For the first time, chemical characterization of PM10 aerosols was attempted over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and Arabian Sea (AS) during the ICARB campaign. Dominance of SO 4 2? , NH 4 + and NO 3 ? was noticed over both the regions which indicated the presence of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate as major water soluble particles playing a very important role in the radiation budget. It was observed that all the chemical constituents had higher concentrations over Bay of Bengal as compared to Arabian Sea. Higher concentrations were observed near the Indian coast showing influence of landmass indicating that gaseous pollutants like SO2, NH3 and NO x are transported over to the sea regions which consequently contribute to higher SO 4 2? , NH 4 + and NO 3 ? aerosols respectively. The most polluted region over BoB was 13°?19°N and 70°?90°E while it was near 11°N and 75°E over AS. Although the concentrations were higher over Bay of Bengal for all the chemical constituents of PM10 aerosols, per cent non-sea salt (nss) fraction (with respect to Na) was higher over Arabian Sea. Very low Ca2+ concentration was observed at Arabian Sea which led to higher atmospheric acidity as compared to BoB. Nss SO 4 2? alone contributed 48% of total water soluble fraction over BoB as well as AS. Ratios SO 4 2? /NO ? 3 over both the regions (7.8 and 9 over BoB and AS respectively) were very high as compared to reported values at land sites like Allahabad (0.63) and Kanpur (0.66) which may be due to very low NO.3 over sea regions as compared to land sites. Air trajectory analysis showed four classes: (i) airmass passing through Indian land, (ii) from oceanic region, (iii) northern Arabian Sea and Middle East and (iv) African continent. The highest nss SO 4 2? was observed during airmasses coming from the Indian land side while lowest concentrations were observed when the air was coming from oceanic regions. Moderate concentrations of nss SO2. 4 were observed when air was seen moving from the Middle East and African continent. The pH of rainwater was observed to be in the range of 5.9–6.5 which is lower than the values reported over land sites. Similar feature was reported over the Indian Ocean during INDOEX indicating that marine atmosphere had more free acidity than land atmosphere. 相似文献

In this study, we have used multi-satellite data to retrieve aerosol loadings and carbon monoxide (CO) pollution over the Arabian Sea, caused due to anthropogenic activities over the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) in India. Relatively high aerosol and CO loadings during 9–14 November 2007 over Arabian Sea were attributed to crop residues burning in the IGP and fireworks during Diwali festival. Aerosol index (AI) obtained from ozone monitoring instrument (OMI) and CO from measurements of pollution in the troposphere instrument (MOPITT). CO showed higher values over the Arabian Sea suggesting long-range transport of anthropogenic aerosols and trace gases from the continental to Arabian Sea region. 相似文献

Geospatial assessment of soil erosion vulnerability at watershed level in some sections of the Upper Subarnarekha river basin, Jharkhand, India 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Undulating landscapes of Chhotanagpur plateau of the Indian state of Jharkhand suffer from soil erosion vulnerability of varying degrees. An investigation was undertaken in some sections of the Upper Subarnarekha River Basin falling within this state. An empirical equation known as Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was utilized for estimating the soil loss. Analysis of remote sensing satellite data, digital elevation model (DEM) and geographical information system (GIS)–based geospatial approach together with USLE led to the soil erosion assessment. Erosion vulnerability assessment was performed by analyzing raster grids of topography acquired from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global DEM data. LANDSAT TM and ETM+ satellite data of March 2001 and March 2011 were used for inferring the land use–land cover characteristics of the watershed for these years, respectively. USLE equation was computed within the GIS framework to derive annual soil erosion rates and also the areas with varying degrees of erosion vulnerability. Erosion vulnerability units thus identified covered five severity classes of erosion ranging from very low (0–5 ton ha?1 yr?1) to very severe (> 40 ton ha?1 yr?1). Results indicated an overall increase of erosion in the year 2011 as compared to the erosion computed for the year 2001. Maximum soil erosion rate during the year 2001 was found up to 40 ton ha?1 yr?1, whereas this went up to 49.80 ton ha?1 yr?1 for the year 2011. Factors for the increase in overall erosion could be variation in rainfall, decrease in vegetation or protective land covers and most important but not limited to the increase in built-up or impervious areas as well. 相似文献

In recent major earthquakes, the researchers have found the need for consideration of vertical seismic acceleration for the stability analysis of the man-made and natural slopes. However, in most past studies, the performance of slopes has been assessed by accounting only the horizontal seismic component of the ground motion, without giving due weightage to the effect of vertical component. In the present study, analytical expressions are derived to determine the factor of safety, yield seismic coefficient and consequently the seismic displacement of cohesionless soil slope under combined horizontal and vertical components of the ground motion. The derivation uses the Newmark’s sliding block approach, in which the soil slope with a planar failure surface within the framework of conventional pseudo-static analysis is assumed to follow the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of vertical seismic coefficient on the stability of cohesionless slope have been studied through a set of graphical presentations for a specific range of soil parameters. It is observed that overlooking the effect of the vertical component of the ground motion on factor of safety and the displacement while designing the slope may be detrimental, resulting in the slope failure. The general expressions presented in this paper may be highly useful in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering practice for designing the cohesionless soil slopes under combined horizontal and vertical seismic loads. 相似文献

