Photographic photometry and spectroscopic observations of NGC 4575 suggest it to be a galaxy of reduced dimensionsD×d=14.4×13.5 kpc and of high luminosityM=–20.7. The rotation curve was also determined. Assuming a model of three homogeneous similar spheroids, we derived the density and mass distribution, and their total mass was found to be T =2.33 × 1010.The mass luminosity ratio does not vary withinr=24, indicating that the stellar composition is similar within it, and the ratio T / T 1 suggests that this object contains a high proportion of young stars. From the emission lines it is found that the electronic density Ne100 cm–3 is relatively low in the HII regions. The abundance ratiosN(N)/N(S) andN(N)/N(H) for the nucleus and two emission regions were also derived.  相似文献

A quantitative definition of limiting magnitude for stellar photographs is proposed, together with a method of measurement employing a Racine prism. Limiting magnitudes inU, B andV for the Isaac Newton telescope at Herstmonceux derived from a total of 72 prime focus photographs are presented and the results correlated with the size of the photographed image. The limiting magnitude for an extrapolated value of the seeing of 1 isB=22m.0, in good agreement with a value obtained by scaling the limiting magnitudes of the 200 inch telescope.  相似文献

With the soft X-ray detector (0.2–0.284 keV) aboard the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) we have searched for X-ray emission from hot star coronae and peculiar stars. On Sirius ( CMa) and Capella ( Aur) X-ray emission has been measured at 6 and 5 level, respectively, above background. In all other cases the search revealed no evidence for soft X-ray emission. Upper limits to the luminosities of about 25 star coronae (main-sequence stars, (sub)giants, and supergiants) and of 4 peculiar stars ( Sco, Lyr, P Cyg, and Car) have been obtained.Paper presented at the COSPAR/IAU Symposium on Fast Transients in X-and Gamma-Rays, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 29–31 May, 1975.  相似文献

Calculations are presented of the amount of excess ionization produced in the lower ionosphere by various transient X- and -ray bursts under different assumptions about the incident spectrum and the ion recombination rates in the ionosphere. These calculations show that the bursts will have only a small effect on the ionosphere, due in part to their short duration. An experiment has been started to measure the power spectrum of the phase and amplitude of the night-time fluctuations of a CW signal in order to determine if it is possible to improve the sensitivity of the ionospheric technique by using the transient nature of the bursts. It is shown how it is possible to explain the low abundance of iron and siderophiles in the Moon in a natural way. This is done by an extension of Öpik's mechanism, whereby one or more planetoids pass through Earth's Roche zone, are broken up, and have part of their material captured. Assuming the planetoids are differentiated, the iron core can easily escape capture. This process does not involve any dissipation mechanisms and goes a long way toward explaining the peculiar bulk composition of the Moon. The picture is consistent with that of Urey, in which the early solar system contained more (and smaller) planets than it does today. In the second part of the paper, dynamical considerations are applied for two models, and it is shown that capture from one (or a few) planetoids is quite feasible, whereas a large number of contributors is highly unlikely.  相似文献

The July 12, 1973, occultation of Europa by Io was observed in 30 wavelength channels in the spectral region λλ3200-11, 000 Å with the 200-inch Hale telescope and a multichannel spectrometer. The data are presented in absolute units above the Earth's atmosphere. The data are analyzed to obtain the spectral reflectivity of seven localized areas on the disk of Europa centered on 324°W longitude. The equatorial material is confirmed to be darker than the eastward-skewed bright north polar cap and a hint is evident that the darker material as well may be somewhat redder than the cap material.  相似文献

On 11 September 1973 a peculiar prominence was observed. The prominence displayed strong ( 50km s–1) systematic motions toward and away from the observer.
