In most of the developing countries, cities are expanding due to urbanization. To cope-up with problem, planners/decision makers need up-to-date physical data base for proper planning and management of the cities. Such data base can be generated quickly through aerial/satellite remote sensing techniques. In this ‘Case Study’ of Chiangmai, Thailand, sequential aerial photographs and SPOT image were used for urban landuse change studies. A comparison was also made for the growth studies of SPOT and aerial photographs. The analysis of study revealed that maximum agriculture land was converted to urban landuse. Urban growth of the city found to be 3.5 times less in case of SPOT results compared to aerial photographs. Urban landuse change was observed all around the city. 相似文献

The present study clearly shows the influence of dust storms on chlorophyll bloom in the offshore region of the Arabian Sea,
with a time lag of few days, during the pre-monsoon season. Various satellite derived parameters over the Arabian Sea, Himalayan
and Tibet snow covered regions show large changes due to the influence of dust storms. The MODIS snow albedo gives unreliable
values under the influence of dust storms due to increase in the aerosol loading over these regions and snow albedo product
must be used in combination with snow pixel counts during the dust storm season. A detailed study is required for the quantitative
evaluation of dust storms on the chlorophyll blooms in the Arabian Sea region and on the snow parameters in the Himalayan

This paper describes the hydrographic observations in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) during two cruises carried out in
March–June 2003 as part of the Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment. The surface hydrography during March–April was dominated by
the intrusion of low-salinity waters from the south; during May–June, the low-salinity waters were beginning to be replaced
by the highsalinity waters from the north. There was considerable mixing at the bottom of the surface mixed layer, leading
to interleaving of low-salinity and high-salinity layers. The flow paths constructed following the spatial patterns of salinity
along the sections mimic those inferred from numerical models. Time-series measurements showed the presence of Persian Gulf
and Red Sea Waters in the SEAS to be intermittent during both cruises: they appeared and disappeared during both the fortnight-long

Sedimentary methane (CH4) fluxes and oxidation rates were determined over the wet and dry seasons (four measurement campaigns) in Pulicat lake, an
extensive shallow estuary in south India. Dissolved CH4 concentrations were measured at 52 locations in December 2000. The annual mean net CH4 flux from Pulicat lake sediments was 3.7 × 109 g yr-1 based on static chamber measurements. A further 1.7 × 109g yr-1 was estimated to be oxidized at the sediment-water interface. The mean dissolved concentration of CH4 was 242nmol |-1 (ranging between 94 and 501 nmol |-1) and the spatial distribution could be explained by tidal dynamics and freshwater input. Sea-air exchange estimates using
models, account only for ∼13% (0.5 × 109 g yr-1) of the total CH4 produced in sediments, whereas ebullition appeared to be the major route for loss to the atmosphere (∼ 63% of the net sediment
flux). We estimated the total atmospheric source of CH4 from Pulicat lake to be 0.5 to 4.0 × 109g yr-1. 相似文献

Numerical experiment with improved boundary layer physics has been performed to study the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) characteristics over the monsoon trough region. Details of the evolution and structure of the associated boundary layer processes in the monsoon trough and adjoining oceanic regions are examined by integrating the model up to a period of 48 hours. The model used for this study is a high resolution primitive equation, one with 0·5o latitude/longitude horizontal resolution and 16 levels in the vertical (7 levels in the PBL). The boundary layer treatment in the model is based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory for the surface layer and Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) formulation based onE-ε approach for the mixed layer. The model is integrated using the FGGE level IIIb analysis of European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), U.K. The study shows that the diurnal variation of TKE over land is a dominant feature comparing with that over the ocean. Along the monsoon trough region, TKE increases from the eastern end to the western side which is mainly associated with the enhancement of sensible heat flux as we move from the eastern wet land to the western desert sector. It may be noted that the low level wind maximum, which is a characteristic feature over the monsoon region, is well simulated by this improved model physics. 相似文献

