The nonlinear behaviour of masonry piers loaded in their plane is investigated by parametric numerical simulations. Each pier has a cantilever scheme, is loaded by a constant axial load and is subjected to an increasing horizontal displacement at the top. The macro-modelling approach is used to perform numerical analyses, adopting two different constitutive laws: a total strain crack model and a plastic model. The numerical model is calibrated on a block-masonry type for which experimental tests are available in literature. Parametric numerical simulations are performed by varying the aspect-ratio and the compression level, in order to assess the influence of such parameters on both shear strength and displacement capacity. By comparing numerical results with formulas of international codes, a good agreement for the shear strength is obtained, while significant differences are observed for the displacement capacity, which is influenced by both parameters. The authors propose a simple empirical formula for the displacement capacity, obtained by fitting the numerical results. The expression can be useful in the practical design for considering the influence of aspect-ratio and compression level, currently neglected by building codes.  相似文献

In this paper, we use data obtained from LiDAR measurements during an ash emission event on 15 November 2010 at Mt. Etna, in Italy, in order to evaluate the spatial distribution of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. A scanning LiDAR system, located at 7?km distance from the summit craters, was directed toward the volcanic vents and moved in azimuth and elevation to analyse different volcanic plume sections. During the measurements, ash emission from the North East Crater and high degassing from the Bocca Nuova Crater were clearly visible. From our analysis we were able to: (1) evaluate the region affected by the volcanic plume presence; (2) distinguish volcanic plumes containing spherical aerosols from those having non-spherical ones; and (3) estimate the frequency of volcanic ash emissions. Moreover, the spatial distribution of ash mass concentration was evaluated with an uncertainty of about 50?%. We found that, even during ash emission episodes characterised by low intensity like the 15 November 2010 event, the region in proximity of the summit craters should be avoided by air traffic operations, the ash concentration being greater than 4?×?10?3?g/m3. The use of a scanning permanent LiDAR station may usefully monitor the volcanic activity and help to drastically reduce the risks to aviation operations during the frequent Etna eruptions.  相似文献

Totally 36 aquifers have been identified along the Mexico‐U.S. border. Of these, only 16 have adequate data to provide a reasonable level of confidence to categorize them as transboundary. Limited and/or contrasting data over the other aquifers in the region reflects the void in transboundary groundwater management and assessment mechanisms throughout much of the Mexico‐U.S. border. This paper identifies management mechanisms, structures, and institutional prioritization related to transboundary aquifers shared between Mexico and the United States. It also evaluates the differences in the transboundary nature of these aquifers, and how their combined hydrological and geographical considerations interrelate with local and regional social, economic, political, and even scale dimensions to create complex management challenges.  相似文献

In low‐rise steel‐concrete composite structures, moment‐resisting frames can be designed to develop a ductile response in beam‐to‐column joints and column bases by activating flexural yielding of beams and end plates, shear yielding of column web panel zones and yielding of anchors. To evaluate the performance of these components under differing earthquake intensities, a series of pseudodynamic, quasistatic cyclic and vibration tests were carried out on a two‐storey two‐bay moment resisting structure. The performance‐based seismic design and control of these structures requires that stiffness degradation, strength deterioration and slip are properly modelled. In this context, compact hysteretic models can play a key role and must therefore be striven for. Nonetheless, relevant techniques, like nonlinear system identification, are far from representing standard and reliable tools for the dynamic characterization of full‐scale structural systems. With this objective in mind, we present a restoring force surface‐based technique applied to pseudodynamic test data, in view of the nonlinear identification of multistorey frames. The technique is developed by means of a parametric approach, where a time‐variant stiffness operator is coupled to a modified Bouc–Wen model that allows both for slip and for degradation in stiffness. Strength deterioration is indirectly taken into account too. We also show how model‐based parameters can be correlated to the damage process progressively observed both in the structure and in its components. Most streams draining to the Mediterranean basin are temporary. As a result of their hydrological regime, temporary streams are affected by drying and rewetting periods. Drying can alter in-stream nitrogen (N) availability and reduce N processing rates and subsequent retention after re-wetting. We sought to determine if hydrologic drying modifies reach-scale sediment chemical properties and constrains the response of N processing to rewetting. We compared different abiotic characteristics of sediments and nitrification and denitrification rates between a perennial and intermittent reach in the same stream over a wet period, when surface water flowed in both reaches, and a dry period, when the intermittent reach dried up. We analyzed N processing rates by incubating sediments with stream water, thereby simulating a rewetting when sediments from the intermittent reach were dry. We found that drying increased the sediment nitrate (NO3 ?) content. Conversely, drying did not reduce the recovery of N processing rates to pre-dry levels after simulated flooding conditions. Our results suggest that dry reaches may act as a potential NO3 ? source by releasing downstream NO3 ? pulses after stream flow recovery. Given the European Water Framework Directive requirements to assess stream ecological status, these N pulses following rewetting should be considered when designing management plans in temporary streams. Our study highlights the rapid response of in-stream N processing to rewetting period following a drought. This high resilience to process N should be seen as a vital ecosystem service provided by temporary streams despite annual dry periods.  相似文献

