We observed the Mercury sodium exosphere during the period 1997-2003, collecting images of planetary sodium emission covering the full range of true anomaly angles with only a few small gaps. The distribution of sodium emission over the surface was generally non-uniform and changeable. When the dawn terminator was in view, the terminator was generally brighter than the limb, as expected for evaporation of condensed sodium at the dawn terminator. Also, the excess emission reached its largest values when radiation acceleration reached one or the other of its two maxima, as expected for the effect of radiation acceleration on sodium distribution. When the dusk terminator was in view, the limb was generally brighter than the terminator. The difference was larger than would be expected for a uniform sodium exosphere, suggesting that there is a deficit of sodium near the dusk terminator. There was no apparent effect of radiation acceleration on the ratio, which might be the result of a very large deficit of sodium near the dusk terminator. For the northern and southern hemispheres, excess sodium was observed about a third of the time in one or the other hemisphere, appearing at random intervals of true anomaly and longitude. The random nature of these occurrences suggests an external cause, one not correlated with any characteristic of the planetary orbit or planetary geochemistry. We suggest that the northern or southern excess sodium events are the result of solar weather, whereby solar particles are precipitated to the surface at high latitudes, and produce localized sources of sodium. IMF configurations for which solar particles can precipitate to high latitudes on the surface occur about 30% of the time, in general agreement with the observed frequency of north or south excess emission. Near periods of maximum radiation acceleration, some images displayed two peaks of sodium emission, one peak at high northern latitudes, the other at high southern latitudes. One possible cause could be the accumulation of sodium near the terminator, pushed there by radiation acceleration.  相似文献

The concept of the nanoflare, used in interpreting the solar X-ray corona, is extended to RS CVn stars which, unlike the Sun, exhibit non-thermal quiescent radio spectra. The theoretical synchrotron-radiation radio spectrum emitted by a regular series of nanoflare-electron pulses, injected into the coronal magnetic field, is derived: for an electron energy spectrum N ( γ )∝ γ − s , the spectral power density is given by P ( ν )∝ ν − s /2. This result is valid for the observation of a series of nanoflares with total time duration ≳ the characteristic electron radiation lifetime, which is the case for electrons trapped in extensive coronal regions such as exist in RS CVn stars on the magnetic-dipole magnetospheric model. The tenuous coronal plasma allows the electrons to give a radio spectrum unaffected at high frequencies (≳5 GHz) by electron collision loss, while the emission of bremsstrahlung X-rays by the electrons also occurs with a spectrum that is related to their radio emission. The observation of individual X-ray bursts, which would provide direct evidence for microflares, is not, however, attainable with current instrumentation.  相似文献

The Stokes imaging technique of Potter, Hakala & Cropper is applied to the polarized emission from the AM Her system ST LMi. For the first time, the cyclotron emission region on the surface of the white dwarf is mapped in terms of optical depth/density in an analytical and objective manner. The region is found to consist of a less dense region leading a higher density region in orbital phase. It is demonstrated that the emission region needs to have a multi-temperature structure in order to explain the spectral slope and the general morphology of the cyclotron humps observed in the IR during the bright phase in ST LMi.
Furthermore, it is shown that a secondary emission region, fed by the same magnetic field lines that feed the main emission region, could be responsible for the positive circular polarization in the IR, the position angle variation and the excess flux during the faint phase of the white light observations which cannot be accounted for with a single emission region.  相似文献

We present polarimetric and spectroscopic observations of the ROSAT source RX J1141.3−6410, recently identified as a polar. The detection of circular polarization variations, with an amplitude of 10 per cent, over a 3.16-h period confirms that the system is a polar (AM Herculis star). Supporting evidence comes from the nature of the emission lines and their radial velocity variability. In addition, we observe continuum slope changes in the far-red spectral region (∼6000–8200 Å), indicative of phase dependent cyclotron emission. Polarimetric modelling at two wavelengths establishes RX J1141.3−6410 as a single-pole system, with i ∼ β ∼70°. The accretion region is extended in magnetic longitude, and is totally self-occulted for ∼25 per cent of the orbit. The radial velocity curves derived from the emission lines show a phasing with maximum blueshift occurring with Δ φ ∼0.05 of maximum intensity and circular polarisation. In addition, the broader component of the lines exhibit a substantial radial velocity phase shift with respect to the narrower component, in the sense that the broad component preceeds the narrow. This can be readily understood if the narrower component is principally a result of orbital motion of the stream material and the broad component mainly a result of streaming motion near the coupling region. The phasing of the Ca  ii near-infrared line radial velocities also supports this general picture.  相似文献

