The higher-order correlation functions for the concentrationfluctuations arising from a two-point-source configuration have beencalculated analytically within the context of the phenomenology of afluctuating plume model (viz., a meandering plume model that explicitlyincorporates internal fluctuations). Explicit expressions for thesecond-, third-, and fourth-order correlationfunctions between the concentrationfluctuations produced by two point sources are given in terms of the sourceseparation d and the five physically based parameters that define thegeneralized fluctuating plume model: namely, the absolute plume dispersion,a, which determines the outer plume length scale; the relative plume dispersion, r, which determines the inner plume length scale; the fluctuation intensity, ir, in relative coordinates, which determines the internal concentration fluctuation level; the correlation coefficient, r,between the positions of the centroids of the two interfering plumes; and,the correlation coefficient, r*, between the concentration fluctuationsof the two plumes in relative coordinates, which determines the degree ofinternal mixing of the two scalars. Furthermore, the form of the totalconcentration probability density function arising from the interferenceproduced by two point sources is presented. Predictions for the second-ordercorrelation function, , and for the total concentration probabilitydensity function have been compared with some new experimental data fora two-point-source configuration in grid turbulence generated in awater-channel simulation. These results are in good agreement with the dataand suggest that the analytical model for the second-order correlationfunction and the total concentration probability density function canreproduce many qualitative trends in the interaction of plumes from twosources.  相似文献

Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, is an estuary used as a harbor for a military installation and for recreation, fishing, and research purposes. Rapid shoaling of the bay had been reported and attributed to increased stream erosion and sedimentation from the newly suburbanized watershed. Comparison of a 1976 bathymetric survey of Kaneohe Bay with that of a 1927 survey indicates an average shoaling of the lagoonal area of 1.0 m. Average shoaling for the north and middle bay at 0.6m/49 years (1.2 cm yr−1 is lower than for the south bay at 1.5m/49 years (3.1 cm yr−1). The total lagoonal fill in the 49-year period is about 1.95× 107 m3, assigned as follows: 64% carbonate detritus from the reefs as well as growth of living coral and unrecorded dredging spill, 9% recorded dredging spoils, and only 27% terrigenous sediment. Seismic reflection profiles distinguish spoil from natural sediment and show that the infilling sediment is trapped between, burying reef structures built during Quaternary lower stands of the sea. There had been little obvious change between 1882 and 1927 surveys. All information suggests that increased shoaling rates since 1927 are due to reported and unreported disposal of dredge spoil, mainly from 1939 to 1945 for ship and seaplane channels in the south bay, and not from increased runoff and urbanization around the south bay. One of the more promising techniques in soft ground tunneling through urbanized areas is the use of artificially frozen ground for temporary tunnel support. This paper describes the general design considerations involved in the ground freezing method. Various factors are discussed which influence the selection of the freezing temperature, the thickness of the frozen zones and the spacing of the freeze pipes. The time required to achieve freezing is discussed in addition to the amount and rate of frost heave caused by the freezing.

To illustrate the applicability of the freezing method, various considerations in the design of an 8-ft. diameter tunnel in upstate New York, a 75-ft. diameter tunnel in Georgia, and a 12 1/2-ft. diameter tunnel in Washington, D.C. are discussed. All three of the tunnels were to pass immediately beneath mainline railroad tracks. A laboratory testing program was implemented to determine the effects of the repetitive train loads on the zone of frozen soil around the tunnel perimeter. Stress-controlled repeated load triaxial tests were performed on both undisturbed and remolded samples frozen from temperatures of −7°C for the New York tunnel to −10°C for the Atlanta and Washington tunnels. Static testing consisted of both quick triaxial tests and creep tests on frozen samples of the various soil types.

It was found that there was little difference between the cumulative strain response from repeated load tests and static tests for the low frequencies investigated (one-quarter to one-half cycles per minute). Hyperbolic stress—strain functions were developed to simulate the stress—strain relationship for various cumulative loading times.