This paper reports the measurement of radon concentration in well water at the site of Jalpaiguri (26°32′N, 88°46′E) near
the active fault zone of West Bengal, India. Radon concentration has been measured in well water with the help of solid-state
nuclear track detectors (SSNTD). The study indicates a positive correlation between radon anomaly and earthquake. The data

The lowest unit of the Talchir Formation of Talchir Basin, Orissa, was described by pioneer workers as the ‘basal boulder
bed’. In an attempt to explain the co-existence of gravel and clay, materials of contrasting hydraulic properties, a probable
situation resembling the effects of the action of ground-ice enabled boulders to be carried down by sluggish currents resulting
in an intermixture of large boulders and fine mud was conceived. Misinterpretation of this conclusion led to a general tendency
to describe the ‘basal boulder bed’ as ‘glacial tillite’. However, the unit described as ‘basal boulder bed’ is actually represented
by a matrix rich conglomerate with pockets of normally graded silty clay. The present study reveals that the depositional
imprints preserved in this part of the sedimentary succession indicate emplacement of successive debris flows generated through
remobilization of pre-existing unconsolidated sediments. Small pockets of fine-grained turbidites presumably deposited from
the entrained turbidity currents associated with the debris flows suggest the composite character of the debris flow deposit. 相似文献

Quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF) has been attempted over the Narmada Catchment following a statistical approach.
The catchment has been divided into five sub-regions for the development of QPF models with a maximum lead-time of 24 hours.
For this purpose the data of daily rainfall from 56 raingauge stations, twice daily observations on different surface meteorological
parameters from 28 meteorological observatories and upper air data from 11 aerological stations for the nine monsoon seasons
of 1972–1980 have been utilized. The horizontal divergence, relative vorticity, vertical velocity and moisture divergence
are computed using the kinematic method at different pressure levels and used as independent variables along with the rainfall
and surface meteorological parameters. Multiple linear regression equations have been developed using the stepwise procedure
separately with actual and square root and log-transformed rainfall using 8-year data (1972–1979). When these equations were
verified with an independent data for the monsoon season of 1980, it was found that the transformed rainfall equations fared
much better compared to the actual rainfall equations. The performance of the forecasts of QPF model compared to the climatological
and persistence forecasts has been assessed by computing the verification scores using the forecasts for the monsoon season

In order to achieve a better understanding of the nature of the factors influencing ground water composition as well as to
specify them quantitatively, multivariate statistical analysis (factor analysis) were performed on the hydrochemical data
of this area. R-mode factor analysis was carried out on the geochemical results of the 79-groundwater samples and the factor
scores were transferred to areal maps. Fundamental chemical parameters of the groundwater have been compounded together for
characterizing and interpreting a few empirical hydrogeochemical factors controlling the chemical nature of water. R-mode
factor analysis reveals that the groundwater chemistry of the study area reflects the influence of anthropogenic activities,
silicate weathering reactions, precipitation, dissolution and subsequent percolation into the groundwater. The data have been
put into few major factors and the seasonal variation in the chemistry of water has been clearly brought out by these factors.
Factor scores were transferred to contour diagrams and the factor score analysis has been used successfully to delineate the
stations under study with various factors and the seasonal effect on the sample stations. 相似文献

An investigation of U-Pb isotopic systematics in zircons from mylonitized Henderson Gneiss (Sinha and Glover 1978) revealed that selected zircon fractions from the mylonite zone suffered total loss of radiogenic Pb at 460 m.y. To further investigate the relationship between Pb loss, U gain, and grain size reduction associated with increasing strain in the shear zone, we have characterized the chemistry and morphology of zircons in the mylonitic rocks, using both electron microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy.SEM photographs of the zircons indicate that strain-correlated fracturing and size reduction of the zircons accompanied Pb loss throughout the mylonite zone. Stresses imposed by the expansion of initially U-rich, -damaged portions of the crystal resulted in microfracturing of the more brittle crystalline material proximal to the U-rich zones. During mylonitization, fractures propagated preferentially along these zones allowing metamorphic fluids to penetrate the easily-leached, -damaged portions of the zircons. Removal of 75% of the radiogenic Pb from zircons in the least-deformed zone of the mylonites may have occurred via this mechanism.Irregular, porous zircon overgrowths are also evident from the SEM photographs. Overgrowths are strongly enriched in U, Y and P with respect to the relict, Henderson Gneiss-derived cores, and tend to increase in volume from the protomylonite to the blastomylonite. Thus, the development of overgrowths on the zircons accounts for the U gain observed by Sinha and Glover (1978), and indicates that the transport of high field strength cations (e.g., Zr4+, Hf4+, U4+, etc.) occurred during prograde mylonitization at 460 m.y.A retrograde shearing event at 273 m.y. caused no further disturbance in the U-Pb isotopic systematics of the zircons. Pb retention by zircons during the later episode may have been the result of 1) the participation of H2O-rich, relatively noncorrosive fluids and/or 2) the lack of further fracturing and size reduction in a strain gradient of lower magnitude than the prograde event. 相似文献