Cross-sections of the sodium emission tail of Mercury were measured at various distances down the tail when Mercury was moving away from the Sun (true anomaly angles <180°), and again when Mercury was moving towards the Sun (true anomaly angles >180°). As predicted in early modeling studies, significant differences were expected between these two cases, as the result of Doppler shifts to higher solar intensity in the former case, and to lower solar intensity for the latter case. For observations with Mercury moving away from the Sun, the sodium tail was observed out to about 40,000 kilometers (16 Mercury radii, RM) downstream, expanding, on average, at a rate of 1.9±0.3 km/s. The source rates for sodium generation from Mercury into the tail were found to be in the range 2-5×1023 atoms/s, corresponding to between 1 and 10% of the estimated total sodium production rate on the planet. The limiting value of radiation acceleration required to produce an observable sodium tail was estimated to be 112±24 cm/s2. For observations where Mercury was moving towards the Sun, the emission intensity in the sodium tail decreased very rapidly with distance downstream, disappearing entirely beyond 12,000 (6 RM) kilometers for radiation accelerations of 128.7 and 135.4 cm/s2. For smaller radiation accelerations, the sodium tail was not detectable at all, yielding a limiting value for tail generation of about 122±2 cm/s2. Interpretation of the limiting radiation acceleration values suggests that the process that generates the sodium tail yields atoms with energies greater than 3 eV. Particle sputtering is the most reasonable source process.  相似文献

A direct aqueous injection capillary gas chromatography/flame ionization (GC/FID) procedure for the analysis of petroleum-contaminated water was developed and applied to seven water samples saturated with different petroleum products. Separation of C1 to C4 alcohols, C6 to C9 monoaromatics, MTBE, phenol, aniline, and other compounds, and the detection of BTEX compounds at concentrations at or below their maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) is reported. Among the test compounds analyzed, the only pair found to coelute were 1-butanol and benzene. A method for confirmation of alcohols and polar compounds in the presence of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons was also evaluated. In this case, water samples were analyzed before and after purging. Polar compounds were found to be significant components of the water soluble fractions of commercial petroleum products.  相似文献

The fate of the impactor is an important aspect of the impact‐cratering process. Defining impactor material as surviving if it remains solid (i.e., does not melt or vaporize) during crater formation, previous numerical modeling and experiments have shown that survivability decreases with increasing impact velocity, impact angle (with respect to the horizontal), and target density. Here, we show that in addition to these, impactor survivability depends on the porosity and shape of the impactor. Increasing impactor porosity decreases impactor survivability, while prolate‐shaped (polar axis > equatorial axis) impactors survive impact more so than spherical and oblate‐shaped (polar axis < equatorial axis) impactors. These results are used to produce a relatively simple equation, which can be used to estimate the impactor fraction shocked to a given pressure as a function of these parameters. By applying our findings to the Morokweng crater‐forming impact, we suggest impact scenarios that explain the high meteoritic content and presence of unmolten fossil meteorites within the Morokweng crater. In addition to previous suggestions of a low‐velocity and/or high‐angled impact, this work suggests that an elongated and/or low porosity impactor may also help explain the anomalously high survivability of the Morokweng impactor.  相似文献

An artificial channel was opened in 1994 between the microtidal Peel–Harvey Estuary and the Indian Ocean to increase tidal exchange and thus ameliorate the problems of eutrophication. Although this greatly reduced macroalgal and cyanobacterial growths and the amount of particulate organic matter, our data indicate that, contrary to managerial expectations, the benthic environment has deteriorated. Thus, although macroinvertebrate density has declined as predicted, taxonomic distinctness (Δ*) has also declined and species composition has become more variable. Macroinvertebrate composition has also changed markedly at the species, family and even phylum levels. The Crustacea, the most sensitive of the major macrobenthic taxa to environmental stress, has become proportionally less abundant and speciose, whereas the Polychaeta, the least sensitive, was unique in showing the reverse trend. The benthos of the Peel–Harvey Estuary is thus apparently more stressed than previously, probably due to the multiple effects of a great increase in system use.  相似文献