The stresses and strains in the frozen soil tunnel configuration were computed by the finite element method, using both linear and hyperbolic stress—strain functions. Tangent modulus values were varied to reflect the decreasing modulus with increasing loading time. The analyses indicated that zones of frozen soil of approximately 3 ft. thick were required for both the New York and Washington tunnels. However, high tensile stresses were calculated for the Atlanta tunnel, precluding the use of the freezing method.  相似文献

Summary The basic thesis of this paper is that the proper scope of meteorology should include, besides the earth's atmosphere, the sun's atmosphere (the solar corona), the associated interplanetary magnetic field, and lunar modulation of this environment. Recent advances in space science have enabled us to make direct measurements in this region for the first time. The shape and characteristics of the magnetosphere have been completely redefined during the last ten years from a simple magnetic dipole to the present model with an elongated tail stretched out by the solar wind. The interplanetary magnetic field has been defined with its spiral structure and sectors tied into the solar surface. This provides a magnetic link between the sun and earth. It is probable that extra-terrestrial factors do play a role in regulating weather, although the extent of this influence remains to be determined. Possibly such effects are most significant or easily detectable in the realm of atmospheric electricity. In view of the limitations in our present knowledge of all the variables responsible for regulating weather, it would seem appropriate to pursue the study of extra-terrestrial influences. Such research could lead to a better understanding of atmospheric circulation, precipitation mechanisms and thunderstorms. The field of meteorology which might particularly benefit from such research is long range weather forecasting.  相似文献

To investigate regional and interannual variability of the ecosystem in the Southern Ocean, a coupled circumpolar ice–ocean–plankton model has been developed. The ice–ocean component (known as BRIOS-2) is based on a modified version of the s-coordinate primitive equation model (SPEM) coupled to a dynamic–thermodynamic sea-ice model. The biological model (BIMAP) comprises two biogeochemical cycles – silica and nitrogen – and a prognostic iron compartment to include possible effects of micronutrient limitation. Simulations with the coupled ice–ocean–plankton model indicate that the physical–biological interaction is not limited to the effect of a varying surface mixed-layer depth. In the Pacific sector, large anomalies in winter mixed-layer depth cause an increased iron supply and enhance primary production and plankton biomass in the following summer, whereas in the Atlantic sector variability in primary production is caused mainly by fluctuations of oceanic upwelling. Thus, the Antarctic Circumpolar Wave (ACW) induces regional oscillations of phytoplankton biomass in both sectors, but not a propagating signal. Furthermore, interannual variability in plankton biomass and primary production is strong in the Coastal and Continental Shelf Zone and the Seasonal Ice Zone around the Antarctic continent. Interannual variability induced by the ACW has large effects on the regional scale, but the associated variability in biogenic carbon fluxes is small compared to the long-term carbon sequestration of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Lincolns municipal wellfield consists of 44 wells developed in an alluvial aquifer adjacent to the Platte River near Ashland, Nebraska Induced recharge from the river is the primary source of water for the wellfield. Wafer samples were collected on a periodic basis from the Platte River arid two transects of monitoring wells. These samples were analyzed for the herbicide atrazine, which was used as a tracer of induced recharge in this stream-aquifer system. Atrazine concentrations in the river and aquifer were much less than 1.0 ppb during late fall and winter, but increased to as high as 18.9 ppb during spring and summer, associated with runoff from upgradient agricultural lands. There was approximately a 21-day lag time from the first detection of increasing atrazine concentration in the river to the first detection in monitoring wells immediately adjacent to the river. This lag time was relatively constant throughout the year and from one year to the next, even with major fluctuations of river stage and wellfield production. This consistency of lag time indicated that the travel times from the river to the first set of monitoring wells immediately adjacent to the river were fairly constant.
Paths of preferential flow were identified in the aquifer at a depth of 25 to 35 feet below land surface. This aquifer zone appeared to play a significant role in movement of water from beneath the river into the wellfield.
Aquifer dispersivity was calculated using a method described by Hoehn and Santschi (1987). Macrodispersivity (AL) was shown to increase linearly over the scale of the wellfield. Calculated values of AL were within limits of other reported values for this type of aquifer material and agreed well with values reported by Hoehn and Santschi (1987); These findings will be extremely beneficial for planning and management of the municipal wellfield.  相似文献
