Titan’s north polar hydrocarbon lakes offer a unique opportunity to indirectly characterize the statistical properties of Titan’s landscape. The complexity of a shoreline can be related to the complexity of the landscape it is embedded in through fractal theory. We mapped the shorelines of 290 of the north polar titanian lakes in the Cassini synthetic aperture radar dataset. Out of these, we used a subset of 190 lake shorelines for our analysis. The fractal dimensions of the shorelines were calculated via two methods: the divider/ruler method and the box-counting method, at length scales of (1-10) km and found to average 1.27 and 1.32, respectively. The inferred power-spectral exponent of Titan’s topography (β) from theoretical and empirical relations is found to be ?2, which is lower than the values obtained from the global topography of the Earth or Venus. Some of the shorelines exhibit multi-fractal behavior (different fractal dimensions at different scales), which we interpret to signify a transition from one set of dominant surface processes to another. We did not observe any spatial variation in the fractal dimension with latitude; however we do report significant spatial variation of the fractal dimension with longitude. A systematic difference between the dimensions of orthogonal sections of lake shorelines is also noted, which signifies possible anisotropy in Titan’s topography. The topographic information thus gleaned can be used to constrain landscape evolution modeling to infer the dominant surface processes that sculpt the landscape of Titan.  相似文献

In recent times, rapid urbanisation coupled with scarcity of land forces several structures to come up ever closer to each other, which may sometime cause severe damage to the structures from both strength and serviceability point of view, and therefore, a need is felt to devise simplified methods to capture the effect of footing interference. In the present study, an attempt has been made to model the settlement behaviour of two strip footings placed in close spacing on layered soil deposit consisting of a strong top layer underlying a weak bottom layer. Theory of elasticity is employed to derive the governing differential equations and subsequently solved by the finite difference method. The perfectly rough strip footings are considered to be resting on the surface of two-layer soil system, and the soil is assumed to behave as linear elastic material under a range of static foundation load. The effect of various parameters such as the elastic moduli and thickness of two layers, clear spacing between the footings and footing load on the settlement behaviour of closely spaced footings has been determined. The variation of vertical normal stress at the interface of two different soil layers as well as at the base of the failure domain also forms an important part of this study. The results are presented in terms of settlement ratio (ξδ), and their variation is obtained with the change in clear spacing between two footings. The present theoretical investigation indicates that the settlement of closely spaced footings is found to be higher than that of single isolated footing, which further reduces with increase in the spacing between the footings.  相似文献

In the carpet industry of the investigated area in 1980 there were used 100 t of different chemicals, especially dyes and textile auxiliaries. This quantity is to be increased 2.6 times till 1985. This industry does not have any closed-cycle drainage systems for the dyeing and washing plants. Thus, during eight months of the year the effluents infiltrate in the soil or evaporate from pools. The accumulations of wastewater originating contain up to 60 mg/l chromium, so that 1… 10 mg/l chromium occur in the wells of the area. In the few central water-supply plants till now chromium has not been detected. The annual variation of the groundwater shows pronounced maxima of contamination during July to September, which clearly agree with the maxima of the wastewater concentrations. The possible ecological impacts of this uncontrolled spread of substances contained in water also in the nutrient chain are discussed.  相似文献

The equivalent widths of P(51) and R(43) lines of the 1-0 and P(45) and R(56) lines of the 2-1 vibration rotation bands of SiO near 8 m region, have been computed for Zwaan's (1974) sunspot model at the centre of the disc. Dam-related downstream adjustments of riverbeds are normally investigated by analysing the trend in sediment supply and high flow events during the pre- and post-dam periods. The required data for existing predictive models is not measured at river gauges, which limits the application of these tools. We derived the frequency of sediment-transporting streamflow events (T*) and upstream sediment supply (S*) in the pre- and post-dam periods with widely available gauged records and predicted changes in the downstream riverbed by adapting an existing model. Ten gauging stations in the Godavari River Basin, India, located downstream of dams, were chosen as study sites. Annually surveyed cross-sections at each site validated the accuracy of the predicted dam-related downstream changes. Then, a regression equation (R2 = 0.75) was established between T*/S* (independent variable) and changes in the downstream bed elevation (dependent variable) for the Godavari Basin. We recommended that similar local empirical equations be formulated for larger river basins. Models of large-scale rainfall-runoff and sediment transport processes that can account for the influence of dams, such as the Soil & Water Assessment Tool, can be paired with the proposed regression equation to estimate dam-related downstream erosion and deposition with globally available data.  相似文献

Post-perihelion observed emission fluxes at 388 nm (CN) and 516 nm (C2) of the coma of comets Austin (1982g) and Bradfield (1980t) are analysed in the framework of the Haser model. Ratios of Haser model CN and C2 parent production rates with expansion velocity show that each comet behaves normally. For comet Austin (1982g), the Q CN/v and Q c2/v values decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet. For an assumed %; activity of the total spherical surface area of the nucleus, the water vaporization theory coupled with derived water production rates from the International Ultraviolet Explorer H and OH flux data yields a nuclear diameter of about 6 km for comet Austin (1982g). For comet Bradfield (1980t), the derived nuclear diameter is expected to be of about 1 km. In each comet, the dust mass production rates as well as ratio of dust-to-gas mass production rates decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet.  相似文献

The dielectric tensor, modified plasma dispersion function and dispersion relation for Whistler mode instability in an infinite magnetoplasma are obtained in the case of cold plasma injection to background hot anisotropic generalized bi-Lorentzian (κ) plasma in the presence of external perpendicular a.c. electric field. The method of characteristics solutions using perturbed and unperturbed particle trajectories have been used to determine the perturbed distribution function. Integrals and modified plasma dispersion function Zκ *(ξ ) are reduced in power series expansion form. Numerical methods using computer technique have been used to obtained temporal growth rate for magnetospheric plasma at geostationary height. The bi-Lorentzian (κ) plasma is reducible to various forms of distribution function by changing the spectral index κ. The results of bi-Lorentzian (κ) plasma are compared with those of bi-Maxwellian plasma. It has been found that the addition of cold plasma injection gives different frequency spectra. The a.c. frequency of moderate amplitude increases the growth rate and instability in K space to lower range. Growth rate maximum is not affected by a.c. frequencies. However, it shifts the maximum to lower K space in both cases, rather than on the variation of the magnitude. Thus a physical situation like this may explain emission of various high frequency whistler emissions by cold plasma injection. The potential application of controlled plasma experiments in the laboratory and for planetary atmosphere are indicated. I use a gender framework to examine why women need to utilize social networks to discover and resolve problems related to reproductive tract infections (RTI) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In India, women's health is linked with social status and perception of their health needs. This paper provides insight on how social networks are gender‐, location‐, and context‐specific and how they are linked to STD issues. This paper examines why social networks are integral to women. The health‐seeking behavior of rural and urban casual sex workers is examined via Q‐analysis, a language of mapping relationships. Results from Q‐analysis reveal women's use of four systems—kinship, belief, traditional medical, and western medical services. Finally, I conclude with important implications for research on gender relations and social networks.  相似文献
