The gravitational instability of an infinite homogenous rotating plasma through a porous medium in the presence of a uniform magnetic field with finite electrical and thermal conductivities has been studied. With the help of relevant linearized perturbation equations of the problem, a general dispersion relation is obtained, which is further reduced for the special cases of rotation, parallel and perpendicular to the megnetic field acting in the vertical direction. Longitudinal and transverse modes of propagation are discussed separately. It is found that the joint effect of various parameters is simply to modify the Jeans's condition of instability. The effect of finite electrical conductivity is to remove the effect of magnetic field where as the effect of thermal conductivity is to replace the adiabatic velocity of sound by the isothermal one. Rotation has its effect only along the magnetic field in the transverse mode of propagation for an inviscid plasma, thereby stabilizing the system. Porosity reduces the effect of both, the magnetic field and the rotation, in the transverse mode of propagation in both the cases of rotation. The effect of viscosity is to remove the rotational effects parallel to the magnetic field in the transverse mode of propagation. 相似文献

It is known for over two decades now that the rotation of the photospheric magnetic fields determined by two different methods
of correlation analysis leads to two vastly differing rotation laws - one the differential and the other rigid rotation. Snodgrass
and Smith (2001) reexamining this puzzle show that the averaging of the correlation amplitudes can tilt the final profile
in favour of rigid rotation whenever the contribution of the rigidly rotating large-scale magnetic structures (the plumes)
to the correlation dominates over that of the differentially rotating small-scale and mesoscale features. We present arguments
to show that the large-scale unipolar structures in latitudes >40 deg, which also show rigid rotation (Stenflo, 1989), are
formed mainly from the intranetwork magnetic elements (abbreviated as IN elements). We then estimate the anchor depths of
the various surface magnetic elements as locations of the Sun's internal plasma layers that rotate at the same rate as the
flux elements, using the rotation rates of the internal plasma layers given by helioseismology. We infer that the anchor depths
of the flux broken off from the decay of sunspot active regions (the small-scale and mesoscale features that constitute the
plumes) are located in the shallow layers close to the solar surface. From a similar comparison with helioseismic rotation
rates we infer that the rigid rotation of the large-scale unipolar regions in high latitudes could only be coming from plasma
layers at a radial distance of about 0.66–0.68 R
⊙ from the Sun's centre. Using Stenflo's (1991) ‘balloon man’ analogy, we interpret these layers as the source of the magnetic
flux of the IN elements. If so, the IN flux elements seem to constitute a fundamental component of solar magnetism. 相似文献

Sedimentological (line‐logging) analysis of two drill cores, FC77‐3 and FC67‐3, situated, respectively, in the northwestern and southeastern quadrants of the Flynn Creek impact structure's crater‐moat area reveals that the ~27 m thick crater moat‐filling breccia consists of three subequal parts. These parts, which were deposited during early modification stage of this marine‐target impact structure, are distinguished on the basis of vertical trends in sorting, grain size, and counts of clasts per meter in comparison with other well‐known marine‐target impact structures, namely Lockne, Tvären, and Chesapeake Bay. The lower part is interpreted to represent mainly slump deposits, and the middle part is interpreted to represent a stage intermediate between slump and marine resurge, that is, a traction flow driven by overriding suspension flow. The upper part (size graded, and relatively well sorted and fine grained) is interpreted to represent marine resurge flow only. The upper part is capped by a relatively thin and relatively fine‐grained calcarenite to calcisiltite deposit. 相似文献