The use of documentary sources has proven useful to identify extremeclimatic events and their variability during the pre-instrumental period. Theaim of this paper is to describe iceberg sightings in the Western SouthAtlantic during the second half of the 18th century, as recorded from Spanishlogbooks. A total of five sightings have been found, two corresponding toisolated bergs and three to outbreaks. The relevance of these results istwofold: they are the first documented iceberg sightings to date and, aboveall, they correspond to very unusual episodes, characterized by a high numberof high-sized bergs and by the relatively low latitude of their location. Itis suggested that they could be associated to cold episodes in Antarctica.  相似文献

During the last glacial termination, the climate system experienced intense global variations whose causes and impacts are not fully defined, particularly for low latitudes. The northwestern Mexico Sky Islands present a climate-sensitive ideal setting to record palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic changes due to their physiographic complexity and location in the ecotone between temperate and tropical ecosystems. High-resolution pollen analysis and a detailed sedimentological study were conducted at the Ciénega Tonibabi tropical thorn scrub site. The 15 540–0 cal a bp nearly continuous record shows that the North Atlantic Ocean did have a cold and humid climatic influence during the glacial stages of the end of the Pleistocene, including a sharp pulse during the Younger Dryas. However, a shift to the Pacific Ocean influence occurred during the Holocene, which led to the development of the El Niño conditions prevailing today. Colder and warmer phases follow one another with higher or lower winter precipitation, including a sharp Bølling–Allerød and development and intensification of the North American monsoon. They are reflected in hydrological changes as well as in the advances, retreats and intermingling of coniferous forests and tropical thorn scrub.  相似文献

Effects of masonry infills on the seismic vulnerability of steel frames is studied through multi-scale numerical modelling. First, a micro-modelling approach is utilized to define a homogenized masonry material, calibrated on experimental tests, which is used for modelling the nonlinear response of a one-story, single span, masonry-infilled portal under horizontal loads. Based on results of the micro-model, the constitutive behavior of a diagonal strut macro-element equivalent to the infill panel is calibrated. Then, the diagonal strut is used to model infill panels in the macro-scale analysis of a multi-span multi-story infilled moment-resisting (MR) steel frame. The seismic vulnerability of the MR frame is evaluated through a nonlinear static procedure. Numerical analyses highlight that infills may radically modify the seismic response and the failure mechanism of the frame, hence the importance of the infill correct modelling.  相似文献

Several studies show that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an important factor in determining interannual rainfall variability in South America. This signal is detected in the region including Northeastern Argentina, Uruguay and part of southern Brazil, in the form of excessive rains and big floods in the regional rivers. To check that this relationship was similar in the past the objectives of this paper were to construct a time series of large floods in the Paraná River region from documentary records, during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, and to evaluate the relationship between that historical record of extreme floods, the ENSO documentary evidence (Ortlieb, The Documented Historical Record of El Niño Events in Perú: An Update of the Quinn Record (Ortlieb, sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, Diaz and Markgraf, (eds.), El Niño and the southern oscillation. Multiscale variability and global and regional Impacts. NOAA/NGDC Paleoclimatology Program, Boulder CO, USA, 2000). Considering that the period 1904–2000, where 11 out of 16 floods occurred during El Niño events, it can be concluded that the proportion of years with exceptional flow volume in the Paraná River in years with El Niño events in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was relatively lower than that of the twentieth century.
