The Lamprey River Hydrological Observatory (LRHO) is a lowland coastal watershed in southeastern New Hampshire (USA). The LRHO offers a platform to investigate the effects of suburbanization and changing seasonality on watershed hydrology, biogeochemistry, and nutrient export to an estuarine ecosystem. The LRHO utilizes a nested-watershed design to examine headwater stream and main-stem river dynamics distributed across a mixed land-use environment. Data sets from the LRHO now comprise over 20 years of weekly grab sample data as well as 7 years of high-frequency sensor data. Collectively these data sets include measures of discharge, dissolved organic matter, nutrients, cations and anions, greenhouse gases, and other physio-chemical properties. Here we share information on the setting and motivating questions of the LRHO and data availability.  相似文献

Direct dating of fossil coral reefs using the U-series chronometer provides an important independent test of the Milankovitch orbital forcing theory of climate change. However, well-dated fossil corals pre-dating the last interglacial period (>130 thousand years ago; ka) are scarce due to, (1) a lack of sampling localities, (2) insufficient analytical precision in U-series dating methods, and (3) diagenesis which acts to violate the assumption of closed-system U-series isotopic decay in fossil corals. Here we present 50 new high-precision U-series age determinations for fossil corals from Henderson Island, an emergent coral atoll in the central South Pacific. U-series age determinations associated with the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9 interglacial and MIS 7.5 interstadial periods are reported. The fossil corals show relatively little open-system U-series behaviour in comparison to other localities with fossil coral reefs formed prior to the last glacial cycle, however, open-system U-series behaviour is still evident in most of the dated corals. In particular, percent-level shifts in the [230Th/238U]act composition are observed, leading to conventional U-series ages that are significantly younger or older than the true sample age. This open-system U-series behaviour is not accounted for by any of the open-system U-series models, indicating that new models should be derived. The new U-series ages reported here support and extend earlier findings reported in Stirling et al. (2001), providing evidence of prolific coral reef development on Henderson Island at ∼320 ka, most likely correlated with MIS 9.3, and subsequent reef development at ∼307 ka during MIS 9.1, while relative sea-level was potentially ∼20 m lower than during MIS 9.3. The U-series ages for additional well-preserved fossil corals are suggestive of minor reef development on Henderson Island during MIS 7.5 (245-230 ka) at 240.3 ± 0.8 and 234.7 ± 1.3 ka. All U-series observations are consistent with the Milankovitch theory of climate change, in terms of the timing of onset and termination of the dated interglacial and interstadial periods. The best preserved samples also suggest that the oceanic 234U/238U during MIS 9 and MIS 7.5 was within five permil of the modern open ocean composition.  相似文献

We report on the detection of an ∼5900 s quasi-periodic variation in the extensive photometry of TX Col spanning 12 yr. We discuss five different models to explain this period. We favour a mechanism where the quasi-periodic variation results from the beating of the Keplerian frequency of the 'blobs' orbiting in the outer accretion disc with the spin frequency and from modulated accretion of these 'blobs' taking place in a shocked region near the disc/magnetosphere boundary.  相似文献

A set of Mercury sodium emission data collected over a range of true anomaly angles during 1997-2003 was used to analyze the effect of solar radiation acceleration on sodium emissions. The variation of emission intensity with changing Doppler velocities throughout the orbit was minimized by normalizing the intensities to a constant true anomaly angle. The normalized intensities should be independent of orbital position if sodium density is constant. Plots of the normalized intensities against solar radiation acceleration showed very considerable scatter. However, the scatter was not random, but the result of a systematic variation, such that the normalized emission at a particular value of radiation acceleration took one or the other of two values, depending on the value of the true anomaly angle. We propose that this was the result of solar radiation acceleration changing the velocity of the sodium atoms, and consequently changing the solar continuum seen by the atoms. There is a positive feedback loop in the “out” leg of the orbit, such that radiation acceleration increases the solar continuum intensity seen by the atoms, and a negative feedback loop in the “in” leg of the orbit, such radiation acceleration decreases the continuum intensity. The observations could be approximately fit by assuming that sodium atoms are exposed to sunlight for an average of 1700 s. The emission values corrected for this effect showed much less scatter, with a general trend of about 30% to lower values from minimum to maximum radiation acceleration. The corrected emissions were used to calculate average column densities, and the result compared with the predictions of Smyth and Marconi [Smyth, W.H., Marconi, M.L., 1995. Astrophys. J. 441, 839-864] for the variation of column density with true anomaly angle. The comparison suggests that sodium atoms interact weakly with the surface. The effect of radiation acceleration on emission intensities should be taken into account if column densities are to be calculated from emission intensities.  相似文献

The optimal detection of signals requires detailed knowledge of the noise statistics. In many applications, the assumption of Gaussian noise allows the use of the linear correlator (LC), which is known to be optimal in these circumstances. However, the performance of the LC is poor in warm shallow waters where snapping shrimp noise dominates in the range 2-300 kHz. Since snapping shrimp noise consists of a large number of individual transients, its statistics are highly non-Gaussian. We show that the noise statistics can be described accurately by the symmetric alpha-stable family of probability distributions. Maximum-likelihood (ML) and locally optimal detectors based on the detailed knowledge of the noise probability distribution are shown to demonstrate enhanced performance. We also establish that the sign correlator, which is a nonparametric detector, performs better than the LC in snapping shrimp noise. Although the performance of the sign correlator is slightly inferior to that of the ML detector, it is very simple to implement and does not require detailed knowledge of the noise statistics. This makes it an attractive compromise between the simple LC and the complex ML detector  相似文献
