrometeors that cause MSU1 warming are the same as (or always exist with) the hydrometeors that cause cooling in MSU2. Instead, the hydrometeors responsible for MSU1 warming are liquid phase, while those responsible for MSU2 cooling are large ice particles. Because liquid phase clouds are much more widespread than the large-ice portions of deep convective systems, their method greatly overestimates the areal coverage of contaminated tropical MSU2 data. In addition, we show that the convective screening procedure of Spencer and Christy removes the negative correlation between MSU1 and MSU2 their conclusions rest upon. Radiosonde validation of monthly tropical MSU2 anomalies over the tropical West Pacific also support these conclusions. 相似文献
The clay-sand mixture model of Xu and White is shown to simulate observed relationships between S-wave velocity (or transit time), porosity and clay content. In general, neither S-wave velocity nor S-wave transit time is a linear function of porosity and clay content. For practical purposes, clay content is approximated by shale volume in well-log applications. In principle, the model can predict S-wave velocity from lithology and any pair of P-wave velocity, porosity and shale volume. Although the predictions should be the same if all measurements are error free, comparison of predictions with laboratory and logging measurements show that predictions using P-wave velocity are the most reliable. The robust relationship between S- and P-wave velocities is due to the fact that both are similarly affected by porosity, clay content and lithology. Moreover, errors in the measured P-wave velocity are normally smaller than those in porosity and shale volume, both of which are subject to errors introduced by imperfect models and imperfect parameters when estimated from logs. Because the model evaluates the bulk and shear moduli of the dry rock frame by a combination of Kuster and Toksöz’ theory and differential effective medium theory, using pore aspect ratios to characterize the compliances of the sand and clay components, the relationship between P- and S-wave velocities is explicit and consistent. Consequently the model sidesteps problems and assumptions that arise from the lack of knowledge of these moduli when applying Gassmann's theory to this relationship, making it a very flexible tool for investigating how the vP-vs relationship is affected by lithology, porosity, clay content and water saturation. Numerical results from the model are confirmed by laboratory and logging data and demonstrate, for example, how the presence of gas has a more pronounced effect on P-wave velocity in shaly sands than in less compliant cleaner sandstones. 相似文献
During MONTBLEX 1990, various observational platforms were operated at Kharagpur and the nearby Kalaikunda Air Base. Using the data from all the platforms, one can draw the following conclusions. The temperature and wind data obtained from various sensors have overall compatibility. Sodar wind data indicate the presence of a low level jet at around 300 m above ground. The inversion height may be evaluated from the vertical profile of the sodar back-scatter echo intensity. The sub-synoptic or synoptic scale convergence modulates the inversion height and the presence of cloud-base within the inversion height in turn modulates the sensible heat and momentum fluxes. 相似文献
Forest vegetation of Vindhyan range located in the north of G.B. Pant Sagar (dam) has been subjected to degradation due to high biotic pressure caused by the installation of thermal power plants, coal mining, heavy cattle grazing etc. In the present study Landsat TM FCC of 1∶250,000 scale was visually analysed with respect to forest vegetation types, crown density and structure along with other landuse/land cover classes. ExceptShorea robusta (Sal) andLagerstroemia parviflora (Lendia) all forest vegetation types show higher percentage of degradation and under-stocked condition with respect to their areal extent under study. Overall classification accuracy of the forest types has been found to be 88.94%. This indicates that for obtaining reliable mapping accuracy in dry deciduous areas, satellite remote sensing data of appropriate season is essential.
The lead-zinc bearing Proterozoic rocks of Zawar, Rajasthan, show classic development of small-scale structures resulting
from superposed folding and ductile shearing. The most penetrative deformation structure noted in the rocks is a schistosity
(S1) axial planar to a phase of isoclinal folding (F1). The lineations which parallel the hinges ofF1 folds are deformed by a set of folds (F2) having vertical or very steep axial planes. At many places a crenulation cleavage (S2) has developed subparallel to the axial planes ofF2 folds, particularly in the psammopelitic rocks. The plunge and trend ofF2 folds vary widely over the area.
Deformation ofF2 folds into hook-shaped geometry and development of another set of axial planar crenulation cleavage are the main imprints
of the third generation folds (F3) in the region. In addition to these, there are at least two other sets of cleavage planes with corresponding folds in small
scales. More common among these is a set of recumbent and reclined folds (F4), developed on steeply dipping early-formed planes. Kink bands and associated sharp-hinged folds represent the other set
(F5).
Two major refolded folds are recognizable in the map pattern of the Zawar mineralised belt. The larger of the two, the Main
Zawar Fold (MZF), shows a broad hook-shaped geometry. The other large-scale structure is the Zawarmala fold, lying south-west
of the MZF. Both the major structures show truncation of lithological units along their respective east ‘limbs’, and extreme
variation in the width of formations. The MZF is primarily the result of superimposition ofF3 onF2.F1 folds are relatively smaller in scale and are recognizable in the quartzite unit which responded to deformation mainly by
buckle shortening. Large-scale pinching-and-swelling that appears in the outcrop pattern seems to be a pre-F2 feature.
The structural evolutionary model worked out to explain the chronology of the deformational features and the large-scale out-crop
pattern envisages extreme east-west shortening following formation ofF1 structures, resulting in the formation of tight and isoclinal antiforms (F2) with pinched-in synforms in between. These latter zones evolved into a number of ductile shear zones (DSZs). The east-west
refolding of the large-scaleF2 isoclinal antiforms seems to be the consequence of a continuous deformation and resultant migration of folds along the DSZs.
The main shear zone which wraps the Zawar folds followed a curved path.
Because of the penetrative nature of theF2 movement, the early lineations which were at high angles to the later ones (as is evident in the west of Zawarmala), became
subparallel to the trend ofF2 folding over a large part of the area. Further, the virtually coaxial nature ofF2 andF3 folds and the refolding ofF3 folds by a new set of N-S folds is an indication of continuous progressive deformation. 相似文献
The rock magnetic properties of the Chinese loess and paleosols constitute a unique and sensitive record of East Asian paleoclimate through the Quaternary Period. Systematic variations in the concentration and grain size of the magnetic minerals in these sediments have produced systematic variations in the magnetic susceptibility signal, which can be easily and rapidly measured at many sites across the Loess Plateau. Variations in many other rock magnetic properties can be used to identify the key shifts in ferrimagnetic grain size, but magnetic susceptibility alone is sufficiently sensitive to record stadial and interstadial climate stages, as well as glaciations and interglaciations. Past changes in rainfall and monsoon activity for this region are reconstructed from the susceptibility variations. The susceptibility record is calibrated using the modern relationship between rainfall and pedogenic susceptibility on the Loess Plateau. Our rainfall reconstructions identify enhanced summer monsoonal activity in the Chinese Loess Plateau region in the early Holocene and the last interglaciation. In the presently semiarid western area of the plateau, annual precipitation in interglacial times was up to 80% higher than at present; in the more humid southern and eastern areas, values were up to 20% higher than today's levels. During the last glaciation, precipitation decreased across the entire plateau, typically by 25%. The relationship between pedogenic susceptibility, climate, and weathering age was examined over the Northern Hemisphere temperate zone and the observed positive correlation between rainfall and susceptibility indicates that climate, rather than soil age, is the predominant factor that controls pedogenic susceptibility enhancement in loess soils. 相似文献