Abstract— New observations of the S-type asteroids Gaspra and Ida, especially, by the Galileo spacecraft demonstrate that a “space weathering” process operates, which modifies the reflectance spectra of fresh material to be redder, straighter, and have shallower absorption bands. The weathering process appears similar to but less potent than that observed on the Moon. It operates in the sense that it would tend to convert spectra of ordinary chondrites (OC) to having the spectral traits of S-type asteroids. These results appear to resolve the major obstacles of the long standing “S-type conundrum” about the provenance of ordinary chondrite meteorites. A wide body of recent research, which is reviewed here, builds on previous meteoritical evidence to support a new, developing consensus that the larger S-type asteroids are a diverse assortment of silicaceous assemblages, which includes the ordinary chrondite parent bodies. Recent fairly realistic laboratory simulations of space weathering processes have changed OC spectra to resemble S-type spectra. J. F. Bell's highly regarded earlier paradigm that OC parent bodies would be found only among sub-10 km main-belt asteroids has been tested by an extensive observational survey by R. Binzel and his proteges; the result is that no small, main-belt analog for the OCs has been found, not even the somewhat OC-like object Boznemcová. This article reviews the history of the S-type conundrum, which set the stage for Galileo's historic flybys. I review the findings about Gaspra and Ida, including results about their geology, their geophysical structure and probable origins, and about Ida's small moonlet, Dactyl. Density constraints on Ida set by Dactyl's orbit rule out (for Ida, at least) the classic view of S-types as metallic, stripped cores of differentiated precursor asteroids. New analysis of the Galileo spectral images of Ida is presented that provides strong evidence that space weathering occurs on Ida, and that Ida, and the Koronis family asteroids in general, are plausibly OC-like in composition. After reviewing 1990s developments on the S-type conundrum, I advocate a new perspective that the ordinary chondrite parent bodies are among the S-type asteroids, a diverse grouping that also contains other silicaceous and silicate/metal assemblages, presumably including various stony-irons and primitive achondrites represented in meteorite collections; Gaspra may be such a metal-rich assemblage. 相似文献

NASA's Genesis mission was flown to capture samples of the solar wind and return them to the Earth for measurement. The purpose of the mission was to determine the chemical and isotopic composition of the Sun with significantly better precision than known before. Abundance data are now available for noble gases, magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, aluminum, chromium, iron, and other elements. Here, we report abundance data for hydrogen in four solar wind regimes collected by the Genesis mission (bulk solar wind, interstream low‐energy wind, coronal hole high‐energy wind, and coronal mass ejections). The mission was not designed to collect hydrogen, and in order to measure it, we had to overcome a variety of technical problems, as described herein. The relative hydrogen fluences among the four regimes should be accurate to better than ±5–6%, and the absolute fluences should be accurate to ±10%. We use the data to investigate elemental fractionations due to the first ionization potential during acceleration of the solar wind. We also use our data, combined with regime data for neon and argon, to estimate the solar neon and argon abundances, elements that cannot be measured spectroscopically in the solar photosphere. 相似文献

Io, the innermost Galilean satellite of Jupiter, is a fascinating world. Data taken by Voyager and Galileo instruments have established that it is by far the most volcanic body in the Solar System and suggest that the nature of this volcanism could radically differ from volcanism on Earth. We report on near-IR observations taken in February 2001 from the Earth-based 10-m W. M. Keck II telescope using its adaptive optics system. After application of an appropriate deconvolution technique (MISTRAL), the resolution, ∼100 km on Io's disk, compares well with the best Galileo/NIMS resolution for global imaging and allows us for the first time to investigate the very nature of individual eruptions. On 19 February, we detected two volcanoes, Amirani and Tvashtar, with temperatures differing from the Galileo observations. On 20 February, we noticed a slight brightening near the Surt volcano. Two days later it had turned into an extremely bright volcanic outburst. The hot spot temperatures (>1400 K) are consistent with a basaltic eruption and, being lower limits, do not exclude an ultramafic eruption. These outburst data have been fitted with a silicate-cooling model, which indicates that this is a highly vigorous eruption with a highly dynamic emplacement mechanism, akin to fire-fountaining. Its integrated thermal output was close to the total estimated output of Io, making this the largest ionian thermal outburst yet witnessed. 相似文献

Recent laboratory studies show that the quantum yield, , from O2+ dissociative recombination varies considerably with the degree r of vibrational excitation. However, the suggestion that the high values for deduced from airglow and auroral observations can be explained by invoking vibrational excitation, creates a number of problems. Firstly, the rapid vibrational deactivation of O2+ ions by collisions with O atoms will keep r too low to account for the magnitude of ; secondly, r varies considerably from one atmospheric source to another but its relative values (which should be reliable) do not co-vary with those of ; thirdly, because r increases markedly above the peak of the dissociative recombination layer, the fits which theorists have obtained to the observed volume emission rate profiles would have to be regarded as fortuitious. It is tentatively suggested that is higher in the airglow and aurora than in the laboratory plasma studied by Zipf (1980) because of the electron temperature dependence of the specific recombination coefficient for O2+(v' ? 3) ions.The repulsive state of O2 does not provide a suitable channel for the dissociative recombination.