Tropical cyclones are the most hazardous weather systems, which form over warm ocean waters. The frequencies of tropical cyclones show variabilities over all the oceanic basins, during the El-Niño and El-Niño Modoki years. Recent studies have shown significant impact of air–sea interaction processes like El-Niño and El-Niño Modoki on the cyclone activity over different ocean basins. The results suggest in most cases, El-Niño events suppress the formation of cyclones over various basins. A recent study indicated that concurrent occurrence of El-Niño Modoki and positive Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) events can generate more cyclones over north-west Pacific. We propose to study the impact of El-Niño Modoki events on the formation of tropical cyclones over north Indian Ocean (NIO). Our present study suggests that the cyclogenesis over the NIO is a complex phenomenon, as it is influenced by several coupled ocean atmospheric phenomena such as El-Niño, El-Niño Modki, IOD and Madden–Julian oscillation. 相似文献

Blasting is sometimes inevitable in civil engineering work, to fragment the massive rock to enable excavation and leveling. In Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat also, blasting is implemented to fragment the rock mass, to reduce the in situ rock level to the required platform for a building construction. However, during blasting work, some rocks get an excessive amount of explosive energy and this energy may generate flyrock. An accident occurred on 15 July 2015 due to this phenomenon, in which one of the workers was killed and two other workers were seriously injured after being hit by the flyrock. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of the flyrock accidents through evaluation of rock mass geological structures. The discontinuities present on the rock face were analyzed, to study how they affected the projection and direction of the flyrock. Rock faces with lower mean joint spacing and larger apertures caused excessive flyrock. Based on the steoreonet analysis, it was found that slope failures also produced a significant effect on the direction, if the rock face failure lay in the critical zone area. Empirical models are often used to predict flyrock projection. In this study five empirical models are used to compare the incidents. It was found that none of the existing formulas could accurately predict flyrock distance. Analysis shows that the gap between predicted and actual flyrock can be reduced by including blast deign and geological conditions in forecasts. Analysis revealed only 69% of accuracy could be achieved if blast design is the only parameter to be considered in flyrock projection and the rest is influenced by the geological condition. Other causes of flyrock are discussed. Comparison of flyrock prediction with face bursting, cratering and rifling is carried out with recent prediction models. 相似文献

A hydrologic regression sediment-yield model was established to determine the relationship between water discharge and suspended sediment discharge at the Blue Nile and the Atbara River outlet stations during the flood season. The model consisted of two main submodels: (1) a suspended sediment discharge model, which was used to determine suspended sediment discharge for each basin outlet; and (2) a sediment rating model, which related water discharge and suspended sediment discharge for each outlet station. Due to the absence of suspended sediment concentration measurements at or near the outlet stations, a minimum norm solution, which is based on the minimization of the unknowns rather than the residuals, was used to determine the suspended sediment discharges at the stations. In addition, the sediment rating submodel was regressed by using an observation equations procedure. Verification analyses on the model were carried out and the mean percentage errors were found to be +12.59 and –12.39, respectively, for the Blue Nile and Atbara. The hydrologic regression model was found to be most sensitive to the relative weight matrix, moderately sensitive to the mean water discharge ratio, and slightly sensitive to the concentration variation along the River Nile's course. 相似文献

Hydrographic data collected on board ORV Sagar Kanya in the southern Bay of Bengal during the BOBMEX-Pilot programme (October–November
1998) have been used to describe the thermohaline structure and circulation in the upper 200 m water column of the study region.
The presence of seasonal Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over the study area, typically characterized with enhanced
cloudiness and flanked by the respective east/northeast winds on its northern part and west/southwest winds on its southern
part, has led to net surface heat loss of about 55 W/m2. The sea surface dynamic topography relative to 500 db shows that the upper layer circulation is characterised by a cyclonic
gyre encompassing the study area. The eastward flowing Indian Monsoon Current (IMC) between 5‡N and 7‡N in the south and its
northward branching along 87‡E up to 13‡N appear to feed the cyclonic gyre. The Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler
(VM-ADCP) measured currents confirm the presence of the cyclonic gyre in the southern Bay of Bengal during the withdrawing
phase of the southwest monsoon from the northern/central parts of the Bay of Bengal. 相似文献
