We report here on high angular resolution observations of solar noise storm sources at a frequency of 75 MHz. The data for the study were obtained at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory (long.: 77°2612 E, lat.: 13°3612 N) about 100 km north of Bangalore, India, during the solar eclipse of 24 October 1995. Our main conclusion is that there are structures of angular size 2.5 arc min in the outer solar corona.  相似文献

This paper describes the hydrographic observations in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) during two cruises carried out in March–June 2003 as part of the Arabian Sea Monsoon Experiment. The surface hydrography during March–April was dominated by the intrusion of low-salinity waters from the south; during May–June, the low-salinity waters were beginning to be replaced by the highsalinity waters from the north. There was considerable mixing at the bottom of the surface mixed layer, leading to interleaving of low-salinity and high-salinity layers. The flow paths constructed following the spatial patterns of salinity along the sections mimic those inferred from numerical models. Time-series measurements showed the presence of Persian Gulf and Red Sea Waters in the SEAS to be intermittent during both cruises: they appeared and disappeared during both the fortnight-long time series.  相似文献

The impact of vegetated filter strips (VFS) on sediment removal from runoff has been studied extensively in recent years. Vegetation is believed to increase water infiltration and decrease water turbulence thus enhancing sediment deposition within filter media. In the study reported here, field experiments have been conducted to examine the efficiency of vegetated filter strips for sediment removal from cropland runoff. Twenty filters with varying length, slope and vegetated cover were used under simulated runoff conditions with an average sediment concentration of 2700 mg/L. The filters were 2, 5, 10 and 15 m long with a slope of 2·3 and 5% and three types of vegetation. Three other strips with bare soil were used as a control. The experimental results showed that the average sediment trapping efficiency of all filters was 84% and ranging from 68% in a 2‐m filter to as high as 98% in a 15‐m long filter compared with only 25% for the control. The length of filter has been found to be the predominant factor affecting sediment deposition in VFS up to 10 m. Increasing filter length to 15 m did not improve sediment trapping efficiency under the present experimental conditions. The rate of incoming flow and vegetation cover percentage has a secondary effect on sediment deposition in VFS. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A generalized model for predicting the potential of geographic areas for mineral exploration is developed using computers and mathematical techniques. A cellular approach is adopted and each area is divided into cells; the data base is transformed into a computer processable form by digitizing data over each cell. Control cells are selected from a control area by two a priori subjective models using multiple linear regression and filtering techniques. These control cells are used to develop weighting factors for computer-transformed variables. The evaluation and prediction of cells are made using an evaluation model, wherein products of weighting factors and corresponding transformed variables are added to give a probability score for each cell. In the example analysis, 7.76% of cells are selected as predicted cells and checked for mining in the cell areas by comparing them with a mining data base. Of the total predicted cells, 38.13% are classified as first-order prospects and the remaining predicted cells are classified into second- and third-order prospects. Using the satellite derived sea surface temperature (SST) data for 1979 (bad monsoon) and 1983 (good monsoon), the SST variability for two contrasting monsoon seasons is studied. The study indicates that large negative anomalies off the Somali and Arabian coasts are associated with good monsoon rainfall over India. The strong monsoonal cooling in these regions can be attributed to strong low level winds and intense upwelling. The reappearance of 27°C isotherm off Somali coast in May/June coincides with the onset of southwest monsoon over India. Further, the influence of zonal anomaly of SST off Somalia Coast (SCZASST) and Central Indian Ocean Zonal Anomaly of SST (CIOZASST) with monsoon rainfall over India is brought out. The former is negatively related to the monsoon rainfall over western and central parts of India, whilst CIOZASST is positively related.  相似文献

In most of the developing countries, cities are expanding due to urbanization. To cope-up with problem, planners/decision makers need up-to-date physical data base for proper planning and management of the cities. Such data base can be generated quickly through aerial/satellite remote sensing techniques. In this ‘Case Study’ of Chiangmai, Thailand, sequential aerial photographs and SPOT image were used for urban landuse change studies. A comparison was also made for the growth studies of SPOT and aerial photographs. The analysis of study revealed that maximum agriculture land was converted to urban landuse. Urban growth of the city found to be 3.5 times less in case of SPOT results compared to aerial photographs. Urban landuse change was observed all around the city.  相似文献

Summary Monthly mean surface fields of different meteorological parameters and evaporation are studied for the 1979 (poor monsoon) and 1983 (good monsoon) monsoon seasons over the Arabian Sea, in order to understand the role of evaporation on the Indian monsoon rainfall. It is noticed that in general, the sea surface temperatures are higher in 1983 throughout the monsoon season than in 1979 in the Arabian Sea excepting western region. The mean rates of evaporation on a seasonal scale are found to be equal in both years (3.66×1010 and 3.59×1010 tons/day in 1979 and 1983, respectively). No coherence is observed between the evaporation and the west coast rainfall within a season. It is also noted that the pressure distribution over the Arabian Sea is even important to advect the moisture towards the west coast of India, through winds.With 10 Figures  相似文献

Summary In this paper, an attempt is made to examine the influence of the physical forcings of an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) in the reduction of the systematic errors of the tropical forecasts. A number of major modifications in the parameterization of physical processes were carried out in the operational forecasting system of the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) during the period 1984–88 largely in an attempt to reduce the conceptual weaknesses in their formulation. A large number of studies (Slingo et al., 1988; Tiedtke et al., 1988; etc) have demonstrated the positive impact on the reduction of tropical forecast errors to various changes in the treatment of physical processes in the ECMWF model.Keeping in view of these facts, the evaluation of the systematic errors of the ECMWF tropical forecasts is carried out for a period prior to the incorporation of major modifications in the parameterization of physical processes (1984) and corresponding period after such major changes are implemented in the operational AGCM of ECMWF (1988). The paper describes a detailed comparison of the tropical forecast errors for summer monsoon seasons (June-August [JJA]) of 1984 and 1988 in order to bring out the impact on tropical simulation of various improvements in the treatment of physical processes.The results demonstrate a dramatic reduction in the systematic errors of the tropical circulation together with an enhancement of the hydrological cycle to a realistic climatological level with the incorporation of major changes in the treatment of physical processes. Similar improvements are also observed in the winter simulation. In spite of major improvements in the simulation of tropical circulation, the nature of the tropical systematic errors of the ECMWF AGCM, however, remains unchanged. Thus, the inference of the study indicates the requirement of a new approach to the problem of parameterization of physical processes particularly, convection, radiation, boundary layer and their interactions for further reduction of the tropical forecast errors.With 14 Figures  相似文献
