We have observed the bipolar outflow source NGC 1333 (HH 7–11) in theJ=2–1 transition of12CO, and find evidence for a strong westerly termination of the red outflow lobe at a velocityV

27 km s–1, together with maximal mean red-flow velocities v centred upon both the driving source SVS 13 and the westerly limit of the outflow zone. We review observations of bubble size distributions (BSDs) generated during explosive volcanic eruptions and laboratory explosions, as inferred from vesicle size distributions found in the end products. Unimodal, polymodal, exponential and power law BSDs are common, even in the absence of coalescence, and both power law and exponential distributions have been generated in the same eruption. To date theoretical models have proposed incompatible mechanisms for producing the various distributions. We here present a unifying mechanism. Data from our laboratory analogue experiments suggest that power law distributions are associated with highly non-equilibrium degassing. A numerical model is developed in which bubbles nucleate repeatedly and grow in the spaces between those of previous generations, where, in a non-equilibrium degassing scenario, the volatile concentration remains high. This process causes the BSD to evolve from unimodal, through exponential, into a power law. The exponent of the power law is a measure of the number of nucleation events, or the duration of the nucleation period compared with the timescale of bubble growth. The mathematical inevitability of the evolution from unimodal (Poissonian) to power law is discussed. The findings may resolve the apparent contradiction between the equilibrium degassing conduit flow models and the non-equilibrium degassing conditions derived from bubble growth models of explosive volcanic eruptions. The process of ongoing nucleation is the mechanism whereby the volcanic system maintains near-equilibrium in the case of rapid depressurisation and slow volatile diffusion. 相似文献

Activation volumes for exchange of oxygen between bulk aqueous solution and sites in the GaO4Al12(OH)24(H2O)127+(aq) (GaAl12) complex were measured by variable-pressure 17O NMR techniques. Near 322 K, rates of exchange for the less labile set of bridging hydroxyls in the GaAl12 decrease by a factor of about two with increasing pressure from 0.1 to 350 MPa. These data indicate a substantially positive activation volume of ΔV‡ = +7 ± 1 cm3/mol, which is the first activation volume measured for a bridging hydroxyl in a polynuclear complex. This result suggests significant bond-lengthening in the activation step. Electrostriction effects should be small because exchange occurs via a pH-independent path under the experimental conditions. The second, more labile set of bridging hydroxyls exchange too rapidly for the variable-pressure techniques employed here. The exchange of bound-water molecules on the GaAl12 was observed at P = 350 MPa using the 17O-NMR line-broadening technique. Comparison with previous measurements at 0.1 MPa indicates decreasing line width from 0.1 to 350 MPa for temperatures at which exchange dominates, yielding an activation volume of ΔV‡ = +3(± 1) cm3/mol. This activation volume is smaller than the value for the Al(H2O)63+ complex, suggesting that water exchange on the larger GaAl12 complex has less dissociative character although the average charge density is lower. 相似文献

This paper describes an intercomparison between the Väisälä, VIZ and Swiss (used at upper-air station 06610) radiosondes. The field experiment was supported by a series of carefully implemented laboratory tests. The results show that the temperature sensor data from the SMI and VIZ sondes both require additional radiation compensation for daylight ascents whilst the Swiss sonde's pressure sensor has particularly large errors in the 200–100 mb region. New correction parameters have been determined for the SMI and VIZ sondes and these have now been built into the systems' software. 相似文献

Uranium mill tailings were anaerobically incubated in the presence of H2 with Alteromonas putrefaciens, a bacterium known to couple the oxidation of H2 and organic compounds to the reduction of Fe(III) oxides. There was a direct correlation between the extent of Fe(III) reduction and the accumulation of dissolved226Ra. In sterile tailings in which Fe(III) was not reduced, there was negligible leaching of226Ra. The behavior of Ba was similar to that of Ra in inoculated and sterile systems. These results demonstrate that under anaerobic conditions, microbial reduction of Fe(III) may result in the release of dissolved226Ra from uranium mill tailings. 相似文献

Abstract. Statistical analysis of monitoring data is becoming a necessary part of many ground- and surface-water quality management activities. To meet this need a statistical software package for microcomputers called WQStat II has been designed and produced specifically for water quality applications. The software provides tools for data management, summarizing data characteristics, analyzing trends, comparing medians of two or more groups of data, and evaluating excursions or standards violations. To minimize problems associated with nonnormal data and nondetects, WQStat relies primarily on graphical and nonparametric approaches. 相似文献

Various paleosols have been reported from within the Witwatersrand and Ventersdorp Supergroups, South Africa. They were studied in an attempt to constrain the amount of oxygen available in the atmosphere during deposition of the gold- and uranium-bearing Witwatersrand conglomerates. The majority of these horizons do not have any physical characteristics of paleosols, and none of them have a chemistry consistent with weathering, suggesting they have been subjected to modification by later alteration processes. A similar chemistry, indicating overprinting of any original soil chemistry, has been reported from paleosols elsewhere (Elliot Lake region, Canada; Hekpoort basalt, South Africa), but it does not appear that significant cognizance has been taken of this fact when using these paleosols to determine the composition of the Precambrian atmosphere. It is concluded here that characteristics previously attributed to Precambrian weathering in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere are better explained by post-burial, hydrothermal alteration along lithological contacts. 相似文献

A study is made of X-ray line emission observed during the developing stages of a set of post-flare loop prominences. The time behaviour of the line emission can be described by a model consisting of two flux tubes containing plasma heated impulsively at the flash phase; the plasma cools by radiation and by conduction to the chromosphere. These ideas are extended to the possible formation of H prominences from low-lying hot loops. 相似文献
